With the 20th anniversary of Space Jam rapidly approaching, plenty of speculation is beginning to emerge of a potential 2016 retro release of the iconic “Space Jam” Air Jordan 11. Initially released in 2000 and then again in 2009, this colorway has grown to become one of the more sought after “grails” within the culture.

However, there is much more history within the lineage of this pair as it was actually one of the first Air Jordan 11 iterations to grace the hardwood within the NBA.

To see for yourself, scroll through the pages below to explore the detailed history.

After securing his third straight championship with the Chicago Bulls after the 1993 season, there wasn’t much else for Michael Jordan to accomplish. With his star status reaching levels unforeseen in the sport, the unfortunate circumstances arriving that summer would drive MJ away from the NBA, specifically the murder of his beloved father.

Taking a sabbatical from the game, Michael would venture to baseball and play a season and a half with the Birmingham Barons and additional ancillary squads. Although he was away from the hardwood, his next two signature models would release at retailers those being the Air Jordan 9 and Air Jordan 10.

Ultimately, the Air Jordan 10 would witness MJ’s comeback to the court in which he would don the number 45 and make his much needed return to the game.

During the 1995 NBA Playoffs, Michael Jordan would look to take down the youthful — and slightly dominant at times — Orlando Magic led by Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway. With its release not slated until the very next season, MJ would unveil the Air Jordan 11 in a variety of different makeups, including the “Space Jam” colorway that incorporated the “45” numerical badge along the heel.

Releasing during the Fall of 1996, the theatrical debut of Michael Jordan was by far one of the biggest hits across American cinema. In fact, Space Jam would grow to become the highest-grossing basketball movie of all time, bringing in approximately $230 Million in revenue. Featuring the likes of Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Charles Barkley, this film would watch the iconic characters of Warner Brothers seek the help of Michael Jordan as they looked to take on the newly “powered” MONSTARS in a basketball game.

With some of the NBA’s finest talents waiting in the balance, MJ and company would help defeat the MONSTARS in a galactic showdown in which MJ would sport the affectionately termed “Space Jam” Air Jordan 11s.

Hitting retailers in 2000, the Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” would help usher-in the new era of Saturday specific Jordan releases. With the 2000 release scheduled for a Wednesday, as like many of the Jordan releases of years prior, the pandemonium behind the launch caused for many to miss school, scheduled appearances and provided further chaos at various retailers.

By 2009, the second retro release of the colorway was just as frenzied as plenty lined up prior to the Christmas holiday to score a pair for their respective family members.

Some could make the case that the “Space Jam” Air Jordan 11 has been the most transcendent model of the lineage; again, arguably. That notion is bolstered by the abundance of celebrities and athletes spending time in the colorway such as NBA players like Jordan Crawford, Monta Ellis, Gilbert Arenas, Paul George and Stephen Jackson. Not to mention, Lil’ Wayne wore them during his 2010 Grammy Performance and CSS stalwart Jason Sudeikis also favors the model.

Image via UpscaleHype

With the 20th anniversary of Space Jam rapidly approaching, plenty of speculation is beginning to emerge of a potential 2016…

[1232710,3,1225574
1225546,1225452,1225659,1225484

2":"type-post

He’s BAAAAAACK
