This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

TEAM ADIDAS

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

Life is filled with pressure. Pensole is no different, in fact it is an amplified version of life. You put 30 students together for four weeks, make it a competition, add in their heroes to judge and you’ve just turned the volume past eleven. It’s like a reality television show where it starts out nice and slow, then eventually the stress gets to everyone and things start to unravel. Now I’m not saying anyone is flying off the hinges but there is definitely a sense of urgency and pressure.

That pressure comes from all angles and begins with the pressure to make D’Wayne proud. He has invited us into what feels like his home, provided us everything we need, and most importantly given us his knowledge. The only way to thank someone for deeds of this magnitude is to listen, work hard and transfer that knowledge to someone else in need.

In my life so far I’ve had an abundance of help from many great people and the only way I know how to thank them is to become what I promised I would, a footwear designer. I plan to do just that and then when I have achieved what I set out to in the footwear world I will pass everything I know to the next generation of designers. Designers can’t just make products anymore, they have change lives in a positive way.

The only way to deal with all of the pressure is to take it in, absorb it and polish it into a diamond. That diamond represents the knowledge and experience that will be passed on to someone else so that we are always moving forward. We must translate the past through the prism of the future.

Our team getting a valuable lesson in materials and the importance of clear visual communication.
Claudia put her excessive sack of markers to work and rendered out he stair climbing shoe.
And here’s Dexter’s laboratory of sand runners.

TEAM ANDROID HOMME

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

It’s hard to imagine how fast the past three and a half weeks have gone by, only to be sitting here during the final week of Pensole working tediously on our final presentations. It seems like we had all just touched down in PDX and were taking the MAX line down to Pensole for Day 1.

The window to Friday is quickly shrinking, so there is no time to waste. It’s crunch time. This is no joke; it’s one thing to be working all day and all night, however, it means nothing if that time was wasted being non-productive; something Dwayne has emphasized since our first day. Waste no time.

.

Till next time.

-Dale Shepard

@_dalesc

Adventures to Compound during lunch looking for potential inspiration.
An overview of my project so far….
An event at Gallery135 in PDX myself and a bunch of Pensole classmates attended to enjoy the vibe and network.

TEAM JORDAN

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Have you ever heard the saying time flies like an arrow and fruit flies like a banana?

Time was flying today but little interruptions, like our regular Max line being out of order, kept the day interesting and our eyes open. It’s crazy to be so close to the end, a time when the awesomeness of the opportunity is so apparent. During a walk today, I was thinking about what I would do differently if I did the class over, knowing what I know now.

One suggestion I have, if you ever get the chance to come to Pensole, write a list of the things you want to learn before you even arrive. Own your education, own your experiences. If you are still in school, list your goals, who you want to meet, the kinds of projects you want to do, the skills you want to leave with. The easiest way to waste time is to not be purposeful with it.

Three days. To be filled with designers and posters and dreams on the line.
Rest for the weary.
Behind the scenes of a last minute photo shoot…what happens when you realize a photo for your presentation has a million watermarks streaked across it.

Make it count, guys.

-Beth Steenwyk

TEAM NIKE

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

It’s exactly three days away from the World Sneaker Championship Presentation! We are all excited, nervous, and anxious! It’s crazy how fast this experience has gone by! I don’t want it to end, it’s almost bittersweet. Everything D’Wayne has taught us for the last three weeks has prepared us for this very moment, including the Bruce Lee quotes! Today, we worked on our final presentations for this upcoming Friday! We each have three minutes to present our final design concept to a panel of nine judges via power point. However, we can do anything we want during those three minutes. It’s almost as if three minutes is a “long-short” time to precisely articulate our design and to explain our design process including the problem, solution, inspiration and story. We also had the opportunity to finalize our materials with Suzette. It is so great to see our final designs come full circle from the initial process sketches now to full renderings with colorways thanks to our CMFs!

CMFs finalizing colorways and materials with Suzette!
Oh yeah, that “long-short” three minutes that we have will be clocked on this timer during our presentation!
Zia working hard on his final presentation!

TEAM PONY

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz (CMF)

In three days it’s time for the final presentation. It’s crazy how fast time flies, especially when you are having fun. This Pensole experience is fun, a whole lot of work, but everyone is loving what they are doing.

Our boards are done and have been sent to print, now it’s time to work on the presentation. We need to decide what content should be included and figure out what we are going to say. I’m feeling quite good about the opportunity to present our work in front of important people. I like talking, especially if I’m showing something that I’m proud to present. Hopefully the language will not be a problem, I just have to practice so the flow is good.

We have three minutes to present what we have been working on for three weeks. That’s a short amount of time, but at the same time, quite long. I spent my day figuring out what to say during my presentation. I know which parts I want to highlight, but it’s tricky to get everything to work together in the correct amount of time. You should talk long enough to explain the project, but use shorter explanations to get the point across.

It’s all about balance and timing right now, we need to get everything done by noon Thursday.

I guess this is my final blog post as well, since we’re done on Friday and after me it’s the other guy’s turn to blog. Hopefully, you have all enjoyed my post on this blog, and it’s been really fun to share my thoughts and showcase my work. Wish me luck on Friday!

Keep it real guys.

– Ruben Eriksson

Suzette brought us some mac and cheese, we need that extra energy.
Doing additional views for the presentation.
A rough presentation layout.

TEAM TARGET

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Today we started working on our Power Point presentations for Friday. We have to assemble it in a way that it will help explain our designs in a much easier way, other than just talking about it with no visuals. It should be straight to the point and easy to understand. I also have to mention that we will only have three minutes to present our design, this means that we can’t have a long and complicated slideshow.

Now that Tuesday is gone, we only have two more work days. I’m aiming to finish all the deliverables by Thursday at noon. This will give me time to practice my three-minute speech for Friday. This Power Point presentation can be the key to see who will win or not, because you might have the best design ever, but if you don’t have a good presentation, yours audience will not understand your design. The best part of this process is watching everybody helping each other. We all want to be the champion, but we still try to help each other. We all started as 30 kids who didn’t know each other (most of us didn’t know each other), but we grew into a big group of friends. It’s awesome to see that no matter where you are from, the person right next to you will give you a hand when you need it. Pensole does not only build great designers, it also creates families. And this families include all the people that come into the studio to see our work or to give us advices. I’m truly grateful for opportunity of being part of this family.

Messy desk, busy desk.
These are my final colored pencil drawings.
The wall shows the design evolution.

TEAM UNDFTD

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

What’s up world!!

Sorry I’ve been out of the lime light for a little bit…this project is STRESSSING me out!! Pulled an alll nighter putting together a dope presentation board for this Friday’s final presentation. But we’re not done yet!

Things will most likely kick into high gear as DE will more than likely have us work on Tech Packs as well as final presentations (both do insanely soon)

I think I’ve got a pretty dope story and a cool-looking functional shoe that links up with Undefeated’s lifestyle, but at this point it’s all about mixing it together in a seamless, easy to follow presentation.

Which WOULD be easy enough if it wasn’t for the fact that we’ve gotta start working on these tech packs!!!

oh well…

# designn life.

(Things are about to get real)

*stay locked.

-Z

TEAM UNDER ARMOUR:

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang, and Seth Peterson (CMF)

Today we’ve been starting to think about our presentation which is coming up on Friday. What I realized today is that the past three weeks of work will all be told in a jam packed three minute session. This really makes me appreciate how much work goes into a sneaker, but all people normally see is the end product. What’s even crazier is that the consumer evaluates product in even less time than we have to present, probably 30 seconds or less. I think going forward, I’ll always appreciate footwear A LOT more!

Just finished selecting materials. Now I need to work on the rendering, this will help to bring the materials to life. Gotta go for it tonight, it’s going to be a long night! – Ako Xiang

A look at my wall close to complete. I’m feeling really good about my concept and final direction, but I won’t put that up until I’m completely finished with the render! I’m going to be up quite a while tonight rendering my concepts and preparing my presentation. I’m not even nervous yet, but that’s probably because there’s a huge mountain of work getting in the way of Friday’s upcoming presentation. I’m excited though and hope everything ties in well for my three minutes of shine. – Jonathan Guisbert

This evening we talked to Suzette (CMF director). This was our first conversation with Suzette as a team. In this time, we talked about materials, colorways and details about the construction. This gave us some feedback and inspiration on how to move forward with our presentations. Our presentation is on Friday and will last three minutes so we have to think of the best way to explain our work in that time. –Satoshi Sutoh
