Self Enhancement Inc. organization to identify local teens that can benefit from the Product Creation Experience’s lessons and learnings.

Founded in 1981 by local native Tony Hopson Sr., SEI offers educational programs, life skills and help to at-risk families, reaching more than 8,000 children and adults in the Portland region annually. The organization operates at a grand 62,000 square foot facility in northeast Portland, providing students with resources and facilities like a performing arts auditorium, gymnasium, dance studio, library, computer lab and science lab.

Self Enhancement typically takes students into their program between the ages of 8 and 10, and hopes to provide educational and emotional support all the way through each child’s mid-twenties, in order to one day become, as Hopson terms it, a “PCC” — a positive contributing citizen. Of the students enrolled at SEI, 90% initially score as either “high risk” or “severe risk.” Nevertheless, an average of 98% of SEI participants graduate from high school, and 85% of those go on to pursue higher education, an incredible accomplishment for Hopson Sr’s organization.

The Nike Product Creation Experience is just one of many initiatives that SEI’s students take part in, and as one of the event’s judges, I was able to witness firsthand how well each team created a strategy, presented their plan and showcased their teamwork along the way. Each team was judged on its presentation delivery, consumer connection, product offering and brand management strategy, with the winning team awarded an educational group trip to the east coast. The judging panel featured Tony Hopson Sr., Nike Sportswear category footwear leader Charles Williams, Nike Training marketing director Sean Tresvant and other top Nike execs.

Read ahead for a detailed look at each team’s final product presentation, and congrats again to each student for completing the comprehensive NPCE program.

Keith Parker, NPCE Program Director

Continue reading to Page 2 for a look at Team Born Free’s presentation…

TEAM “BORN FREE”

For Team Born Free, the group of students looked to Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa, for inspiration. As they began to create a running themed collection, the team identified youthful male and female consumers that were not only style savvy, but also active runners during a morning sunrise, just before school or work.

The “Born Free” name not only captures the spirit of the local kids, but also the reality that these are children born into a post-apartheid era, part of a new generation in modern South Africa. The team’s “Born Free” logo features a bold B, with the ‘F’ visible through negative space. As you’ll see below, both the men’s and women’s footwear and apparel feature vivid gradient fades along the upper of a Nike Presto and Nike Free, and throughout the adjoining tank tops and running jackets.

In addition to the collection, the group of students designed a track-inspired store layout, showcasing the “Born Free” products alongside its motivational mantra about inclusion and hope. To round the project out, the team concepted a series of “Born Free” 5K runs to take place in six global regions around the world, helping to highlight togetherness at once, all inspired by Johannesburg. Check out the team’s presentation and work below.

TEAM “CREATE YOUR SHOT”

After several teammates were unable to complete the program and withdrew, that didn’t stop Trevaun, Samantha and Cay’man from pushing through, and leading their team by each wearing multiple hats down the stretch to the final stages.

Together, the three students formed Team “Create Your Shot,” a theme built around the sport-obsessed and basketball-frenzied young teens in Manila. The team name also served to represent the aspirations of players and students in the Philippines, with the idea that they can create their own shot in life through work and effort. The logo melds together a basketball backboard with elements from the country’s flag.

With a budget-conscious consumer in mind, Create Your Shot’s product collection features lightweight mesh tank tops, reversible shorts, slides and a backpack, equipping a basketball playing student with an all-purpose outfit in the sweltering heat that Manila is known for. The women’s collection is aimed at a post-High School hoops-centric consumer that still likes to wear a basketball-driven look, with CYS-themed Air Force 1 Lows and Sportswear apparel. Both collections are accented by the country’s prideful colors of blue, yellow and red.

Events to help amplify Team Create Your Shot’s storytelling included a Facebook-driven basketball tournament activation for local players, tying in skills training, musical performances and art exhibits. Take a look at the team’s impressive efforts below, highlighting Manila’s 24/7 passion for basketball.

TEAM “MAGNIFY YOUR GOAL”

Collectively clad in black and white business casual attire, Team Magnify Your Goal made an impression from the second they took the NPCE stage. The team of eight showcased an impressive cadence and flow throughout, seamlessly moving from member to member in a polished and strong presentation that earned them winning honors of the 8th annual competition.

With inspiration for their group project stemming from Berlin, Germany, the students looked to the local love of soccer and keyed in on style-focused consumers looking to set trends. The “Magnify Your Goal” logo drafts off of classic soccer club badges from the region, and its white, black, gold and red hues helped to influence the overall product collection.

The apparel for both men and women is made up of full Nike Tech Fleece tops and pants, with crest-affixed t-shirts to be worn underneath. For women, a boldly gold Nike Sportswear Athena sneaker conveys confidence in reaching your goals, while the men’s Internationalist is seen balancing black and white with red underlays, a nod to overcoming racial divide.

In addition to the detailed collections, Team Magnify Your Goal outlined an impressive marketing plan that featured app integrations across several of Nike’s own platforms, like SNKRS. They also presented a concept for custom Snapchat geo-filters, and mapped out several activations both in store and throughout Berlin to draw in soccer fans. The Magnify Your Goal storefront featured a sharp layout and interactive soccer goal room, but was highlighted by a translucent wall at the center of the showroom, signifying the modern unity between east and west Berlin after the demolition of the city’s Berlin Wall.

Check out the full presentation and product collection below, and congrats again to each of the Team Magnify Your Goal students on their group win, and all of the students that participated in this year’s Nike Product Creation Experience program.
