Still young, wild and free, Wiz Khalifa is a decade deep in the game. Over the last ten plus years, the Pittsburgh product has put the Steel City on the map and achieved star status, winning over a core fan base with ever-evolving mixtape content while sweeping Billboard with big singles.

Just as his music has evolved, so has his style. While certain sneaker silos have remained relevant in Wiz’s rotation, his favorites in footwear and fashion continue to shift with the release of each album. On the day of the Khalifa launch, we take a look at Wiz Khalifa’s style and go-to kicks over the course of his come-up in this installment of CSS Spotlight.

Heavy Rotation: Air Jordan retros, Converse Chuck Taylors, Nike retros

Wiz Khalifa’s rise to the top has been a winding road paved by hard work. At only 16, Wiz was already getting attention from record labels and putting out mixtapes. His first album Show and Prove released in 2006, followed later by the success of the single “Say Yeah.” While Deal or No Deal would make noise, a string of acclaimed mixtapes saw Wiz rise up as one of the most buzzing young artists in hip-hop.

Early on, Wiz’s style was reminiscent of many of his next generation peers. Topical streetwear and retro sneakers were a staple of Khalifa’s wardrobe, with Flight Club apparel and grail status Jordans standing out on stage. Chuck Taylors also saw rotation early on, with many of his beginning footwear staples remaining relevant throughout his career.

Wiz Khalifa in the Nike Air Hoop Structure (photo via seastorrejon.blogspot.com)
Wiz Khalifa in the adidas Superstar Black/White (photo via imgkid)
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 7 “DMP Raptor” (photo by Skavenger Brandon via The Shoe Game)

Heavy Rotation: Converse Chuck Taylors, Air Jordan retros

After years of being championed by his fans and dubbed ‘next’ by more than a few media outlets, Wiz Khalifa became a household name with the release of Rolling Papers. “Black & Yellow” was an undeniable crossover hit, making the most of his range and ability to rap over high-tempo, electronic leaning beats.

The Taylor Gang general lived up to his billing by rocking Chucks on stage at many of his major TV or festival appearances. Retros remained in rotation, impressively many of which that hadn’t released in some time.

Wiz Khalifa in the Converse Chuck Taylor Low Red/White (photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images via Zimbio)
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” (photo by PacificCoastNews.com via Zimbio)
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 3 “True Blue” (photo by PacificCoastNews.com via Zimbio)

Heavy Rotation: Lace-up boots, Keds Champion, Converse Chuck Taylors, Retro Jordans

Following up Rolling Papers and the success of “Black & Yellow” was a tall task. Nevertheless, Wiz stayed busy in the following year and a half by making a movie, dropping a soundtrack, a mixtape, and the official follow-up, O.N.I.F.C. The album spawned the platinum single “Work Hard, Play Hard” as well as the well-received “Remember You” which featured The Weeknd. A winter release in 2012 would later spawn a summer tour in 2013 with fellow fly-guys A$AP Rocky and Trinidad Jame$.

The Andre 3000-esque album cover outfit would be telling of Wiz’s sartorial choices during this album run. For the most part, Wiz took a break from traditional sneakers, sporting punk rock lace-up boots or festival friendly Keds. Later on, he’d return to his retro roots, rocking vault Jordans and eventually releasing his first official collaboration with Converse.

Wiz Khalifa in Keds Champion Red/White (photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images via Zimbio)
Wiz Khalifa in Keds Champion Black/White (photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images via Zimbio)
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 6 Black/Infrared (photo by Gary Gershoff/Getty Images via Zimbio)

Heavy Rotation: Air Jordan 1s, Vans Old Skools, Converse Chuck Taylors, Air Jordan 4s

Blacc Hollywood drew visually from the Tumblr generation of young creatives while aiming for the highest levels of pop success. Inspired by the likes of Michael Jackson and Prince albums in regard to being packed with big records, Wiz’s 2014 release was powered by club anthem “We Dem Boyz” and more emotional tracks like “Promises” and the Nicki Minaj assisted “True Colors.”

On the foot, Wiz remained consistent, rocking retro silos of the most classic variety. The marquee models took well to a grunge aesthetic that pulls from street wear staples and the occasional high end piece, showing heavy shades of friend Ian Connor while matching up well with the VHS visuals provided by Uzi. A growing interest in skateboarding also saw Vans favorites added to the mix of his go-to Chucks and Jordans rotation.

Wiz Khalifa in the Converse Chuck Taylor Off White/White
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 3 “True Blue”
Wiz Khalifa in the Vans Old Skool Black/White
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 4 White/Cement

Heavy Rotation: Vans Old Skools, Vans Sk8-His, adidas Stan Smith, Converse Chuck Taylors, Air Jordan 1s, Nike Air Huaraches

Purveyor of cool pants, it is true that Wiz’s tall and lanky build makes him one of the best muses for any an outfit. Making up with Kanye and making way on his latest album, the lead-up to Khalifa has seen lots of the same sneakers introduced in his Ian Connor-era of style still wearing well along with some throwback Jordans from his early days.

Wiz Khalifa in the Vans Old Skool (photo by FameFlynet Pictures via Zimbio)
Wiz Khalifa in the Raf Simons x adidas Ozweego 2
Wiz Khalifa in the adidas Stan Smith
Wiz Khalifa in the Nike Air Huarache White/White (photo via Daily Mail)

Wiz Khalifa with the Air Jordan 1 “New Love”
Wiz Khalifa in the Supreme x Vans Sk8-Hi
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 6 “Oreo” (photo via The YBF)
Wiz Khalifa in the Air Jordan 1 “Shadow”
Wiz Khalifa in Custom Nike Air Force 1 Mids by JBF Customs
Wiz Khalifa in the Vans Sk8-Hi
Khalifa is available now on iTunes.
