This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

So, we have been getting a lot feedback on our designs lately and it’s hard to sift through it all. Each person has a different view, especially if they are working in a different field than design. Their feedback is equally important but often you hear conflicting critiques. When two people say the exact opposite thing how can you choose which one is right? The answer is in the facts. It is our responsibility as designers to follow facts and seek the truth. Each design element must be rooted in fact. Then, by association, designers can be equated to superman. Okay, that’s a stretch, but you know what I mean. Superman must always tell the truth and strive to make the world a better place. We as designers must seek the facts and use them to make not just products but better products. D’Wayne is the father of all super-designers because he is an expert in weeding out lies. If you try to explain something without the facts to back it up then he’ll let you know. This comes in handy when dealing with multiple opinions. He easily separates things that cannot be rooted in facts and makes everything clear. If you ever get a chance to meet him make sure you listen to every word he says. You’ll be much wiser for it. Now I must continue with my super-friends and search for the facts.

Johnny being photographed by the Sports Illustrated photographer while I’m getting critiques from D’Wayne in the background.
Taping a last and drawing on it is a good way to understand the form in 3 dimensions.
I’m getting closer to a final design direction. We need a final design on Friday and there’s a lot of work to be done.

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

“You can do anything, but not everything.” –David Allen

It’s not the Bruce Lee quote of the day, but it’s been ringing in my head for hours. From taking on too many projects to attempting to integrate too many things into a single concept, design students often fall into this trap. We think we can, “Do a little bit of everything.” But like our Jordan training concepts, it’s better to focus on doing several things really well than to do a hundred things poorly. My particular concept requires a lot of forefoot cushioning since that’s where the foot lands and launches from when backpedaling. I’ve had to learn (and am still learning!) to focus on just a few elements and let the overall design flow from those.

From classmates to magazine photographers, someone is always taking pictures here.
Life is a little clearer for Jared now since he got new specs over the weekend! We expect a massive increase in facial recognition from this boy moving forward…
Don’t get caught up in the excess!

-Beth Steenwyk

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi, and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Ahhh, Day 13 and it’s getting down to the wire! As you know, we always recap and begin with a Bruce Lee quote. Today’s quote:

“Knowledge will give you power, but character will give you respect.”

We then discussed the progress on our designs. I can’t believe it’s already the third week of class. We each gave each other feedback on how to push and develop our concepts. As of now we have narrowed down to six concepts, however, by tomorrow we have to narrow it down to four concepts. It’s always good to hear your peers give you advice and it’s rather interesting to hear the commonalities and the differences people suggests. Time to put in work!

Working hard to narrow down our concepts!
NSW’s six current concepts before receiving feedback to narrow down to four!

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz (CMF)

The final presentation is getting closer and closer, and the workload is getting bigger and bigger. Today we have been sketching the whole day, our six concepts that we did during the weekend is supposed to turn into four concepts by tomorrow morning. More views, more details, more like the final product.

??After all the feedback from Friday and discussions with classmates and D’Wayne, it feels like my project is going in the right direction. Of course it still remains a lot of work, but the story fits my consumer and you can see parts of my inspiration, the Brooklyn Bridge, in my shoes. I’ve been really focused on the upper of my shoes and have tried to keep the soles as simple as possible. But after the talk with D’Wayne today, he thought that the sole should be inspired of the construction of the bridge, how it works and gives suspension. A tough task, but I´ve done a lot of research about bridges today and got some ideas that hopefully will work.??

That’s all for now, and by the next time it’s mine turn to blog my final concept will be ready for you guys to see. Exciting times ahead.

??- Ruben?

Andrew and Cliff overlooking each other’s project.
A view of the Team Pony workstation.
Shoe tape ups and sketches while exploring forms.

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Today I worked on new ways to make my design concept work. My classmates and I are looking forward to have a final design by the end of this week, that will give us time to work on boards and presentation during the upcoming week. This is the start of our third week in Pensole and time is one of the most important factors in this process. We need to use our time wisely and produce quality results for next week. But I can’t worry about next week yet, today is about making ideas that will lead me to my final design.

Helping each other.
Working on new ideas.

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Monday, Day 14:

It seems like there are two types of days at Pensole.

1. Days where you grind out super hard just turning out sketch after sketch after sketch trying to turn out as many ideas as you can.

2. Walking around class, talking to homies and having homies come over to your wall trying to get feedback, on where you can improve, as well as looking at other people’s stuff and letting them know where they can improve.

You’re probably thinking that day type 1 sounds tougher than 2…… Wrong!

Walking around, looking at sketches of shoes all day, talking people through how they can improve their designs, as well as trying to think through people’s feedback, trying to decide what people to listen to and what people to ignore, is a mentally exhausting ordeal!

Thankfully my classmate are awesome (mandatory suck up) and I got some super dope advice, as well as D’wayne’s two cents.

I’ve got three pretty fresh directions to go in, and I’m really excited about the possibilities!

Also I got some really insightful feedback about how to make my project simpler, more intuitive and easier to use!

Stay tuned!

Things are starting to get hyped!

-Z

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang and Set Peterson (CMF)

Today, Under Armour’s team needed to pick four designs from the six different concepts. Each design has their special qualities, so it’s hard for us to pick. But we need to challenge ourselves to make the design better. The most important things for us is to discard the false and retain the true. Keep going Under Armour team.

Seeing the design only on paper is totally different when it finally becomes a real shoe. So, I need to make a tape-up shoe to see the real face of the design. This could help me to adjust the construction.

Two weeks have passed since class has begun. Our concept sketches are sophisticated in the daily work little by little. Today, I brought the six concepts and thumbnail sketches I drew yesterday and got some feedback from the other competitors. I got some inspiration and ideas again. D’Wayne’s suggestion is very helpful for me. But in my opinion, I’m not satisfied with the structure of my work. So, I have to sketch four more attractive ideas by tomorrow morning. It’s very hard but I’ll do so for my future.

I have picked four designs and Dwayne’s feedback is really helpful. I learned a lot from him. Now the KEY is to put it to work. Tomorrow I will start on the tape-up shoes!

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard, Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

This week is decision week. Today, we started really narrowing down the directions we are going to tackle for the final presentation. We collaborated with our peers to receive feedback on our six best ideas. The tricky part here is to ensure that we find a balance amongst all the information we get. Often times, there are conflicting ideas, but it is our job to discern what will work out for us.

In order to hone in on some directions quickly, I reached out to CMF lead Marcus Taylor; he is an outstanding designer whose input I greatly value.

Sese getting the in-depth Marcus feedback for the first time.
Together as Team Android Homme, we got to connect via Skype with Javier Laval, the founder and creative mastermind behind our brand. Javier shared information about the brand’s values, where it started and where it is going. Hint: Expect big things from Android Homme soon.

The week started off on a good foot. It definitely helped that a few of us took a quick, inspirational, half-day trip to Seattle on Saturday in order to prevent any designer’s block.

Bonus Pic: Me, Sara y Claudia en la aguja del espacio #sofancy
TEAM ADIDAS
