With today’s news of the return of the Nike Air Trainer III “Medicine Ball” we decided to take a look back at all the classic Bo Jackson shoes. While there have been countless colorways released as retros, we wanted to pay homage to the best original colorways of each Bo Jackson shoe.

Nike Air Trainer 1 “Chlorophyll”

Shoe: Nike Air Trainer 1

Color: “Chlorophyll”

Year: 1987

YEARS before volt became a staple color for Nike Training, the new line of products were introduced with a basic base of colors with the pop of Chlorophyll.

Nike Air Trainer III “Medicine Ball”

Shoe: Nike Air Trainer III (originally named Nike Air Trainer SC)

Colorway: “Medicine Ball”

Year: 1988

Ready for a confusing lesson in Nike names?

The Nike Air Trainer SC had three models – the Nike Air Trainer SC (now known as the Nike Air Trainer III), the Nike Air Trainer SC II, and the Nike Air Trainer SC III (now known as the Nike Air Trainer SC). Where and when the names got mixed up, I have no idea, but one thing is for certain – the Medicine Ball colorway is one of the greatest to ever grace a Bo Jackson trainer.

Nike Air Trainer SC II “Infrared”

Shoe: Nike Air Trainer SC II

Colorway: “Infrared”

Year: 1989

Before MJ beat the Lakers in the Nike Air Jordan VI and before the Nike Air Max 90 hit the streets, Infrared had been introduced to the market. The colorway debuted on the Nike Air Trainer SC II in 1989 a year before the Air Max 90 debuted and two years before the Nike Air Jordan VI. It was a toss up deciding which was the best colorway of this shoe considering that Volt was another OG make up and we all know how popular that shade of yellow is today…

Nike Air Trainer SC “Auburn”

Shoe: Nike Air Trainer SC (originally known as Nike Air Trainer SC III)

Colorway: “Auburn”

Year: 1990

As we discussed earlier, when this shoe was first retroed it received the shortened name of “Nike Air Trainer SC” despite the fact that there was another shoe from the Bo Jackson line by the same name. This model of Bo Jacksons is one of the most recognized and most released to date. While many heads were big fans of the Black/Grey colorup as a nod to the Los Angeles Raiders, this colorway paid tribute to Bo Jackson’s alma mater of Auburn.

One fun fact about this shoe is that the “sail cloth” straps on the shoe was the inspiration behind what would later become Nike Flywire.

Nike Air Trainer Max 91 Grey/Yellow

Shoe: Nike Air Trainer Max ’91

Colorway: Grey/Yellow

Year: 1991

While Bo Jackson never had his name officially tied to any of the Trainers he endorsed back in the day, the Nike Air Trainer Max ’91 is remembered by many as the final Bo Jackson shoe. The following year, Nike had a new initiative for the Training department at Nike when the Nike Huarache technology crossed all categories hitting running, basketball, and training.
