As the NFL season reaches its third week of the 2015 campaign, a variety of stars have sported intriguing silhouettes ranging from notable Nike Football staples to Air Jordans. The aforementioned Air Jordans have been wide-ranging as the various endorsers across the league have been fixtures of the Gridiron Kicks’ Starting-11 countdown.

Throughout the month of September, we’ll continue to highlight the notable Air Jordan silhouettes that have made their way onto the NFL gridiron. Within this edition of Snkrs Day Throwback Thursday, the Air Jordan 9 is featured, as the rather “niche” model has been seen throughout three different decades.

To see more, check out the video above and flip through the pages below to enjoy additional history.

It may be hyperbole to consider the Air Jordan 9 to be “The Forgotten” silhouette within the Air Jordan lineage, but with the circumstances involved, it’s easy to see how that assertion was derived. For starters, the Air Jordan 9 was the first model to not be sported by Michael Jordan on the hardwood during his Chicago Bulls tenure. Retiring prior to the 1993-94 NBA season to pursue a baseball career, the Air Jordan 9 would arrive in a “cleated” form as Jordan sported this during his stint with the Birmingham Barons.

However, plenty of NBA stars looked to prop up the silhouette in MJ’s absence as we witnessed the likes of Penny Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and BJ Armstrong wear the Air Jordan 9.

During the early 2000s Warren Sapp was a pure menace throughout the NFL. Thriving in Tampa Bay’s patented “Tampa 2” defense, Sapp would help lead the once-lowly Buccaneers to a Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXXVII. Taking on the Oakland Raiders, the Buccaneers defense would stifle Oakland’s potent attack, as Sapp would don the Air Jordan 9 in subdued Bucs hues as he collected his first and only Super Bowl ring.

Coincidentally, Charles Woodson was a part of the previously discussed Super Bowl that involved Warren Sapp. However, Woodson was on the losing team as the Oakland Raiders suffered an embarrassing defeat and in fact, have not experienced a winning season since.

Sporting the Air Jordan 9 in a rather recognizable PE, Woodson would venture back from a broken leg in order to participate in the biggest game of them all. Although his first Oakland tenure would end a few years later, Woodson has found himself to be a future first ballot Hall-of-Famer and a staple within the Jordan Brand.

The beginning of Donovan McNabb’s career was rather remarkable, the latter however was mired in turmoil and poor play. However, there is no denying his impact as McNabb is also another notable early-2000s NFL star to sport the Air Jordan 9 during games. Arriving in a mostly white iteration with Eagles hues around the mudguard, McNabb would dance around his competition in this turf based PE during the 2002 season and NFC Championship game against the St. Louis Rams. Easily the most electrifying talent to ever spend time as a Jordan Brand member was Randy Moss. With his rare blend of speed, size and fluidity, Moss would enter the league like not other setting rookie records and vaulting to become arguably the best player in the league.

During his career, Moss would secure passes and score touchdowns in a variety of Air Jordan PEs, one of them most notably being the Air Jordan 9. Utilizing a mostly white base, similar to Donovan McNabb’s PE, Moss’ iteration would see both cleat and turf form as he would rock them during the 2003 campaign.

During the mid-2000s the Air Jordan 9 took a bit of a hiatus within the NFL as Jordan Brand’s main endorser of Terrell Owens opted for other models such as the Air Jordan 3, 6 and 7. However, by 2010 the new wave of Jordan Brand endorsers brought some life back into the ninth Air Jordan silhouette as Michael Crabtree, Hakeem Nicks and Andre Johnson all spent time in the silo.

In addition to the aforementioned trio, Josh Freeman during his tenure with the Buccaneers also donned a pewter and grey PE of the model.

As the NFL season reaches its third week of the 2015 campaign, a variety of stars have sported intriguing silhouettes…

[1221062,34
1225677,1225587,1208882,1225484

2":"type-post

“The Forgotten One” // The Air Jordan 9
