This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

On the first day of the World Sneaker Championship, we were asked to speak in front of the class about who we are and what our strengths and weaknesses are. Over the period of the class our strengths were amplified through practice and our weaknesses were diminished through learning. Each student has a different skill set and a different way to think about things. As I have said before, separately we are good but together we are great.

I’ve learned so much over the past four weeks not only from D’Wayne but from my classmates. They truly are some of the best in the world. One class or competition at Pensole and you will skip forward light-years in your education. So much is expected of you and you are pushed to your very limit.

I think of Pensole as a rocket ship into space. It’s a fast and intense ride that ends in a life changing experience. When you come back down to earth you are never the same and all you can think about is getting back to space. The problem with leaving our atmosphere is the gravity pulling us back down to earth. At Pensole that gravity becomes self-doubt and over-thinking.

Many students including myself find ourselves over analyzing design elements and becoming too focused on what the talented designers are doing around us. Instead we must focus on ourselves. We must come back better next time, always know that there is room for improvement and focus on our strengths. Each person’s strength is another person’s weakness and if we can help each other the balance could lead to something even better than before.

The great thing about Wacom tablets and Cintiqs is that they seek to bridge the gap between strengths and weakness by offering a marker and paper experience with the added benefit of digital tools.

Team Android’s Stefan working his magic on one of the Wacom Cintiq Companions.
And here’s the Mack Daddy of all Cintiqs.

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Man, oh man. It’s hard to imagine that we are less than 48 hours away from our design presentations here at Pensole. Everything seems like a blur, but I know myself as well as all of my classmates over the past month have learned a ton of stuff. Talk about the experience of a life time; blessed to be able to be here with everyone in the class.

This is the second to last night that we are actually able to get work done, with tomorrow being a day to do dry-runs of our presentations and finish our mock/tape-ups. The clock is ticking, but myself, Stefan and Sese have worked hard to get to where we are now and our work will speak to the amount of time we’ve spent learning and understanding the brand we were assigned to design for. Let’s get it….

Weapons of choice. Our direct lateral view has to be rendered by hand…
Team Android has been putting in that work.
Team Android from left to right: Stefan, Sese and Dale

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Forty-four hours until the final presentation and I’m surprisingly calm. Maybe I’m just too tired to do anything but focus on the moment, but I’m thankful to zone in on what I need to without nerves. Another factor has to be D’Wayne challenging and drilling us for the past three and a half weeks. “Prepared” is putting it lightly. Hope you all have an awesome Wednesday night!

The view from the Burnside Bridge last night.
We used to write our names on bags so other students wouldn’t eat our food. Now we’ve fallen to this…I’m a little scared because I’m not even sure what it means, but I guess that means it’s effective!
-Beth Steenwyk

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Two days left.

It’s crazy how these weeks passed, there are only two days left before the big presentation, but our slides have to be ready tomorrow by noon, which may mean another sleepless night, all this “jazz” for the love of the game.

We are still working, doing our best to get to Friday, fresh, relaxed and 100% focused. We have learned the difference between working hard, which is good, and working smart, which is better. We are seeking the second option. We only have three minutes to present our project, three minutes to explain what happened in four weeks, three L O N G minutes and that’s it. Anyway…

Meanwhile at the hall of justice:

Sara (fabulous team Nike) “OMG I’m so tired!”
Do that work Satoshi, do that work!
Jonathan working on his digital render.

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz (CMF)

Today was the last work day of the World Sneaker Championship. It’s wild how quickly three weeks can go, a testament to how busy we’ve been in Portland. The PONY team has spent the last two days preparing their presentations along with the other teams. All three designers are busy creating unique visions for the future of PONY. The beauty of this is that competition is very friendly within the group,. Our ideas exist so far apart from each other that we’ve been able to truly collaborate on each other’s projects.

“Flare” alternate color from my Product of New York project.
Rueben working on a sketch render in Photoshop.
A flat paper model of Marcus’s shoe courtesy of E. Scott.

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Today I worked on my presentation during the whole day. It is difficult to try to put four weeks of work into a three minute slideshow. The rest of my classmates are doing the same thing, we are all just trying to be ready for the big day, Friday.

Today I had a chance to go to Nike Town. I saw a guy talking to one of the employees about the Nike Mercurials and the Tiempo cleats. Then the same guy asked the employee if the Nike Mercurial Vapor included an ACC package, and the employee said no. Then I came into the conversation, not rude at all, and told them that the employee was wrong, the Vapor’s include an ACC package, and I also explained how the upper is built. All this information was part of the lessons that our Materials and colors instructor gave us a couple weeks ago. It was fun to use the information that we learned at Pensole to inform others about the products that they want to buy. I have to mention that whenever the guy who was asking questions about cleats left, he thanked me for explaining him how the material worked.

Today we talked to our Materials and Colors instructor about final design details.
That’s my rendering with my final materials, two different types of canvas and suede.
Jared, Shaun and Stefan getting some rest. Sweet people.

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

HOOOOOOOOOOOOMEEE STRETCH!!!

Things are getting crazy!!!

All-nighters, no sleep and all red bulls!

It’s pre-presentation day tomorrow. We’re all trying to get our presentations ready for our first round of practicing tomorrow.

I think my stuff is pretty dope at this point, but I know it could be much doper if I get another hour or so of sleep.

I’m not gonna lie to you, it IS tough… but there is nowhere else in the world I’d rather be right now. *tear*

But I mean if you think about it, why NOT try your hardest? Over 100 sneaker industry professionals plus tons of people watching online?

Let me just say this…

If you HAVE a best?

Now’s the time to show it!

Hmm…

I think I just motivated myself to get back to work!!

LET’S GET IT!!

def keep a look out for our presentations THIS FRIDAY!!!

-Z

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang and Seth Peterson (CMF)

Today has been such a busy day in preparation for our presentations on Friday. The culmination of the past three weeks is all coming to a head in two days! I’ve had three hours of sleep in the past 48 hours and I literally have been running on Red Bulls and Monster energy drinks all week. This feels like finals week all over again for me. I’m really excited about Friday, but also somewhat nervous because I have so much still to do tonight and tomorrow morning. No rest for the weary. –Jonathan Guisbert

A couple snippets from my presentation above. I’m really looking forward to talking about women’s basketball and even more so to hear feedback from professionals in the industry. I’ve done so much research on the topic that it makes me feel really confident about my design and that is something that’s easing the stress of Friday. –Jonathan Guisbert

For our final presentation this Friday, we prepared visuals to communicate our concepts. Almost all students have some digital rendering skills. Everyone is glued to their seats, concentrated on their work all day long. Sometimes, if I have a problem with some rendering techniques, I can look to other students for help. Fortunately, there are many helpful people so I can get any problem resolved quickly. –Satoshi Sutoh

Almost finish the rendering, next will be preparing the presentation. –Ako Xiang

Nicekicks.com will be live broadcasting the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship tomorrow! Tune in at 5:30 EDT.

TEAM ADIDAS

I’d recommend trying to see at least a little bit. I’ve been around these concepts all month but they really pulled together in the last week, so you’d be in for a treat!

TEAM NIKE
