As we all know, Black Friday always produces a limitless amount of shoppers year in and year out. However, it has also become a specified release date for some of the best sneakers of the year. With that said, there will be a couple of must-have sneakers this upcoming Black Friday (November 27th, 2009) including the third and final installment of the High Snobiety x Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel Lyte Trilogy.<\/p>\n

Following the Culture Shoq x Asics Gel Lyte III (July ’09) and the Snkrs Day x Asics Gel Lyte III (October ’09), Ronnie and David?Fischer?will unleash its collaboration with High Snobiety on the same sneaker this Black Friday. Our Snkrs Day staff got the chance to sit down with both Ronnie and David to talk about the trilogy. Snkrs Day: Collabs are nothing new for David Z or for Asics. What makes the Trilogy Project different from the other collabs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ronnie Fieg: The Trilogy Project brings the third element to the table, my favorite blogs. When people see the the blogs attached to the project, I don’t believe they see what the real intentions were. I wanted to connect with not only the blogs, but the people behind them which influence me. Working with Greg from Cultureshoq, Matt from nicekicks and David from highsnobiety has been an amazing experience. I’m usually working on projects alone so adding another talented person to the project makes it that much better for the shoe.<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day: What was your initial reaction when you were asked to take part in this series of collaborations?<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Fischer: I was definitely excited to be part of the project. We write all year long about sneakers and sometimes it’s just great to be creating something non-virtual. There is nothing like creating a product that you can then hold in your hand. I have known Ronnie for a while, so it was just a nice project to be working on together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snkrs Day: The first collab of the Gel Lyte III was with David Z back in early 2007. Two and a half years later, do you think the shoe has as much more or less traction than when it was worked on?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ronnie Fieg: The Gel Lyte III has seen its fair shares of collaborations around the globe and has achieved major success when released with the right retailers. I don’t feel that the shoe is necessarily a main stream sneaker and ready for chain stores I still consider the shoe the best kept secret for the Asics Sportstyle brand.<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day: There have been a healthy number of Asics Gel Lyte III’s to release in the past 2 years. What did you do to make the shoe stand out from the rest?<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Fischer: In our case, the approach is always a little different. Of course we do not want to make something that everybody has seen already a 100 times, but standing out of the crowd at all cost is not really our style. Also, if you look at previous product collaborations that we were apart of, you can see that we usually stick to the subtle and classic colors and styles. For us being able to wear the product day in and day out is much more important than having the most flashy product out there. That said, we concentrated on choosing some nice premium materials that you do not get on most sneakers out there and stand out that way!<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day: In your opinion do you think there are still possibilities for new takes on the Gel Lyte III? Any other silhouettes by Asics that tempt you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ronnie Fieg: There are so many different approaches I have taken with this silhouette that it still surprises me today as to how different each samples comes out. With the library of materials Asics makes available to me, the possibilities to create and design a dope Gel Lyte III are endless. As far as other silhouettes are concerned, I have already worked on a GT Quick and i am in the middle of working a few other styles that I cannot mention so the answer is yes, I am tempted and sometimes it’s healthy to feed your temptations.<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day: Where does the release of a shoe you designed rank amongst other accomplishments with your website?<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Fischer: It is definitely great being for once on the other side of the table. We report about the more interesting sneaker releases around the globe every day of the year and it is just a great feeling being able to contribute with a product for once. Our concentration will always remain on the web, but doing something that people can touch, take home and wear out is definitely great and something we want to do on a regular.\n<\/p>\n

\nHigh Snobiety x Asics Gel Lyte III<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day:<\/strong> Materials seem to be an important thing about all of your work. Tell us about the materials chosen for the High Snobiety shoe. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ronnie Fieg: Materials are the most important element when it comes to my collaborations. I find it extremely important for people to feel that they’re getting their moneys worth with quality shoes, not logos. I try my hardest to separate my work from the rest with the premium materials I choose to work with since I refuse to create a logo for myself. For the Highsnobiety Gel, we decided to go with a premium patent leather and navy blue pig skin. The pig skin on this shoe is extremely rich with a very nice texture to it. Its the one part of the shoe which makes it really stand out. Using pig skin for the toe box has worked great with the Cultureshoq and Snkrs Day collabs, so I am expecting consumers to take notice and approach this project with the same outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snkrs Day: Was there anything in mind you wanted to accomplish with the design of this shoe (i.e. a specific look or source of inspiration)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Fischer: Not really. Like I mentioned before, for us the most important is that the shoe is easy to wear. Also we want to look at it in 2-5 years and still like the work that we did, so we stuck to subtle colors.<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day:<\/strong> The shoe releases on a big retail day, Black Friday, November 27th. Does this add more pressure to the release knowing that consumer’s dollars will be competed for by so many merchants of virtually every industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ronnie Fieg: Black Friday is an interesting day for footwear. People have their money ready to go down their list of Holiday presents but when it comes to limited releases nothing else matters to a true sneaker fan. Last year David Z did extremely well with the Adidas Black Tie release and i expect this year to be even better with Highsnobiety on board for this project.\n<\/p>\n

Snkrs Day: In the days of limited and special releases, do you think a shoe has to be a “sell out” to be considered a success?<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Fischer: Obviously we want the shoe to sell out, but we certainly do not care about resell values, etc. We know we produced a solid shoe with Ronnie and we just hope that the customers see that as well. If it now sells on the first day or in the first month does not really change anything for us. We just hope that people are into it and will wear it. It’s a sneaker for the street, not for the cupboard.<\/p>\n

Ronnie Fieg: Not at all, it is always an added bonus for the shoe to sell out quickly because it helps the resale value however that’s not what my projects are about. I am here to supply the consumer with a quality product and sometimes it takes time for the shoe to trickle down and become noticed by some of my frequent David Z. customers who are not on the blogs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
