This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

TEAM ADIDAS

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

Design is on a timeline but ideas aren’t. Today, I spent the whole day sketching different versions of a concept, trying to figure out what’s missing. I even looked into a poster of past innovative Adidas products to find common design elements. I made some progress but then D’Wayne told me to try something I didn’t want to do. I thought it might be more functional but didn’t look better to me. I did it anyways just to see. The designs faced mixed reviews. Then I tried combining the two and I found that great idea. It is more functional, visually interesting and fits perfectly within the story. What more could you ask for? We will need final designs soon so my next task is to focus on the details that will elevate the shoe into something that can be made into an actual product.

I’ve been told that recruiters and representatives from Nike and Adidas will be visiting in the near future. This will help us get a feel for what exactly the companies are looking for in a candidate and then it is on us to provide them with that content. This particularly interested me because I am in search of a job. I moved to Portland to be near the companies and I want to start living my dream. Being at Pensole is the closest thing to that dream at the moment but hopefully soon I will be employed by a footwear company. The time is now for me to take the opportunities that the World Sneaker Championship has brought me and turn them into success.

So Red Bull restocked us on more flavors than I knew they had. We’ll need these next week. Thanks Red Bull!
Wilson Smith, a 30-year Nike vet, stopped by for a short visit. I’m sure the legend will return to give us feedback.

TEAM ANDROID HOMME

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard, Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

By the end of today, we must have our concepts refined down to two ideas. I spent my morning editing my brief, sketching, researching and drinking tea. My workspace has become a semi-controlled mess at the moment.

“Never trust a clean studio”

After getting jiu-jitsu’ed by Gui, Sese went back on his computer grind. For me, it is always interesting to see how other people work and stay motivated.

Sese pinning onto his super-secret inspiration board.

Later in the day, Pensole veteran and 17-year-old design guru, Ian Black, rolled through the spot. It was awesome to get caught up, goof off for a bit, and sit down and sketch together. Thanks to his fresh perspective on my project, we were able to find a great direction for my final project.

Ian, If you are reading this we think that Beth took your glasses so you will come back.

At the end of the day, Nike Legend, and UO Professor Wilson Smith stopped by to give me a much-needed critique on my project. I have been fortunate to have wonderful mentors throughout my design education. Having their continued support has made the World Sneaker Championship an even more rewarding experience.

Wilson helping me connect the pieces of the puzzle.

I’m feeling good with where I am at in the design process, but now it’s time to head home for a quick nap.

TEAM JORDAN

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve always been decent at time management. I have always been the girl to turn things in early for extra credit. I was homeschooled up until tenth grade and in my world, being efficient meant more time for things I actually wanted to do.

I’m also a perfectionist. I try to involve myself only with things I love. Like design. And sleep. Those, constantly warring though they may be, are my some of my favorite things.

That’s why the Bruce Lee quote of the day really hit home, “If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you will never get it done.”

Overthinking. Six and a half hours of sleep in four days and that was the cause. Understanding the opportunity of Pensole is great. Not putting lead down on paper because I’m waiting for the perfect idea? Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad…

10 Tips on How Not To Overthink? I don’t have them. But if I had to give one, it would be to allow yourself the possibility of failure and the opportunity to learn from mistakes.

Time to stop overthinking this blog post…Here’s some pictures. 😉

“Encouragement” from a friend. Ooh! Tip #2: Keep good friends around, they help you avoid this scenario.

The Team Jordan wall!
Moving from paper to…well, another sort of paper.

-Beth Steenwyk

TEAM NIKE

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi, and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

“If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done” – Bruce Lee

As we continue to get down to the wire, I know for myself personally we start to obsess over little details or figuring out how it’s all going to come together. However, often as designers we overcomplicate our ideas and we can never get to the solution fast enough. Today, we continued to further develop our designs and narrow it down to two concepts, as we have to have our final hand rendering by Friday. We also had the pleasure of meeting Wilson Smith, a design Director at Nike. It was a pleasure meeting him and hearing his feedback! Check out the pictures below!

Wilson Smith sharing feedback with Sese!

TEAM PONY

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz (CMF)

The guys are narrowing down in order to pick their final design and my team and I have met with Suzette to start talking materials for the designs. We seem to be on the same page with everything and personally I can’t wait to see the final product but patience is a virtue! My time at Pensole as CMF has been sort of like a rollercoaster. Some days I feel confident in myself and the direction I am taking, while other days, I feel stressed out. I know that this is all a natural way of feeling in a creative process so I try not to take it too much to heart. As of today I am feeling fine about everything and I think my team and I have a strong foundation because we communicate so well. I enjoy meeting with my designers and seeing how far they’ve come. I can say that I have taken so much from this experience so far and I look forward to the days left to soak up as much as possible before our time ends. Lots to do so until next time!

TEAM TARGET

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Sometimes you need to go 3D when 2D can’t show what’s on your mind. Yesterday, my friend Quetzal taught me how to make a last using gummed paper tape. This paper tape becomes sticky when you apply water over it, but it is also harder than normal tape when it dries up. We applied it over a shoe last and let it sit until it dried and became strong enough to hold the shape of the shoe last. Then we delaminated the paper tape out of the shoe last and joined the paper tape pieces to create a shoe last made out of paper.

Today, I used the paper shoe lasts as a base to work on some of my origami concepts I needed to work on a 3D perspective because it was challenging to show my origami concepts on a 2D drawing. Working with these lasts helped me show movement and folds on my design. I have to mention that it was a lot of fun to learn how to make a paper shoe last and also working with the low fidelity prototypes. Sometimes making drawings is not enough on this kind of process. I am aiming to have a final design by the end of this week.

Delaminating half of my second paper tape last.
Making paper prototypes for validation.
That’s me testing one of my prototypes.

TEAM UNDFTD

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Aughh!!!! Design block!!

I don’t know whether it’s the fact that we’re getting close to picking our final designs or the fact that I’ve been driving around all day looking for some cool hardware for my shoe but MAAAAN!

I am not happy with ANNNY of my sketches today, and I’ve been going suuuuuper hard!!!

Frustrating!

well whatever we’ll see what happens, I just had a hand full of M&Ms and some people in class put on some weird techno music… maybe I’ll try to vibe to that..

Actually I’ll prolly just throw my headphones in.

Either way, I’ve got to have my stuff narrowed down to two final possibilities tomorrow!

I’m half hyped and half frustrated but we’ll see how it goes!!!

Holler at you guys w/ more details tomorrow!!!!

Peace!

TEAM UNDER ARMOUR

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang and Set Peterson (CMF)

It’s 11:34pm right now as I’m sitting writing this blog, one red bull deep, and about two hours of work left to do. Not that I’m complaining or anything, I’m actually having fun right now, although I know I’m going to feel not so great in the morning. Today has been all about refining concepts and figuring out how our ideas will work, or if they will work. Below I’ll go through one of the main pieces I’m investigating, having to do with ankle and heel support. For tomorrow, we’ll be narrowed down to two concepts, and I’m feeling pretty good about mine, although now I just have to get them on to paper. –Jonathan Guisbert

After doing my first exploration sketch, I thought I had the TPU molded ankle support/heel clip down. But after talking to Craig, a 30-year veteran footwear engineer, I realized there were some kinks that needed to be worked out. Next step was moving onto the clay molded piece which is in red. That was fun because I hadn’t worked with clay since like 4th grade. But it was also cool because I was able to really see every curve that was needed to make this thing work for the ankle and not against it. Then I took the mold and used that to create my second exploratory sketch, to see how it would fit with the rest of the shoe. I think I’m heading in the right direction, next I just need to sketch the actual concept upper and tooling, and consider how I’ll tell the interior story on the outside of the shoe. –Jonathan Guisbert

From inspiration to shape: The work today is difficult. Any work put out yesterday was not good so I had to sketch thumbnails again to get the better one. Saturated situations like today are very severe for me. But, I tried to do that with positive feelings because the new, better ideas always waited for me over there.

In the afternoon, I made the model and took the simulation. Ideas translatable into reality are very persuasive. In the end, I was trying to make the different way to tighten the upper until the time to go back to our hotel. Maybe that situation gave us special concentration. I had a satisfying day. –Satoshi Sutoh
