Where it All Started

Michael Jordan was dominant at North Carolina. His skill set and leaping ability were unlike any other, and he was almost a lock as a top pick in the 1984 NBA Draft alongside Akeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie. Michael, of course, went third to the Chicago Bulls, a pivotal moment for everything that would follow.

His iconic Nike deal – brokered by Sonny Vaccaro – came into clearer view once MJ settled in Chicago. The Bulls colors – white, red and black – would be critical for his first signature shoe designed by former Nike great, Peter Moore. The “Banned” 1’s were first, the “Chicago” and “Black Toe” would come shortly after. All of which incorporated shades from the Bulls home and road uniforms. Michael would take this iconic image with the shoes tied by the laces tossed over his shoulder.

Michael Jordan with the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe”

Jumpman Jumpman Jumpman (MJ Was Up To Something)

Although Jordan didn’t wear the “Black Toes” much on-court during his rookie season, the shoe was a massive hit almost everywhere else. They were seen in tons of promotional ads and even Bulls team photos. But the image that stands out the most is likely the one that helped brand Air Jordan’s for the better and forever.

The famed photo in question sees MJ in his flight suit bottoms and “Black Toe” 1’s with the Chicago skyline to his back. This visual is largely credited as the image that inspired the Jumpman logo. The rest, as they say, is history.

Jumpman Logo

Black Toe? Check. Black Tongue???

When the “Black Toe” resurfaced back in 2013, the shoe was met with wide acceptance from a welcoming sneaker community. For many, it was the first time they’d seen the shoe on shelves or filling the digital space of online retailers. But even in carrying the OG moniker, they weren’t quite like MJ’s pairs from 1985.

Now, this may not matter to many, but Jordan’s original “Black Toe” 1’s came equipped with a black tongue. As mentioned above, the 2013 pair and this weekend’s pair come with a white tongue. Nonetheless, modern-day remastered Jordan 1’s are just that, masterful. Saturday’s release won’t be a let down in any shape or fashion. But it would be interesting one day for Jordan Brand to release the “Black Toe” with a matching black tongue.

Michael Jordan in the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe”

Michael Jordan with the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe”

Michael Jordan in the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe”

Rare On-Court Sightings

As mentioned earlier, MJ didn’t wear the “Black Toe” 1’s on court often. In fact, hardly ever. But there were a couple of instances when he did. And while many traditionally lace the up the shoe with black laces, the GOAT donned his pair in red. Will you hit the lace swap when they drop this Saturday for $160? Let us know and share your thoughts on where the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe” ranks among you all-time favorite Jordan 1’s.

Michael Jordan in the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe”

Michael Jordan in the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe”

This coming Saturday, the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe” will make its celebrated return to retailers.
