There were many constants throughout our Kicks On Court this year such as the onslaught of Air Jordan 12 PEs, Nike Zoom Kobe V iDs and our daily dosage of team sneakers; however, every now and then a big sneaker storyline, from left field, shocked the sneaker community and made us pay attention just a little more.

With that said, what your favorite sneaker storyline of the year? Some of the biggest surprises of the year include Kevin Durant and the Thunder unveiling the “Creamsicle” Nike KD IIs, Rasheed Wallace shelving the Nike Air Force 1 for the Nike Zoom Sharkalaid, and a Nike Trainer 1 sighting on the NBA courts!

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, multiple Nike brand players around the NBA laced up a special MLK commemoration in honor of the civil rights activist. Although the sneakers caught the eye of many in a positive way, we noticed that the color scheme mirrored that seen on the Pan-African flag. Pan-Africanism centers around a belief which seeks to unite native African heritage into a worldwide society. However, Martin Luther King Jr. believed in not only uniting the African heritage, but unifying the entire world no matter what race. Nonetheless, these grey foil-like based sneakers were a hot topic within Kicks On Court.

In the late stages of 2009, many sneaker enthusiasts were focused on trying to get their hands on major Jordan holiday releases, new Nike Air Max LeBron VII colorways and/or the Nike Zoom Kobe V. However, there was another signature sneaker that soaked up some attention in late December. Kevin Durant and his Thunder teammates surprisingly laced up the “Creamsicle” Nike KD II in game against the Dallas Mavericks. This happening undoubtedly brought attention to Durant’s second signature shoe and it ultimately became one of the colorways seen on the Nike KD II.

Kicks On Court: Sheed Shelves Air Force 1 for First Time in Years

If we close our eyes and watch Rasheed Wallace play basketball, we can always count on two things: him obtaining a technical foul and him gracing the courts with the Nike Air Force 1. However, the latter changed as he shelved the Nike Air Force 1 for the first time in years for the Nike Zoom Sharkalaid. We understand that everything doesn’t stay the same, but next time you decide to keep the Nike Air Force 1 in the locker, please wear something that’s worth it!

As stated earlier, we always tend to witness a few sneaker surprises throughout the NBA season; yet, this particular Kicks On Court installment shocked us the most. Sure, Sheed surprised us by not going with the Nike Air Force 1, but did you ever think you’d see a Nike Trainer 1 on the court. Maybe Devin Brown is making a new trend for basketball players. Or maybe he forgot his basketball sneakers at home. Either way, don’t try this at home.

Towards the end of the 2009-2010 NBA season, Nike put together a great interactive marketing campaign in which a lucky fan wins the opportunity to create a Nike Zoom Kobe V iD that will be worn by the Lakers in a game. Kid Hollywood, the contest winner, also got the chance to attend the very game Kobe and the Lakers unveiled his creation. It has to be cool seeing an entire team (for the most part) wearing a colorway you constructed, right?

Although Breast Cancer Awareness was set aside for October, that didn’t stop LeBron and the Cavs from recognizing it later in the season. At the beginning of December 2009, the Cleveland Cavaliers sported pink sneakers along with various pink accesories to show support for ?Box Out Breast Cancer?, a program designed to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Much like Kid Hollywood and the Nike Zoom Kobe V iD, 17-year-old Austin Jermacans got the chance to see a professional basketball player wear his creation; however, this is a much bigger scale. Jermacans designed an alternate version of the Jordan Melo M6 in last year’s Jordan Future Sole contest. Carmelo Anthony liked it so much that he laced multiple colorways of the “Future Sole” Jordan Melo M6 throughout the second half of the season and on into the playoffs. Jermacans also got the chance to see his creation release to the public at the end of May. All this for a 17-year-old kid? We must applaud him!

LeBron James enamored us with colorway after colorway of the Nike Air Max LeBron VII; yet, the majority of you were shocked to see him sport mismatched LeBron VIIs with his Hardwood Classic jerseys in mid-January. It’s a shame that some of the best Air Max LeBron VII colorways will never release, and these two were definitely liked by many.
