Although designers often come up with the entire look of a shoe’s components, parts and panels, they don’t always execute all of the colorways and materials that’ll eventually end up releasing. That’s usually up to a category’s color, graphics and materials (CGM) team to execute.

With the advent of custom sites like NIKEiD, Nike Basketball’s Design Director Leo Chang recently went wild on his latest design, and ordered up three colorways of the new Hyperdunk 2015.

“I had a lot of fun on there! I went a little crazy and got like three colorways on iD,” beams Chang. “I thought they did a good job of letting you call out those blocks really boldly.”

He’s got an admittedly more muted and darker taste when it comes to sneakers and clothing, so his pairs are certainly more tame than the loud and more retail-friendly editions seen now in stores.

“Sometimes, I love to see the whole triangle wedge plus the heel part blocked as one. And other times I think it’s cool when just the triangle alone is,” he mentions. “Or, you could also do the heel and triangle in colors separately. You could have those options and that can help to extend the life of it. It was always about keeping the toolbox open.”
