By now, you know what to expect from Nick Young. Or do you?

The lively Los Angeles Lakers guard is erratic by nature – in a good way – which makes his on-court footwear selections vastly intriguing. So naturally, we have come to expect the unexpected when it comes to Swaggy P in whatever he does. Before the season kicks off, we attempt to find out what’s next for the two-time Kicks On Court Champion.

In today’s installment of our Kicks On Court Diaries series, Young discusses his sneaker research over the summer, his effect on the Kicks On Court landscape and what we can expect from him, shoe-wise, this season.

RELATED: Kicks On Court Diaries – Sole Access: Inside the Portland Trail Blazers Locker Room

Interview by George Kiel III

Snkrs Day: First off, how did the surgery go on the thumb?

Nick Young: It went really well. I’m just itching to get back on the court now. Thanks for asking though, my man.

Snkrs Day: Sure thing. So, let’s jump right into it. What has the reigning Kicks On Court Champion been up to this summer?

Nick Young: Not much, man. Just working out and prepping for the season. Believe it or not, shoe-wise, I did a lot of researching on which sneakers I plan on bringing out this season. I didn’t pick up a lot this summer because I usually get most of my shoes throughout the course of a season, but I definitely did my research on the web about some different shoes I plan to get pretty soon.

Snkrs Day: What did you come up with through your research?

Nick Young: I really feel like Nike needs to release some more of the old high-tops that the big men, like David Robinson, used to wear. It’s hard to find those old-school Nike Force shoes that are in playing condition. I’m really looking to bring out shoes from that early ’90s era this time around, but I have to make sure they’re in good condition.

Snkrs Day: I hear you. That might be tough. I know you’re a big Nike Kobe fan, so with him returning to the fold, how does that potentially affect what you wear on court?

Nick Young: I’ve been thinking about that a lot this summer. I might have to switch it up a little bit. Kobes are still my go-to, but I’ll definitely have to be more creative. It’s not too many Kobes that I can get that he doesn’t have. I was getting all of the exclusive Kobes last year while he was out seeing that we’re the same size. Between him giving me some pairs and Nike hooking me up, my Kobe collection was looking really good. But don’t worry; Swaggy has a couple of surprises for y’all this year.

Snkrs Day: Throughout the past few years, we’ve seen the Kicks On Court race grow exponentially, and I feel that you’ve had a great impact on that. Do you view yourself as a trendsetter of players consciously making an effort to make statements with their shoes on court?

Nick Young: Of course. I definitely feel like that. I think I am very impactful in regards to that, and I set the trend for this new sneaker thing in the NBA. I don’t get a lot of credit for that, but it’s true. But the thing I want people to know most is that this comes natural for me. I wasn’t looking to start anything new. I’ve actually always been into trying different shoes out on the court, for my own excitement, for a while now. That’s just me. But you know, I credit you as well for this craze with the Kicks On Court show and daily coverage. You guys made it a thing, and you can see players really trying to flaunt their stuff because of Kicks On Court, which is crazy.

Snkrs Day: How has more players getting involved affected you?

Nick Young: You know, it’s really hard now to get whatever I want to wear on court because everyone is going for the hottest stuff. Like I said, it’s a thing now. It went from players that I know in the league looking for shoes to wear off the court to now players that I know looking for shoes to specifically wear on court.

Snkrs Day: Is there anything you don’t like about it?

Nick Young: No, not at all. I love seeing it, and I don’t think it will ever die. As long as the brands keeping making hot shoes, this will continue on. I’m always checking out what people are wearing on court. But I do hate – and hate is a strong word – when players, that I know are into shoes, just keep them in their closet to collect dust. I have a lot of friends who do that. They’re just shoes to me, so I wear them on court. I don’t care if they get messed up, and that’s how I’ve always been. I like to shine in my shoes, and I get a kick out of bringing fresh, new stuff to the court. Like with the Supreme Foams, I just stumbled upon those. My “shoe keeper” surprised me with those one morning, and I just knew that I was going to kill the game with those on court.
