This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

Today we took our concepts further. Sketching all day is one of the great things about being a designer. Someday we’ll get paid to do it. Unfortunately we’ve been told that sketching is only a very small part of footwear design. Either way as long as there are shoes involved, we’ll be involved. Working on ideation is a funny thing because at any moment you could be propelled forward or adversely thrown backwards in the process. Today consisted of a little bit of both for us at PENSOLE. For instance, a couple suggestions from classmates gave me great ideas but I had to go back and re-sketch many of my ideas. I guess more practice couldn’t hurt. It’s been a lot of long days but things are only going to get more exciting. We start materials tomorrow so we will all need to mentally prepare for the flood of knowledge.

The chaos of desks, sketches, samples, models and students increases with every day.
Claudia and I discussing her developments in designing a shoe for running stairs.
Designing shoes requires all kinds of feet.

Roster: Stefan Cristobal, Sese Izurieta-Herrera, Dale Shepard, Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Today’s lesson started with how we should give and receive (hopefully positive) criticism. When being negatively critiqued, do not simply accept the feedback. Instead, search for possible ways to fix your problem and try to get more detailed information. Always have confidence in your work. As the master Bruce Lee said, “As you think, so shall you become.”

We spent the majority of the morning teaming up with our classmates and exchanging turns pitching our briefs. It was interesting to see how much progress everyone has made in only a week.

The highlight of my morning was when Sese and myself sat down with a journalist from Sports Illustrated for an in-depth interview. It was fascinating to see how genuinely surprised and excited she was about our life stories and our passion for design.

After our interviews, it was back to the grind for the Robot Homies and Beth (who was surprisingly not singing in this photo).
Lunch was spent watching Zia visualize his potential victory with the first mockup of the World Sneaker Championship Belt. It took him a few minutes to figure out which way was up.
Since lunch we’ve been going hard. We have to complete eight refined sketches for tomorrow morning. Currently it’s 11:08 and three of us are still standing.

Zia, “Hey Stefan! Where did you go bro? I miss you!”
It has been a productive start to the week. With a few all-nighters in the foreseeable future, I’m willing to bet there will be some people doing pushups very soon.

-Going H.A.M.

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

As I write this, I am eating a Snickers. This bar of chocolate-y, peanut-y goodness was bestowed upon me by my ever gracious teammate, Guy, and I just want to publicly thank him and point out the importance of a good support system. In this case, our class.

“Seek out encouragers-build relationships with people who have a genuine interest in you and appreciate your commitment to your red rubber ball.” –Rules of the Red Rubber Ball, Kevin Carroll

I’m not going to lie, class is stressing me out a little. Surrounded by an enormous amount of talent, it’s easy to feel like I’m not measuring up. Good thing the Bruce Lee quote this morning was, “As you think, so shall you become.” It was a timely reminder that the attitude you take on challenges with will define the outcome.

And as I learned today, having a couple of people in your corner (with chocolate…) doesn’t hurt either.

Check out the new kicks! They fit a little big in the toe, but I’m sure I’ll grow into them.
Speaking of support system, the constructive criticism from our classmates this morning is helping to push our concepts even farther.
Guy presenting to Team Jordan and Team Android Homme.
Talk to you tomorrow and in the meantime, happy shoesday Tuesday! (If that’s not a thing…it should be.)

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi, and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

This is just getting intense. Last night some of the guys and I spent our night sharing opinions about our projects and doing sketches. I can tell that was the beginning of the day.

From right to left: Jared, Gui, Guy and Jesus at the hotel lobby.
“As you think, so shall you become.” (Bruce Lee)

After Bruce’s quote, we went all around our projects, giving and receiving feedback, explaining every sketch, every brief, inspirations, suggesting new directions, features… D’Wayne took time as well to speak one on one with everyone here.

The walls are getting covered by sketches and prints, it is really cool to see everything coming together.
D’Wayne and Zia, one on one constructive criticism.
PENSOLEWSC . TEAM NIKE . QUETZAL . MEXICO

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz (CMF)

Today marked the first critique exercise of the WSC. The morning was spent in conversation, brainstorming and reworking our directions among peers. The rest of the day was spent developing concepts based on the feedback we received. The international diversity of the group came into play in a great way this morning. While sneaker heads may covet some shoes sold only outside the US, most foreign sneaker styles largely go unnoted in the states. To get a taste of how different sneaker offerings are around the world, check out New Balance Japan or other foreign brand sites.

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF) We were also given a new assignment; we have to sketch eight more concepts inspired by eight of the best ideas from the past assignment. This will help us find a solid direction for our final design language. My group, Team Target, also met with our CMF (Shaun, Color Material Finishing). We reviewed our briefs to understand how we plan to use materials and color on our shoes. The most important topic in this meeting was the material selection because the design story should also be reflected on our material choice. The last topic in this meeting was shoe branding. We decided that we need to finish our brand identity by the end of this week; this will help our CMF understand what our designs are about and the inspiration needed for him to create color and material suggestions for our projects.

D’Wayne planning today’s lesson.
Dexter explaining his project brief and design concepts.
Team Target talking with our CMF, Shaun, about our shoe concepts.

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

D day!!! Design director D’wayne Edwards (say that five times fast) comes around the room giving his input and feedback on your designs.

This is my second time taking the Pensole class, and I’m not gonna lie to you: either I’m getting better at design, or D’wayne is taking it easy on me! (I’m going to tell myself its the latter of the two.)

He was into my story, shoe shape and performance, but recommended taking G Shock’s “impact protection” story and apply it to the shoe.

That gives me three performance elements You know what’s really interesting though? The fact that you can sit with the homies in your immediate vicinity and get their feedback day in and day out, but it’s not until you really open your design up to a cross section of people that you really get some good feedback.

There were some glaring things that I had neglected to consider in my project that random people were able to point out.

not seeing the forest from the trees type of scenario…or is it not seeing the trees from the forest
Either way, getting feedback from friends (and enemies) is a really helpful way to create a well-rounded and well thought out project. There’s no way one person can think through every detail.

In fact, if any of y’all ever have any feedback (constructive or destructive) feel free to holler at me, Andrew or Clifford!

catch you tomorrow

-Z

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang and Set Peterson (CMF) Today, we met as a Material and Color Design group to review where we’re at in our projects. There was a lot of good feedback and it’s been interesting to see each designer’s approach to their individual brands. For my approach, I’ve decided to create unique graphic applications for each of the footwear designers based on the overall color story, along with their own customers and inspiration. It’s exciting to dig deep into this storytelling and really getting to know the intricacies of what we’re talking about. –Seth Peterson

Today I did 12 different concepts. I really like the style with TPU construction tooling. I think this would help a shooting guard start fast. I will move on the detail tomorrow. – Ako Xiang

This is my project so far with some initial sketches for the bootie and upper designs. The bootie will focus on the attacking and protecting for basketball players. I still have to think about more ideas to refine my designs. – Ako Xiang

This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship.
Today we went over a class critique. We were supposed to help each other by critiquing our classmate’s design concepts. This produced a lot of great feedback that will help improve everybody’s projects. After presenting my project to a few classmates, I was able to look at my project with a new perspective. Now I’m focusing on designing a clean form, something that will give room for creativity to the costumer. I say creativity because this shoe is meant to be customizable; the consumer can paint and draw on his shoe. I want to give an opportunity to the consumer to leave his mark on the shoe, make it his own.

TEAM UNDFTD

Today we started to review some of our initial concepts by presenting our design briefs and our sketches to our team. It was a good process to go through because it helped us to flush out some of the kinks in our designs and helped to provide some clarity on areas we need to focus on for our first round of refinement. We have also been working as a team between CMF/design to think about different material applications and how that will affect how we sketch our concepts. – UA Team
