As the 50th Super Bowl in NFL history is set to take place in Santa Clara this Sunday, plenty of football enthusiasts and prognosticators are still uncertain as to who will take the crown. Whether it’s the youthful and exuberant Carolina Panthers led by certain 2015 MVP Cam Newton, or the living legend Peyton Manning and his rugged Denver Broncos, both formidable teams will certainly make this spectacle a can’t miss.

However the dice may fall this weekend, it’s still a growing tradition of Super Bowl week to take a look back at the previous title games and celebrate the lore of various teams. Ranging from the Cowboys dynasties to the Patriots, this list of notable players and icons is vast. Ultimately, we’ll do the same, but from a different aspect as we present yet another Gridiron Kicks Spotlight, but this time looking at the Greatest Sneaker Moments in Super Bowl History.

To see the incredible list, flip through the pages below to enjoy.

Year: 1990 Ronnie Lott was Kam Chancellor before Kam ever patrolled a secondary on the gridiron. Lott’s ferocious nature and incredible tackling ability made him a force to be reckoned with in the 49ers’ secondary for years. Rumor has it that Lott even allowed for the severance of his own finger to get back into a game during his illustrious playing career.

With those notions provided, you can imagine how John Elway and company felt in Super Bowl XXIV as they took on the 49ers. In what would become a blowout in favor of the 49ers, Lott would start and contribute heavily while rocking this black and varsity red colorway of the Air Jordan 4.

Year: 1993 Being a Buffalo Bills fan during the 1990s had to be tough due to your team going to four straight Super Bowls and losing every one of them. Now while I apologize for opening old wounds you may find some solace in our latest selection as Bruce Smith donned the Nike Air Veer during Buffalo’s second matchup with the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII.

Finishing up his Hall of Fame career in Washington, Smith would continue to sport intrigue silhouettes during his tenure in the league.

Year: 1994 After spending his early days as an Atlanta Falcon, Deion Sanders found his way to the Bay as he became a member of the San Francisco 49ers during the 1994 NFL season. In a season that witnessed Sanders secure a Defensive Player of The Year award, he also showcased his latest signature model, the Nike Air Diamond Turf 2, in Super XXIX as the ‘Niners took on the San Diego Chargers.

Year: 1995 After capturing a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, Deion Sanders made the move to the Lone Star State after inking a historic seven year contract with the Dallas Cowboys to help bolster their roster. Not too far removed from two Super Bowl titles, the Cowboys felt as though this signing would help them regain their prominence.

That notion proved to be prophetic as the Cowboys returned to the Super Bowl to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Deion’s defensive back mate would secure the MVP, Sanders made plenty of noise as he caught a pass and limited the Steelers’ success, while rocking the Nike DT Max 96.

Year: 2000 Dexter McCleon may be one of the more lesser known names within our list of great sneaker moments in Super Bowl history, but this former starter for the St. Louis Rams incorporated a remarkable Super Bowl sneaker as he rocked the Nike Air Garnett III during his first Super Bowl appearance, definitely turning plenty of heads. It seems as though McCleon’s time on the artificial turf during St.Louis’ hey-day attributed to his dope sneaker choices.

Year: 2001 The St. Louis Rams were arguably at the peak of their powers during the 2002 NFL season which ultimately culminated in New Orleans, as they appeared in their second Super Bowl in three seasons. However, despite losing to the New England Patriots, who would go on to start a dynasty of their own, a couple of Rams starters showcased some incredible models, such as Dexter McCleon who rocked the Air Jordan 16 “Ginger” model and Torry Holt who laced up a Rams PE of the Nike Shox BB4 model.

Year: 2002 Super Bowl XXXVII was arguably the most intriguing Super Bowl from a sneaker standpoint as two Jordan Brand endorsers took the field. Those two endorsers would have Hall of Fame credentials as Warren Sapp and Charles Woodson competed against one another in San Diego.

Both of the aforementioned Jordan Brand athletes would rock respective PEs of the Air Jordan 9. In addition, Warren Sapp’s teammate Simeon Rice donned the Nike Air Mission as the Buccaneers capped off a convincing Super Bowl victory, dismantling the Oakland Raiders.

Year: 2004 It’s one thing to break your leg and return to action the following season, however, its another feat to break your leg and return weeks later to dominate the Super Bowl. Jordan Brand athlete and future Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens did that very thing as he returned to action in Super Bowl XXXIX, while screws remained in his leg from a late-season injury. Hauling in nine catches for 122 yards, Owens achieved this stellar performance while rocking an Eagles PE of the Air Jordan 13.

Year: 2012 Prior to being called out on national television by Richard Sherman, the narrative on Michael Crabtree was completely different in the eyes of the public. That couldn’t have been anymore evident than in Super Bowl XLVII, known as the “Harbaugh Bowl,” between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens.

During the game, Michael Crabtree seemed poised to be a prominent player in the contest. Catching five passes for 109 yards and one touchdown, Crabtree would garner this stellar statistical total while showcasing this 49ers PE of the Air Jordan IX Low.

Year: 2013 Earl Thomas is a missile; and this wasn’t anymore evident than in last year’s Super Bowl, as Thomas and the Seattle Seahawks dominated the Denver Broncos. With the Seahawks giving fits to the legend that is Peyton Manning, the performance showcased by the dominant crew has vaulted them into historic status.

As their play silenced critics, Earl Thomas showcased his stellar kicks by rocking this Seahawks PE of the Air Jordan 6. This Jordan Brand endorser is no stranger to incredible PEs, as Jordan Brand has unveiled yet another illustrious model that Earl will rock in Super Bowl XLIX.

Year: 2014 Looking to become the first Super Bowl champion to repeat as title crown holders since the early 2000s, the Seattle Seahawks were viable candidates to achieve this notion. With their formidable defense set to take on Tom Brady and company, Earl Thomas returned from a postseason injury to stifle one of the league’s iconic players, leading Brady to two interceptions.

Thomas would help his squad in two different Air Jordan PEs, the first one being the Air Jordan 7 and the second being the Jordan Super.Fly 3.

Super Bowl XXIV: Ronnie Lott
