Chinese New Year sneaker releases date all the way back to all-time great Air Force 1s like the “Year of the Horse” and “Year of the Dog” takes. While said styles still shine, the last six years have been super strong on the Zodiac sneaker scene. Highlighting 2011 through 2016, see some of our favorite CNY sneaker release.

Retros get all the love, but we’ll say it right here: the Air Jordan 2011 “Year of the Rabbit” is WAY better than the Air Jordan 7 of the same theme. Quality and detailing were on-point on this slept on silo in by far its best colorway.

Air Force 1s are always awesome but some seasons are just stronger for the silo. The “Year of the Rabbit” release saw premium or rather supreme execution on the low top cut, providing the first chase-worthy AF1 drop in quite some while. Yes, other good AF1s dropped nearby, but none better than these.

The Kobe System ad campaign was one of the most memorable from the Mamba, but one could argue that the seventh silo didn’t see as many hits as previous pairs. Well, when it comes to the “Year of the Dragon” colorway you’re still welcome as the palette and packaging were on-point.

The Zoom KD IV was (and still is) THAT shoe in the KD line. Amazing design, incredible price point, the KD IV couldn’t miss and put Kevin Durant’s shoe series on the map. Not only was the “Year of the Dragon” motif a winner at retail and on iD, it was a GR that just about all could get their hands on.

photo via Kenlu

No snakeskin? No problem. The Jordan CP3.VII “Year of the Snake” avoided the obvious for an awesome iteration of CP3’s seventh signature shoe. On the low, Zodiac signatures for CP3 and Melo have been strong just about each and every time.

Though an official “Year of the Snake” Question dropped in GS sizes to celebrate the Zodiac sign, this timely BAIT collab takes the cake for us. On the Reebok tip, there were also some great atmos collabos of Zodiac inspiration utilizing the Insta Pump Fury silo.

2015 may have been the Year of the Superstar, but the “Year of the Snake” take on the 80s silo was arguably the strongest of this decade. Adding energy to the silo before it had an all-out push, the Shelltoe proved a style icon when dressed in snakeskin.

The PUMA Suede “Year of the Horse” proved best in show on an awesome pack. Simple, clean and to the point, this premium pair was a strong spark to the Suede’s comeback campaign in 2014.

photo via Capsule

Funky and furry, the Nike Footscape Woven Chukka “Year of the Horse” made the most of patent leather and pony hair for a loud take on an already wild silo. These still turn heads today.

The Reebok Insta Pump Fury got plenty of burn in 2015. While collabos would yield the best colorways in general, this zodiac release was subtle but strong.

The Air Jordan XX9 was a performance juggernaut, but it was also pretty ill aesthetically. The Flyweave upper presented a canvas with the utmost graphic potential, realized best by the “Photo Reel” release and this “Year of the Goat” take. It also reminds us that MJ is still the GOAT every year.

Steve Caballero is a boss and his signature shoe is still strong enough to garner wears from Kanye. While tough takes are what the full and Half Cab are best known for, this playful “Year of the Monkey” drop is also on point.

While inline options on the AJ and AF1 line were solid in 2016, it’s the custom takes that we really wish we could take home. The Remade x 400ml Clothing Air Jordan 11 “Chinese New Year” Custom and Zhijun Wang’s “Year of the Monkey” Air Force 1 Low are both imaginative and premium, offering two awesome sneaker celebrations of the CNY holiday.

Air Jordan 2011 “Year of the Rabbit” // 2011
