Each and every year, the Doernbecher name is vaunted amongst sneaker enthusiasts as the lore of the respective designs heighten with the discussion of exclusivity. However, very few people understand the impact that the Doernbecher name exudes as this Children’s Hospital in Oregon continues to save lives each and every day, and through the help of Nike, allow their respective patients to showcase their creativity and individuality.

So within this latest edition of Snkrs Day Throwback Thursday, we’ll take a look at one of the most notable creations from the initiative in the Air Jordan 3 “Doernbecher” from 2010 and its respective impact.

To see more, flip through the pages below to enjoy.

Opening its door in 1926, the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is a public facility looking to benefit and assist children suffering from clinical illnesses such as cancer. Deriving its name from its founder Frank Doernbecher, this facility has developed to become one of the more prestigious children’s hospital in the nation with its quality work and care. With this hospital being located in Portland, Oregon, merely a “stone’s throw” away from the Nike facilities, over the course of time this philanthropic relationship would grow.

Specifically, beginning in 2007, with the launch of the first Doernbecher x Nike “Freestyle” collaboration.

As previously mentioned, 2007 would be the inaugural year for the collaboration between the Dorenbecher Children’s Hospital and the Nike brand. Dubbing it the “Freestyle Program” this initiative would enlist the help of several artistic patients of the hospital in which they would create 1-of-1 iterations of their favorite Nike or Air Jordan models.

The first Jumpman x Doernbecher model would be the DB Air Jordan 2 created in 2007, fusing a dark color-palette of mostly black, pro-gold and lucky green. Designed by Sheridan Brenton, the makeup would kickoff the series and send sneakerheads to absurd levels of fandom; albeit for a great cause.

Years would pass from the initial start of the DB campaign and with the continuance of the series, it became certain it was success. However, the ascension would grown further as during the 2010 campaign as the ever-so coveted Air Jordan 3 DB would be unveiled. Designed by Cole Johanson, the creative kid decided to provide a unique take to arguably the strongest Air Jordan silhouette by canvassing the 3 in a mostly red hue while fusing black accents and a black midsole.

In addition, the model would rest atop of a translucent outsole while utilizing some of Cole’s favorite word marks such as “Strength” and “Courage.” Also, the design inspiration would drive from Cole’s love for spaghetti and chocolate.

The shoe would re-release in 2013 to add even more momentum to the Doernbecher program.

Since its release in 2010 and re-release in 2013, the lore for this specific model has grown exponentially due to its exclusive nature and sartorial acclaim. We’ve witnessed the likes of our very own George Kiel sport the model along with celebrities that includes the likes of Ludacris, Fat Joe, Questlove and B.O.B.

Also, we’ve seen this silhouette make its way to the hardwood as Nate Robinson wore the model during his tenure with the Chicago Bulls and Sneak Peek’s own Wilson Chandler and Nick Young.

The Doernbecher Hospital
