This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

**NOTE** The Final Day took place late last week and final presentations were presented on Friday. Not that I would want to, I hate math. That’s one of the perks of being a designer. Very little math and a minimal amount of tests in college. It just takes time. You have to be able to sit in front of a computer in four hour sessions, preferably with Netflix playing on another device.

The final day at Pensole will kind of be like when Netflix asks you if you would like to continue watching. I’ve already been through the first 30 episodes of Gilmore Girls do you really think I want to stop now? We don’t want Pensole to end. An intermission might be nice, but we’re ready to learn more. Maybe we’ll be offered a position at a company. That would be the double rainbow of this whole experience.

For now we have to focus on tomorrow and the opportunities that it presents. The goal of every presentation is to tell the story of your shoe in the most compelling way possible. If we do that then we have succeeded. If that’s not good enough for the top eight then we’ll start our next project on Saturday and make it even better. If it is good enough for the top eight then we will start Sunday. Either way, we are too legit to quit and we WILL become footwear designers.

The project statement for Claudia’s stair running shoe.
The project statement for my city running shoe.
The final for Dexter’s sand running shoes.

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Less than 24 hours until presentation time. One room, filled with students from around the world, gets to expose the world to their talent. One of the most interesting things about design, and in this case specifically footwear design, is how everyone takes a different approach to arrive at a solution.

Today was filled with dry-run presentations in front of the class in the environment that we’ll be presenting tomorrow. Mock presentations, followed with feedback from the rest of the class and D’Wayne, allowed us to make a few final tweaks to our footwear presentations….

Tomorrow is the BIG day. 100+ people from within the industry, including designers, developers, bloggers and even sneaker-culture “gods,” will all be together in one room. Pensole will be imploding with so much talent and knowledge tomorrow evening. This is the World Sneaker Championship, the mecca of footwear design. It’s going down at 5:30PST/8:30EST, and will be streaming LIVE on Nicekicks YouTube channel. Check it out.

-Dale Shepard

Laptops, Wacom Tablets and renderings.
Representing.
Where it’s all going down tomorrow.

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Another full day spent in studio. In twenty-four hours, class will be over and we’ll be taking what we learned back to school, back to work, back to our own country, or staying in Portland (after a trip to Las Vegas, of course). In the meantime, we’re perfecting presentations and mock-ups and business cards and websites. I don’t know if any of us expected the opportunities we’ve had here, but we’re all pretty darn thankful for them.

I’m especially thankful for the mentorship and patience of the people who have come in. Never underestimate the power you have to make a positive impact on someone’s world.

Marcus practicing for tomorrow night.
Guy working on his tape up.
Maher perfecting his presentation.
Hope you tune in tomorrow!

-Beth Steenwyk

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

…and tomorrow is the big day! Whew! This week has flown by entirely too fast. I can remember the first day of class as if it was yesterday. Per usual, we kicked it off with a Bruce Lee quote this morning, “Now I see that I will never find the light unless like a candle, I am my own fuel, consuming myself.” It was a perfect quote as we wrap of the last week of class. D’Wayne reminded us that we must constantly be responsible for keeping ourselves motivated to propel forward. It has definitely been crunch time the last couple of days, but we must continue to fully carry out every detail of our project to the end. We continued to put the last minute touches on our presentation today. As previously mentioned, we have exactly three minutes to present our design from concept to final direction. We each did a practice run through and we quickly learned from one another what we could do to strengthen our presentation. Even though we have all been around each other for the last three weeks, surprisingly some of us including myself were nervous to present in front of our peers. However, we each received feedback and now we are putting the final edits on our presentation. Please tune in via live stream to watch the final presentation! We all have worked very hard and we are very much excited to share our final designs!

Quetzal editing his final presentation!

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz (CMF)

Today was the day that everything really set in! Presentations are tomorrow and PONY team feels ready and in deep anticipation for tomorrow afternoon. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous at all but my nerves have shifted from the scary kind of nervous to the more excited and ready to get it done type. Today the Color/Material designers got out presentation boards back from the print shop and we are setting them up with materials to have ready to present. I’ve also been working on my PowerPoint presentation and I am introducing the PONY brand as well as inspiration/color story so I’m working on setting the best tone possible for our team. The guys (Ruben, Marcus and Danny) have also been working on their PP presentations and shoe renders for the big day! I can truly say that this experience has helped me as a person and has also put the things that I need to work on in perspective. I feel stronger in my creative right and I feel thankful for having such supportive people like Suzette Henry and D’Wayne by everyone’s side and mine. I’m thankful to my team and the friendships I’ve made along the way and I am forever grateful for this opportunity! Hope to come back to Pensole soon. I’m ready for Vegas next week baby!

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Thursday, one day before the big day. Last day of work. We were able to finish our slideshows and practice our three minute presentations in front of our classmates. They gave me feedback about things that I should change on my presentation to make it easier to understand.

It was nice to present in front of everybody, it gives you a small glimpse of the real thing. It helped me get rid of most of my stress! We were all nervous, but at the end of the day we need to fully understand that we are presenting a four week project, we made them from scratch, we shouldn’t be nervous, we are the creators.

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

I think yesterday was the high point. From here on out it’ll be smoooooooth sailing. My presentation is locked, loaded in under three minutes. I’ve got a dope product, a solid story, and some cool sketches and renderings.

Now, I’ve just got to get to sleep (maybe get a haircut) and look super fresh tomorrow, both for my presentation as well as getting my picture taken for Sports Illustrated!!

Tomorrow’s going to be a good day and a chance to really enjoy all of the hard work and effort we’ve put in day in and day out.

We even got a chance to check out our fellow classmates projects. It’s really good to see what they have been working on, because we’ve been getting glimpses and snippets of others projects but it was really cool to get the whole story!

Kind of like how you’ve been getting snippets of my project!

Hhopefully by tomorrow you’ll have a really good idea of how everything’s gonna come together!

-Z

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang and Seth Peterson (CMF)

For the first time we entered this entrance, what did we feel? For me, this competition is so impressive but regretful. There are many people fluent in English otherwise they don’t live in a country used in English. Of course we should learn about the sketch or presentation skill, but the most important thing to create as a designer is a “communication skill,” I feel. The rest is only one day, but I’ll train these things as a life work and enjoy the presentation. –Satoshi

While my teammates are putting the final touches on their alternate views and tweaking slideshows I’m finishing up the materialization of the presentation board. With the materials we’re using, you’ve really got to get a feel for it. So for the Color and Material boards we’ve put select swatches up for you to feel. It’s exciting to see these final steps bringing everything together. We’re excited to share our project with you guys, so be sure to tune into the live feed tonight. –Seth

TEAM ADIDAS:

Now I’m just going to fix the last details for tomorrow. I’m just hoping for the best. I already feel like a winner after spending four weeks with D’Wayne and my classmates. I met wonderful people in this program and no one will take that away from me. Thanks for joining me on this adventure, I hope you liked it.
