Once upon a time, Black Friday was reserved for those hunting for deals on computers, laptops, TVs, and video games. Today, while many of those items are up for grabs on the annual shopping holiday, Black Friday has quickly become an event for sneakers. This year, virtually ever sneaker brand, small and large, are releasing some of their best kicks on the day after Thanksgiving including Jordan Brand. This Friday will see the return of the “Black/Infrared” Air Jordan 6 as the shoe celebrates 23 years since its debut in 1991.

With so much attention this Black Friday, we decided to take a look back at the history of retro Jordans dropping the day after Turkey Day.

The Debut – 2003

Air Jordan 12 “Nubuck” (2003)
Year: 2003 Jordan Brand was far ahead of their time when they released the “Nubuck” Air Jordan 12 retro set as an online exclusive. The package cost $200 and included the shoes, hoodie, and pinwheel hat. This was Jordan’s first ever online exclusive and was many sneakerhead’s first online cop.

The Return – 2009

Air Jordan 12 “Flu Game” (2009)
Year: 2009 Jordan Brand celebrated Michael Jordan’s historic performance from the 1997 NBA Finals where he played a remarkable game putting up 37 points despite suffering from “flu-like symptoms”. While the illness has recently been disputed for being a case of food poisoning due to bad pizza, the stats and sickface smiley face etched on the nubuck upper still work.

Double Up – 2010

Air Jordan 13 “Flint” (2010)
Air Jordan 7 “Bin 23” (2010)
Year: 2010 For the first time, Jordan Brand dropped two pairs of retros on Black Friday in 2010. The first, and more widely available, was the Air Jordan 13 “Flint” which saw their first return since the first initial retro of the colorway in 2005. The second pair was the highly chased Air Jordan 7 from the “Bin 23” collection.

23 Years In The Making – 2011

Air Jordan 3 Black/Cement (2011)
Year: 2011 The Air Jordan 3 in the Black/Cement colorway released for the fifth time in 2011 on Black Friday during the 23rd anniversary of the AJ3’s 1988 debut. While the shoe had released only 3 years prior as part of a Countdown Pack, many heads rejoiced at the thought of not having the task of unloading a black suede Air Jordan 20 that literally everyone was trying to unload.

Year of “Bred” – 2012

Air Jordan 4 Black/Red (2012)
Year: 2012 Sneaker bloggers and hypebeasts got too lazy to call these or the Jordan 11s that released the same year as “black and red” and rather opted for “bred”. Whatever you want to call the colorway, the shoes were a banger and a hot grab for the holiday season.
