Bo knows football, Bo knows baseball, but do you know Bo?

This week we take a look back at the monster career of two sport star Bo Jackson and his amazing line of Nike Trainers. With all the buzz surrounding the recent re-releases of the Nike Air Trainer SC ?Auburn? and Nike Air Trainer 3 ?Medicine Ball? it?s only right that we pay tribute to Bo Jackson.

Nike Air Trainer 1- The Air Trainer 1 was the first marquee training shoe introduced by Nike and was endorsed by Bo during his rookie season with the Oakland Raiders. Although Bo was technically ?second string? to All-Pro running back Marcus Allen, Bo put up starter numbers with a 221 yard rushing performance on Monday Night Football. Bo torched the Seattle Seahawks for 3 touchdowns and ran over linebacker Brian Bosworth who bad mouthed him before the game, ultimately ending his career.

The Trainer 1 has been retroed countless times in many memorable colorways as well as SB make-ups. From the Twisted Prep pack to the Clark Kent 112 pack, the original Trainer keeps coming back stronger than ever. Oh, did we mention some guy named Tinker Hatfield designed these? Taking cues from the Trainer 1, the Trainer 2 incorporated the same midsole and forefoot strap. To improve breathability Nike added mesh on the side panel and lowered the cut. Staying true to the training inspiration, the shoes were marketed as Totally Washable, meaning that they could be thrown in the washing machine with the rest of their work out laundry. Years later many popular retro make ups have dropped, most notably the pack Nike did in conjunction with streetwear legends Supreme. Nike supplied Bo with the Trainer 3, an updated version of the previous two models showcasing visible air and rubber side support. With a silhouette reminiscent of the Air Alpha Force, the Trainer 3 was a comfortable ride suitable for all surfaces. Weight training inspired the popular ?Medicine Ball? colorway that Spike Lee donned in Do the Right Thing. Almost two decades later the world of film would touch the Trainer 3 again as they were featured in the famous Transformers pack.

Nike Air Trainer SC- By 1989 Bo was in full swing with the Royals and full speed with the Raiders setting career highs in home runs and rushing yards. The ball player was named MVP of the 1989 MLB All-Star Game after a solid offense-defense performance that saw him go yard on his first all-star plate appearance.

The Trainer SC marked the new direction of the Trainer series as well as the start of the ?Bo Knows? campaign. A string of ads depicted Bo playing various sports with cameos from the likes of Michael Jordan, Kurt Gibson, and Wayne Gretzky with music from Bo Diddley. ?Auburn? and ?Beet? colorways made the SC an instant classic. A departure from the previous models, the SC dropped the forefoot strap and featured visible air. The SC has been retroed in mid and low cuts and has seen a slew of new schemes from the popular Escape to the wild Mardi Gras.

Nike Air Trainer SC 2- A hard tackle by Cincinatti?s Kevin Walker in the ?91 playoffs would mark the end of Bo?s football career. Legend has it that after the play Bo popped his hip back into socket on the field. The Raider?s trainer commented “Bo says he felt his hip come out of the socket, so he popped it back in, but that’s just impossible, no one’s that strong.” His devotion to training would go a step further as he would enter rehab in hopes of returning to the baseball diamond.

Aggressive, edgy, and in your face, the Trainer 2 SC would push the limits of design and performance. Visible air, a padded collar, and a revamped strap made this one of the most eye catching trainers ever with neon colorways synonymous with the early ?90s. The shoe was released in both mid and low top form but sneakerheads are yet to be blessed with a retro.

Nike Air Trainer Max 91- A hip replacement and extensive rehab caused Bo to miss the entire 1992 baseball season. During his rehab he had a short stint with a semi-pro basketball team in Los Angeles before he was ready to take the field for the Chicago White Sox. During rehab he promised his dying mother that he would play again and hit a home run for her. She died before his comeback debut against the New York Yankees where he hit a home run bomb at his first at bat. The next day Nike ran a full page ad in USA Today with the text ?Bo Knew?.

Bo?s last signature trainer, the Trainer Max ?91, was a culmination of the best attributes of his previous Nike?s. A waffle outsole from the Trainer 3, breathable mesh from the Trainer 2, and the aggressive cut of the SC models made the ?91s a big hit. The shoe is best known for its grey/yellow-black colorway and has gotten the retro treatment like previous Bo?s.

Bo knows football, Bo knows baseball, but do you know Bo?
