This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

Remember how I talked about days when ideas are hard to get out? Well today was one of those days. When you get closer to the end of a design you have to start thinking about the little details. Where to take out material for flex, where to add material for protection and where to curve and change elements to make it more visually appealing. This wouldn’t even be the last steps when actually designing shoes for a company. That’s when the real trouble starts because then you have to start making samples and going to marketing meetings and make sure that the integrity of your design stands up to the corporate structure. There are many people involved in the process and they all want to leave their mark on the shoe. How do you navigate that windy road and keep the design ultimately yours? A shoe design is your baby and you’re not going to let anyone else teach them any bad words. It’s not a perfect analogy but you know what I mean. I’m not sure how I would handle that situation but hopefully I will land a job and find out soon.

Here are my designer essentials.

#1 a TEDx Portland backpack courtesy of Pensole.
#2 your laptop with all the fancy programs. Not to mention any stickers you can find, including a metallic beard sticker.
#3 Coffee to keep you awake and all the fancy sketching tools money can buy.

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

The last couple days have been a little busier than usual. It was great talking to Javier (Android’s creator and designer) two days ago, this gave us the final push towards the last week before the presentation. Also, today was the first day that DE critiqued and commented on our designs, which means that we are on the next stage of the process. Our daily talk with DE was longer than the last two days, we covered a few of his memories at Nike and Jordan. Classic DE.

Oh by the way, someone came in late today. He thinks nobody noticed but I did. He owes 100 push ups…

Sara and Gui taking a little break. This will be a common scene for the next 8 days.
Ako didn’t even make it to the couch… HA!
That’s enough for the night. I can go back to work on my latest concept. We are down to one design for tomorrow which will be our last approach to the “final” concept. Also, tomorrow (Friday 8th) Javier Laval (Android’s Mastermind) will come to meet with our team. I am excited to see what he thinks about our work and to hear all his story.

Sese IH

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Some days, you just get a lot done.

Like today!

Between making a to-do list (D’Wayne’s daily suggestion to us. (Hint: it works)) and waking up earlier than normal, I’ve gotten so much done. Good thing, too, since our final design is due Saturday.

For now, here’s some of my mock-up process. The most important thing I learned in school this past year was to move ideas from the cloud/idea stage into physical representations so that facts, not theory, is the foundation.

Inspiration / Validation. If you ever come across a concrete section on the corner of a sidewalk and you’re wearing thin soled shoes, try walking in place. It feels kind of like a foot massage and will increase blood flow in your feet!
First tape up! Sketches can lie to you and tape ups allow you to understand a shoe’s true pattern and lines.
Different massaging patterns for different people. There’s a lot of variation, but the different densities will be covered in EVA or another foam in the sole of my concept. I think that will help, but there’s only one way to find out…more testing and more asking my classmates to walk around with rocks and paper taped to their socks. (If you’re a designer, this is another reason to have good friends!)

-Beth Steenwyk

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi, and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

“It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential”. This is the third week and the days have gone quickly. It has become usual for some of us to sleep for three or four hours. But we have to listen to D’Wayne’s words, “it is all about timing.”

We are getting closer to our final direction, which basically means models, tech packs, pencil and marker renders, choosing colors and materials, preparing our presentations, etc. This list is just a small version of the whole thing, in other words, that was just a small taste of this process. Next week is going to be awesome, BELIEVE ME!

Beth is already testing her concept using the whole Team Target as guinea pigs. Smart! Right? She is also making a model of one of her concept designs.
Beth (Team Jordan) building her model
Today D’Wayne spent some time to answer questions, share ideas, correct sketches proportions and spread the knowledge around studio.

Danny (Team PONY) & D’Wayne
As every Friday, we are going to be visited by professionals from the sneaker industry. This means that we need to prepare to show our best in order to receive good feedback from them. Stay tuned to find out what’s going to happen tomorrow.

PENSOLEWSC . TEAM NIKE . QUETZAL . MEXICO

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Today I was able to choose my design’s final direction. I’m aiming to produce a shoe inspired by origami. It should be capable of transforming from a high top to a low top and it can also display different surface combinations.

This shoe is also designed to be personalized, the consumer would be able to paint or draw on the shoe’s surface as they please. Now that I have a direction, I have to work on the shoe’s details. I’m hoping to finalize my design by this coming Sunday.

After a long day at studio, I went to see an art gallery with some of my studio classmates. We saw some interesting art pieces there. I enjoyed the fact that most of the art pieces were inspired by the hip-hop culture. It was fun to see so many people enjoying the gallery. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stay for too long because I had to go back to work.

These are the low fidelity models I used to explain my concepts. They might be simple, but they help when you are trying to show movement on your designs.
This is my wall, it shows my progress form the beginning of the program until today.
These are some of my classmates at the art gallery.

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Hi, my name is Clifford Charles and I am representing for Haiti here at Pensole for the World Sneaker Championship. I am designing a lifestyle parkour shoe for an Undefeated collaboration with Christopher Reaburn. This is the third week and I’m now finalizing to a final concept. So far it’s been so good and I’m looking forward for tomorrow and a final design!

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang, and Set Peterson (CMF)

Today I learned that it’s always good to take a step away from your work and think about the overall story, especially after sketching for quite a few hours. I sketched a lot today, and thought I was pretty refined with my sketch, but then I took a break and got some feedback from others and realized I had departed too much from my original story…sigh. Oh well, tomorrow is another day and there will be some more adjustments to be made.

While I took my break and de-stressed, I went to go check out the local art scene at Gallery 135. Every first and last Thursday of the month, Portland art galleries open up to the public and host viewing parties for local artists. It was great to see the artistic energy of PDX and how much appreciation people have for local talent. Above are two of the pieces that really caught my eye tonight. –Jonathan Guisbert

Some sketches that I thought were pretty close to refined. I definitely am going to have to make some adjustments to this tonight and tomorrow morning. It’s the never ending battle I have between being analytical and detailed versus keeping my design simplistic, yet effective. Another long night I’m afraid, but I guess it’s best that I change this now than later this week when we’re sending our concepts to print on presentation boards! –Jonathan Guisbert

TEAM ADIDAS
