“If I’ve got like Drake on me, then Kevin Love sets a pick, then LeBron’s on me, then I have to figure out if I can post up Kevin Love on Drake?”

Not many people dream aloud about strategy, but that’s what makes Lil Dicky different. Aside from one day dominating the rap scene and soon after creating the next Curb Your Enthusiasm, the “Jewish Rec League Stephen Curry” hopes to eventually start a rapper/NBA player 2-on-2 tournament for charity. For a man that DMs with KD and gets love on Nah Right, this dream may not be far fetched.

So what’s Dicky wear on court, on stage and even on dates? We found out for the latest My 5.

Lil Dicky: “As a kid, I could never play basketball in a pair of shoes that weren’t a player’s shoes. I was so into T-Mac. Those came out at the age when I’d lower the hoop to 8-feet and be able to dunk. I loved the black and blue color scheme and how they swerved to the left. They just make me think of childhood so I wanted them back. I play outdoors in them now. I don’t really wear shoes as a fashion thing for the most part, I’m pretty plain. But those I wear when I’m lounging or playing any outdoor sport.”

Lil Dicky: “When I’m really playing basketball I wear my Kobes. I don’t think I’d be who I am as a human being if Kobe never existed. I’m from Philadelphia and he played high school right outside of Philly. When I went to overnight hoops camp, one of his teammates was my counselor and he’d tell me stories about how Kobe would literally get the keys to the gym and be in the gym at 5 AM everyday. I then would set my alarm clock one week for 5 AM and would just shoot for three hours before anybody woke up. That premise, I just applied to everything in life and now it’s rap. Kobe’s work ethic is just so visible to me. He’s not out there to make friends, he’s just out there to win. I think that’s kind of how I approach life.”

Lil Dicky: “I love Nike as a brand for the same reasons I love Kobe. I’ll wear those a lot more on dates because those blend right in. It’s just a cool shoe that wasn’t too flashy, just a very subtle shoe.”

Lil Dicky: “I had a session with a producer and he had like 12 shoe boxes laying around. I asked him about them and he said he got a lot of these Gourmets. He asked me if I wanted one and I said sure not even knowing what they were. I opened them up and I couldn’t believe how much I loved them. Mine now are so worn down that I refuse to give up on them because I do almost all my shows in them. They’re like woodgrain, which I think is cool, but they have the feel of an athletic shoe so I can move around and jump around on stage like they’re a basketball shoe. I think they’re the lightest shoe I’ve ever felt by far and I think those are my favorites. They work with jeans, too. I can wear those on a date and feel confident. They’re now a little too worn to be my date shoe. I’m not overly fashionable but I’ve got a few aggressive shirts and if I’m wearing one of those shirts I’ll wear those shoes, too.”

Lil Dicky: “The two biggest Iverson memories I have are when he crossed over Michael Jordan and when he stepped over Tyronn Lue in the NBA Finals. When he stepped over Tyronn Lue after he made the shot was easily my most happiest feeling as a sports fan in my life. Iverson is another person where I wouldn’t be who I am today without him. He brought everyone in Philly together. In Philly if you’re a hard worker, people are going to love you. He was unapologetically himself and he kept it so real. If you go back and look at his interviews he’s just talking from the heart. The sense of realness, effort and putting your heart into something is what I took from Iverson and obviously he had a huge hip-hop presence. I wonder with me being into basketball how Iverson impacted how I was drawn to hip-hop culture. I hope you hear a Lil Dicky feature with Jewelz one day. I wanna have a song with him and I want to have a song with Will Smith one day.”

Catch Lil Dicky on tour by checking out tickets here.
