Looking ahead to an extremely bright and innovative future, Nike today announced a partnership with HP that will enable their ability to produce 3D printed footwear.

For now, this move looks to initially circle samples and prototypes, not mass-produced general releases. Clearly, though, that is a goal moving forward. And considering this partnership with HP is now in place, the future of footwear may not be as far off as you think.

“The move builds off of over three years of innovation in the 3D printing and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) space that has allowed Nike to make and tweak prototypes in hours, instead of months,” stated in a press release from the brand. “This process has fast-tracked the creation of everything from the [Nike Zoom Superfly Flyknit] track spike to football cleats, such as the Nike Vapor Laser Talon and Nike Vapor HyperAgility.”

Nike will begin using the budding HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solution – the first 3D printer with capabilities geared towards large-scale production. Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
