Films act as a distinct marker of time. They allow individuals to reminisce on the time and place in which they remember first seeing the theatrical piece. They also tend to lend inspiration — infinite amounts of inspiration, if done properly. This couldn’t have been more evident than with the recent news of the Nike Class of ’97 Pack hitting retailers.

Paying homage to the iconic film, He Got Game, the Nike Foamposite Pro “Pearl” and the Nike Air Zoom Hawk Flight have a certain gravitas that should implore sneakerheads to take a long look at the duo.

So with that in mind, the Class of ’97 Pack headlines the latest edition of Throwback Thursday as we’ll take a look at this history of the film, sneakers listed and its cultural impact.

To see more, flip through the pages below to enjoy.

Releasing in 1998, the cult classic He Got Game was certain to be a respective gem from the onset. Directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington and Ray Allen, this film told the story of a High School phenom, Jesus Shuttlesworth, who endured the rigors of being the number one prospect in the nation. In addition, a certain caveat is making his decision tough as his controversially adjudicated father looked to persuade him to a certain school in order to lessen his prison time.

Although my personal cliff note version of film pales in comparison, the abundance of Nike silhouettes and Jordan staples within the film allowed for sneakerheads to hold this in high standard. From the Air Jordan 13 to the Nike Air Foamposite One and Pro, Spike Lee’s direction and cinematic approach helped elevate the culture in many ways and gave perpetual “life” to a variety of kicks.

In one of the more powerful and poignant scenes within He Got Game, Ray Allen and Denzel Washington discuss their prior issues while Allen’s character sports the “Pearl” iteration of the Nike Air Foamposite Pro. Featuring “Pearl” hues throughout the upper with shades of black canvassing the Nike branding and the inner lining, this model was a strong colorway for the lineage.

Initially releasing back in 1997, the Nike Air Foamposite Pro drew a ton of commentary due to its high price-point and unique design. Featuring an inner-constructed bootie and carbon fiber plates along the midsole, finely-paced traction patterning hubs added further performance functionality. Sported within the film’s climatic one-on-one scene, the Nike Air Zoom Hawk Flight is the other silhouette featured within the Class of ’97 pack. Designed by noted creator Eric Avar, the aforementioned model features a cascading upper employing both lateral and medial overlays that shaped and contoured around the entire upper.

Furthermore, the Nike Air Zoom Hawk Flight was sported regularly by Gary Payton during the 1997-98 campaign in which the guard averaged 19 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds per outing.

It’s obvious that the cultural impact of He Got Game is vast and seemingly grows the further away we get from its initial theatrical release. With the jersey of Jesus Shuttlesworth being made available at retailers and an iteration of an Air Jordan silhouette being coined as well, plenty can surely attribute the sneaker influence to the cult-like following.

Even multi-billion dollar corporations such as the NBA have referenced the film, as back in 2013 during a contest between the Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat, nicknames were donned on every uniform spotted. With Ray Allen playing for the Miami Heat at the time, “Shuttlesworth” would be sported across his nameplate and the “He Got Game” Air Jordan 13s would be rocked on his feet.

With the Class of ’97 Pack being made available this weekend it is easy to see why this duo is so important because it further entrenches the iconic status of the popular film. Although its steep price tag may scare plenty, the sneakers themselves may be worth it.

A Spike Lee Joint: He Got Game
