Yesterday, Ken Griffey Jr. officially announced his retirement after 22 seasons of baseball. Whether or not you followed America’s Game closely over the past two decades, it was hard not to be captivated by the one they called Junior. The once brash youngster made a name for himself with his dazzling outfield plays and his seamless swing. His 22 years of play also saw one of the best signature lines of any Nike athlete. We take a look back at some of the Nike cleats and trainers that helped make the Kid a household name during his playing days and immortal among sneaker heads.

Nike Diamond Fury ’94

Before Junior got his own signature line, he endorsed the ’94 version of the Nike Diamond Fury. The cleats and trainer featured a loud black and teal upper with “JR” on the tongue and a metallic 24 embroidered on the collar. Think the baseball version of the Nike Air Up.

Nike Air Griffey Max 1

The Griffey Max 1 was a classic trainer whose cleated counterpart held up on the diamond. It is literally the shoe that started it all for Griffey. The Griffey Max 1 marked new territory as it was the first time a baseball player had his name on the shoe. This past summer, the original Griffey caught a second life as it was retroed to the delight of many sneaker enthusiasts.? From the “Fresh Waters” to the “Volt” colorway, each one was nothing less than a hit!

Backwards cap and all, Griffey had a landmark season in ’97 as he hit 56 home runs and took home the AL MVP Award. The Kid’s first MVP season saw the launch of his second signature the Nike Griffey Max 2. Emerald hints and Air Max cushioning were carried over from the original, but the strap was ditched in favor of carbon fiber detail.

Nike Air Griffey Max 3

The Kid proved he still had it, cranking out 19 homers to edge out Jim Thome in the 1998 Home Run Derby. A leather upper complimented by Air Max cushioning and a metallic swooshed leather cross strap made these one of the meanest Griffey designs yet. No retro plans have been made public but one can only hope.
