Since its inception in 2004, Commonwealth has been a mainstay in street, fashion and sportswear for the DMV area and the rest of the world. They’ve been able to make a name for themselves and stay ahead of the game not only with their well-edited selection of goods and strong self-branded merchandise, but also with a portfolio of premier collaborations. This weekend, Commonwealth is releasing the “Gemini” Gel Lyte V, their latest sneaker project with ASICS. We caught up with Omar Quiambao, co-founder of Commonwealth, to discuss the inspirations and the creative process behind the “Gemini” sneaker.

Snkrs Day: How did the collaboration with ASICS come about?

Omar Quiambao: Like a majority of our collaborative efforts, it usually starts out of a dialogue between like-minded individuals with similar intentions. Sometimes, it can be as simple as an enjoyable business/working relationship and wanting to build on that, or an admiration for what each brand does in their respective field/category.

Snkrs Day: What was the process of working with ASICS like?

Omar Quiambao: The team at ASICS have been great to work with during the sampling process. For this particular project, the conversation started almost two years ago. We started off talking about which models we like and what was going on in the market at the time. I’ll usually go through my sketchbook and a list of running ideas I have in the studio. Once I figure out the directions I’d like to go with, I’ll do comps/mock ups and share them with the Commonwealth team and a few confidants to get initial feedback. After that, tech packs. At the time, the Gel Lyte III was the dominant [collaborative] model, and the Gel Lyte V wasn’t even in the market yet. We sampled a few different concepts, and in different models. They all came out looking really good, but we decided the “Gemini” was what we wanted to come out of the gate with.

Snkrs Day: Can you expand on the inspiration behind the shoe? How did you come up with the concept?

Omar Quiambao: Inspiration always comes from different things. This particular design simply started with the model being the Gel Lyte V, focusing on the “five” as the starting point, and then going on different tangents. The month of May is the fifth month and the beginning of the “Gemini” season on the astrological calendar. Gemini is Latin for twins. And when I think about ‘twins,’ I think about how they look alike at first glance, and even though come from the same two parents and show similarities, they are actually very different. Using motifs like stars and/or glow in the dark, I think is too obvious and cliche and overdone in the market place right now. Ours was a cerebral point of view, which is how we do things at Commonwealth.

Snkrs Day: Commonwealth has been around for quite some time now. How do you see this design fitting in with the overall legacy of the store/brand and its goals?

Omar Quiambao: We just started celebrating our 10-year anniversary this month. We don’t think about it too deeply as far as our ‘legacy’ is concerned. We do what we feel is natural to us. As for our design point of view, we align it with Commonwealth’s core brand values concentrating on craft, quality and style. We believe in style over fashion, substance over surface, practice over theory, and experience over information. We try to provide progressive design with exceptional standards of durability and comfort while being authentic to our counter culture.

Snkrs Day: How can people get their hands on a pair?

Omar Quiambao: The Commonwealth x ASICS “Gemini” Gel Lyte V will be available at the Commonwealth stores in VA & DC and online at www.Commonwealth-FTGG.com on Saturday, September 27, 2014.

Since its inception in 2004, Commonwealth has been a mainstay in street, fashion and sportswear for the DMV area and…

[1225481,51,1219126
1221180,199

2":"type-post
