Such is the case with the original Nike “Moon Shoe”<\/strong> – a running model handmade by Bill Bowerman. <\/p>\n

Crafted on the famous waffle iron, the \u201cMoon Shoe\u201d nickname actually derived from the footprint a waffle sole left in the dirt in comparison to that of the astronauts in the moon way back in 1969.<\/p>\n

Hand-cobbled by Nike employee Geoff Hollister way before he could claim LinkedIn clout, the white nylon sneakers were made for runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials to the tune of only 12 pairs. This particular pair is said to be the only unworn, deadstock “Moon Shoe” in existence.<\/p>\n

With a starting bid of $80,000, this ultra-rare relic went up for auction at Sotheby’s x Stadium Goods’ Ultimate Sneaker Collection Online. Today, Sole Collector<\/a> reports that it sold for a whopping $437,500!<\/p>\n

Keep in mind this one pair going for $437,500 is wild in that all other 99 pairs from the lot sold for a total of $850,000<\/a>!<\/p>\n
