Our Community Collections series is back after a brief intermission.

This time we focus our attention on Los Angeles native Long Ly. The basketball and sneaker aficionado is a true believer of wearing your shoes and is certainly not opposed to sporting vintage footwear on court that you forgot about or haven’t seen in years (just check out his Instagram account – @myshoelife). Ly’s entire collection consists of Jordans, a multitude of basketball shoes, random Air Force Ones and SB Dunks, but today we take a closer look at a hefty number of Jordans and vintage Nike Basketball gems in his stockpile of sneakers.

Check out Ly’s rarest pair, his most frequently worn sneaker, his personal favorite and more in today’s edition of Community Collections below.

Sneaker Story

“Growing up, I was blessed and very fortunate to have parents that were willing and able to get me the shoes that were somewhat trendy from Vans, Pumas and AirWalks, to Reeboks, Nikes and of course, Jordans. At the same time, my parents never spoiled me with every single release or what have you. Like most others, they bought me one, maybe two pairs of shoes per school year. Some of the more notable shoes I had as a kid were the Jordan IV White/Cement (1stJordans), and the Jordan V Black and Metallic Silver in 89, 90… then skip over to the Jordan IX Charcoal, Shadow X and Concord and IE XIs as those came out, as well with a few other notables from the Nike Basketball franchise along the way. However, I wouldn’t say that I was collecting shoes until I got to college where I started making money on my own, and had two roommates that were employed by the largest sneaker company in the world. This is where it became excessive and out of control. With their discount, and the influx of retro sneakers, I felt like I was able to get everything I missed out on growing up… for a fraction of what it was supposed to cost. Now, the shoes were beginning to stockpile. One part of the closet became filled with dunks and air force I’s to random casuals and runners, and the other part became filled with Jordans and basketball shoes. This infatuation consumed my life like a disease where everything seemed like a great deal and everything seemed like it was a must have. Like with everything else, it had to come to an end, and it did when we graduated. Fast forward a few years… I still remained pretty involved with buying sneakers, but it was nowhere near as bad as it was before. I had to settle down a bit, once marriage; kids; and a home were involved, but I still continue to add to my collection of 250 plus pairs. Though it may seem like I have a lot of sneakers, I really can’t say that my collection comes close to being as exclusive as the collectors of today. I just don’t have the connections, the patience or the excessive cash flow to afford me exclusive stuff like Yeezy’s, PE’s or what have you . I really hate using the word collected, but for conversation sake… I’ve collected everything from SB Dunk, to Air Force Is, to the less heralded SB models, but my favorites have always been retro Jordans and basketball. For this feature, I am going to focus just on some Jordans I have, and some vintage Nike Basketball shoes that some of you nostalgic folks may enjoy. I hope you like the feature… welcome to my shoe life. ”

Personal Favorite: Nike Air Max CW

“It’s always so hard for me to pick out one personal favorite shoe. I wanted to exclude Jordans from this, because like a lot of people, my favorite Jordans are the Jordan XI Concord and White/Cement IV. The reason the Air Max CW is one of my personal favorites is not because of the shoe itself, or because Chris Webber was one of my favorite players, but instead, it was because of the CW logo. I still remember seeing the shoes for the first time in 95/96 and I was just in awe. The huge Air Max unit in the rear, coupled with the exposed Air Max unit in the forefoot as well! You have to remember, this was never done on a basketball shoe before., and was just seen on the AM95 shortly prior to this. Despite the technology, and awesome overall design, it was the logo that grabbed my attention. Nike has a history of awesome logos and player branding, but I was a youngin in high school, and just thought it was so clever how they incorporated the C and the W into a rim and net.”

Kickstarter: Nike Air Force Max B

“This shoe is by no means, the shoe that I first fell in love with. It is not even the first shoe I ever had. Instead, this is the first unnecessary shoe I purchased…just because I got a discount. It was also the first shoe that I dedicated just for indoor basketball. It was a Nike friends and family weekend, and I was at the Niketown in Caesar’s Palace. The coupon would expire in a few hours, and I couldn’t let it go to waste. I always liked this model, but this is far from being an OG colorway or anything. Oh well, “its not that bad,” I thought, and I do need a shoes to play in. Done. From that point on, buying shoes was not always about fulfilling a necessity or a need. It just became ridiculousness.”

Rarest Pair: Nike Air Flightposite “Pearl White”

“Those who know me, or have followed me on Instagram know that I do not really have any rare “heat” or hyped up shoes. I don’t have any Yeezy’s, or Oregon shoes, or PEs, or anything else that would require me sacrificing an organ or a limb. So for my most rare pair, I go back to vintage basketball and feature a pair of 1999 Nike Flightposites in the pearl white colorway. However, the thing that separates this pair from what most people have is the fact that it was a sample pair with an Air Max heel instead of the low profile zoom. I know it is nothing extremely special, but to this day, I have not seen another pair like it. I hope you enjoy!”

Oldest Pair: Nike Zoom Flight 96 “Olympic”

“The oldest shoe I currently have that is still wearable is the Air Jordan X Shadows, and my overall oldest shoe is a pair of 1992 Air Direct Flights. Again, I am doing my best not to include Jordans on this short list, and the Air Direct Flights recently crumbled. This leaves me with the OG Penny Hardaway Olympic Zoom Flight 96. I love this shoe in general, and actually have a pair of the original black and royal colorway, along with a retro pair of the white/grey OG color as well. But it is the USA color that is my favorite of this model. The white, accented with the navy carbon fiber and the gold trim just kills it. Even with all the different products available for me to deoxidize the soles, I decided to leave it as is, because I feel the yellow soles actually looks nice and it is almost like it was meant to be that way.”

Most Frequent Wear: Air Jordan 13 “Flint”

“Honestly, in the line of work that I am in, I do not get to wear a lot of my sneakers regularly. And in terms of basketball shoes, I rotate through those almost as often as I rotate through clothes. I know I wanted to keep Jordans off of this list, but my most worn shoes are probably my original Air Jordan flint XIII’s. In terms of colorways, this is probably my favorite. I just love how the the colors come together on this particular shoe and I just think the shoes go well with anything, on court of off.

I would like to acknowledge and thank my two roommates, @Sukheenee22 and @bengeee30 and also @Namerz99, @Kalvin008 and of course @Croatianstyle and @ProjectBlitzLA for the continued hook ups. Special thanks to @PhotographybyV for the pics!”
