Back in 2020, Allbirds and adidas announced an unlikely joining of forces to create a performance runner. Finally, the two juggernauts have unveiled their long-awaited concept: a highly sustainable performance running silhouette. With the ideas of sustainability and environmental consciousness in mind, the new runner, dubbed the FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT, are the brands’ first shoe with <3KG carbon footprint.

The FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is adidas’ latest venture towards eco-innovation, having already prioritized their recyclable Primeblue material and decreasing production waste. With the help of Allbirds, the FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT was born using 63% less carbon emissions.

From a construction perspective, a combination of newly developed technologies and both brand’s signature technologies have come together nicely. The newly crafted beige upper features 70% polyester and 30% natural Tencel. Underfoot, a combination of adidas’ Lightstrike midsole fused with Allbird’s sugar-cane based Sweetfoam offer a low-carbon neutral component.

“Our partnership with Allbirds is a beacon of what can happen when competing brands from the same industry see the possibilities in coming together to design. By truly co-creating and providing each other with open access to knowledge and resources – such as Allbirds’ knowledge of carbon calculation and experience with natural materials, and adidas’ capabilities in manufacturing and performance footwear – this is a call-to-action for other brands, and a milestone in the sports industry achieving carbon neutrality,”
Brian Grevy, Executive Board Member Global Brands at adidas.

“We believe that the challenge of solving climate change is the problem of our generation and solving it will not be done alone. We need to find new business models, new innovations and new ways of working together. Our partnership with adidas is an example of that. Over the past year, our two teams have raced as one to create a shoe as close to zero carbon emissions as we could possibly achieve. The results are an exciting step forward, and hopefully, an example for others to follow.”
Tim Brown, co-founder & co-CEO at Allbirds

The now highly anticipated Allbirds x adidas FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT saw an initial launch in May with 100 pairs raffled to adidas Creator Club members, with an anticipated wider December 15 release for $120. Another release is set to occur sometime during SS22.
