words & interview // Ian Stonebrook:

Make no mistake, KB is soft spoken, but he sure has a lot to say about his kicks. Joining the likes of Lecrae in a new wave of Christian artists with a modern sound, the Reach Records rapper definitely finds joy in the design details and self expression evoked through footwear. Well aware of trends but even more aware of his own style, KB’s rotation sees everything from vault Jordans to contempoary Kanyes. See what he’s rocking on stage, on dates and on the regular in the latest My 5.

KB: “Those are my performing shoes. Most of the pictures that fans post online of me at concerts are in those shoes. They are literally the most comfortable pair of shoes I own. I love how the design is almost a shoe inside of a shoe. Unlike Air Force 1s and other shoes that come with straps, the bunny ear straps on the 8s last very long. Even if they bend the wrong way in the suitcase, all you’ve gotta do is restrap them and wear them like that for about an hour. Also, the quality of this shoe is just fantastic! These came out in 2007 and they look like I’ve only had them for a year or so — and I got them used! There’s some paint cracking, but I like it. The shoe has a story and it has some character. For me, I take great joy and pride in the minor creases and the little paint cracks. It’s a champion, it’s a trooper of a shoe.”

“Part of me doesn’t want to re-buy them, I kind of just want to restore the ones I already have. I’ve just got a special loyalty to classics and things that have antiquity. I’d rather spend the money restoring the shoes I already have rather than re-buying the new retros.” KB: “I’m not trying to be one who is floating with the popular trends, but I love the Yeezy Boosts. I love it, I love that shoe. [Laughs] However, I feel that the Boost technology was a little oversold as I thought it would make a bigger difference on my heel. I’d give it a 7/10 as far as comfort. But the design of the shoe, I think it’s close to flawless. I’m also big on presentation and I really enjoyed the way that they packaged it. It’s almost like they’re giving you a cake with the size of the box. You slide the top off and inside there’s this package that looks like there’s a note in it, but there’s shoe strings. Then there’s another layer of bags that are individual to each shoe. I really enjoyed that and the artist’s thought on the whole experience.”

“For me, one of my favorite things to do is take my wife out on dates. We get really, really fly and I like to throw those bad boys on when we go out on the town. I also wore those in a music video I did with Lecrae called “Sidewayz.” We both had them on in there. I had the idea of kind of creating a hip-hop version of Inception or Interstellar and the Yeezy Boost had that space type of feel to it, so I wore them in that video for that purpose. By the grace of almighty God, I paid almost nothing as they were sponsored by Forgiven boutique in Chicago. They would’ve been worth the investment, as it’s a beautiful shoe. For lack of a better word, it’s a sexy shoe. [Laughs] I’m sorry.”

KB: “I’ve got to put an asterisk on those because the red suede is tripping. Without any exposure to the elements — I haven’t been walking in the rain or nothing — the suede looks like it’s starting to fade. But I like those shoes because I think the design is genius with the 14 designed after Jordan’s Ferrari. One of my favorite features of the shoe is the black tongue that runs all the way up the foot. If you’re wearing skinny black jeans it almost looks like the jeans extend as part of the shoe. It looks incredible. It’s sleek and smooth. I like minimal and those shoes are right on the edge of being too much, but I feel like they stay right in that sweet spot.”

KB: “I came up on those in Corpus Christi, TX in 2013. I’ve got a homie there that’s a sneakerhead. That brother has shoes from all over the world. I told him that I wanted that shoe and he went deep and pulled off some connects. I love classic shoes and I feel like they have a certain sense of integrity and character that transcends whatever is happening in culture. While the Y3s have a futuristic sense, I can still put my retro 6s next to those and we can still marvel at the creativity. Just like classic albums that are always going to be timeless, I feel like those are timeless.”

KB: “I may need to switch these out because one of my good New York friends is challenging their authenticity. I did some extensive study on it and it looks like they all checked out for me, but he wants me to take them to a shoe convention for the final say. Unfortunately, the “Solar Reds” are a very well replicated shoe. I had to say that for my own conscious’ sake, but I believe that they’re real. The album that I dropped, Tomorrow We Live, uses the colorway of that shoe where the cover is salmon with the ashy black. The shoe is just one to look at. When I first got them, I put them in a case because they felt like a trophy to me. They’re so well designed and they feel like a combination of a lot of the shoes that we liked. The toe box reminds me of a Jordan, the strap reminds you of a Deion Sanders shoe and the glow-in-the-dark bottom takes you back to the LA Gears we had as kids. It’s kind of got a little bit of everything and I find it highly impressive that they thought to work in snake scales on the side of the shoe. Who thinks like that? Kanye and the brother who designed these really were on one, I think it was genius. That is a shoe that really doesn’t need much of anything else going on with the outfit, those are my universal joints. If all else fails, just throw those bad boys on.”

Keep up with KB on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
