This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Claudia Lopez, Daniel Raes and Marcus Taylor (CMF)

Roster: Sese Herrera, Stefan Cristobal, Dale Shepard, Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

#MJMondays
Today went fast, after DE’s talk we went straight to sketching– we need at least 12 ideas on our walls by tomorrow morning. Also, Connie, a master in Digital Design, stopped by to talk about her job in the digital field and also talk about some construction details. Great talk, all the tips from the experience designers that come to Pensole are really useful and inspiring.

Android homies on the grind: Sese and Stefan putting their ideas on paper
That’s a wrap for the day, we’ll write a little more tomorrow. Now we gotta get back to our thing.

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Roster: Sara Jaramillo, Quetzal Ramos, Victoria Adesanmi, and Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Seven days in! Today’s Bruce Lee quote was, “We all have time to either spend or waste and it is our decision what to do with it. But once past. it is gone forever.” As we begin our ideation phase, D’Wayne discussed the importance of intentionally making everything that we do count and making sure that we are utilizing our time efficiently. We each had to come up with 12 difference concepts of our shoe for the first ideation phase.

We also had the pleasure of meeting with Nike’s best digital designer today! She discussed the current software that is used to produce 3-D models of footwear and the significance of how powerful rendering tools are in today’s industry. It was interesting to hear her share the transition of how 3-D models were first produced by clay and now through 3-D printing. Check out the pictures below!

D’wayne Edwards opens the day with a Bruce Lee quotation.
Sara working on her 12 concepts! Yes, her screen saver is part of her inspiration just in case you were wondering!

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas and Thalia Meraz

After a nice weekend full with exploration of the city and work, we are back in buisness. It felt like everybody was really excited today, because we knew that we were going to sketch the whole day. I think that almost everyone enjoys sketching, it´s the fun part of being a designer, seeing your ideas come to life on a piece of paper.

After D’Wayne told us the general information for the day, today´s event in sneaker history and a Bruce Lee quote, we got our sketching task: make 12 sketches of different concepts for your shoe. He really pushed the word different and use of imagination.

The rest of the day has been spent sketching and everyone has been working hard. 12 sketches may not sound like much, but it really is. I´m quite happy how my own sketches turned out, they showcase my thoughts and ideas really well. Hopefully D’Wayne feels the same way tomorrow.

All in all today was a good day, a perfect start of the week.

– Ruben Eriksson

Danny working on his Ideation sketches.
Marcus working hard researching. You can never research too much.
My desk filled with inspiration and exploration.

Roster: Guilherme Lemes, Jesus Garate, Jared Fiorovich and Shaun Kosoy (CMF)

Today was a drawing day. We were given a new assignment where we have to draw 12 different concepts related to our project. This starts our ideating phase of the project. At this moment, I’m trying to put any idea that comes to my mind on a piece of paper. I do this because you never know when you are going to need an old idea. Drawing my ideas is like a save button in my mind. I started the assignment by looking for inspiration related to my brief. I was looking for stuff that relates to being fast, always on the move, customization, and things that stand out of the crowd. I think those terms are the best way to describe my consumer and the way I want to describe my design.

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks and Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Finally! We get to sketch!! After carefully cultivating an inspiration board, detailed research, and carefully constructed consumer… WE GET TO SKETCH!!!

aaaaand my sketches are terrible!!!

Honestly, it’s been known to happen. With so many ideas and design themes running through my head, it’s hard to knock out the perfect design on the first day. Hopefully, over the next few days I can pair down and figure out what works, what doesn’t and how I can nail that perfect balance between retro, Undefeated, understated cool, and new school, agility-enhancing performance.

But for now, the next few days are going to be a junkyard of all kinds of crazy ideas, and unique inspirations!

So stay tuned to see all the crazy stuff we come up with!!

Roster: Satoshi Sutoh, Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang, and Set Peterson (CMF)

Today we started to sketch out a few concepts for our designs, informed by our design briefs. I had a few conversations with my CMF (colors, materials, and finishes) designer about some of my ideas and we had a good discussion about the direction I want to take Under Armour basketball. The best part of the day was finally putting pen to paper and getting some ideas down after all our research. Still lots of work to do, but I think I’m off to a good start.

Starting to investigate some silhouettes here. Really quick, loose sketches to try and figure out a simple, iconic design language. Still some work to be done, but I started to highlight a few concepts I thought could be worth investigating further.
Over the weekend, getting to know a few of the other designers in the program. We decided to go see the sights a bit in downtown Portland. Had a great time seeing the Pacific NW culture, and we even passed by 52 Limited, one of the talent agencies that came to visit us last week!
TEAM ADIDAS

Today was a day of exploration: exploration of ideas, of inspirations and of collaborative knowledge. We were tasked with sketching 12 four inch concept ideas. This may not seem like a lot, and in the grand scheme of things it’s not, but there’s more pressure here. Pressure to compete with the talent present, pressure to leave a mark, pressure to prove that you are worthy of one of the limited spots in the footwear industry. Suddenly 12 footwear sketches turned into a great task that would be daunting to any young designer. Luckily, this is a place to learn and improve so no matter what your sketches look like today, you can be sure they will look exponentially better by the end of these four weeks.

Inspiration can never be understated and working with our team CMF provides a pool of ideas for finished products in the distant future
Each sample shoe we have been provided has been picked up, turned over and spun around more times than we can count, but when the product is in our hands the spark of ideas is always near
Speaking of the spark of ideas, Red Bull has hooked us up with a supply of ideation nectar. I might add that this fridge was filled to the brim a week ago..
TEAM ANDROID HOMME

“The wall will speak for itself.”

After a wonderful Sunday exploring Portland, we were once again gathered in studio around D’Wayne, who had beat us all there and already inspected the work on the walls. His daily dose of wisdom began the same way as this post: Work will speak for itself when no one is there to explain it, and it’s crucial that the message is considered and clear. Nothing should be taped to the wall without a reason! This not only gets your idea across, but shows respect for others’ time.

Our walls are starting to fill up! Hopefully they give a clear idea of our concepts to anyone who might be walking through the Pensole studio.
Jared, team Target designer and our resident skate junkie, passed time as we waited for our train this weekend. The variety of interests and personalities represented in the group is just one awesome part of this Pensole class.
Even on the weekend, we can’t seem to get away from shoes! Visiting the Keen store here in Portland opened our eyes to another important aspect of design: how the product looks on the shelf…or how kids’ shoes look on a set of monkey bars, in Keen’s case!
TEAM NIKE

TEAM TARGET

D’Wayne was able to talk to my team today. We presented our ideas to him and he responded back with great feedback. It looks like we are going in a good direction, we just need to go deeper and find ways to make our ideas work. The three of us, team Target (Jared, Ghilherme, Jesus), are looking for ways to create campaigns that help the community with the use of our designs. Helping the community is one of Target’s biggest activities, so we believe that this is a good way to make our designs relate to it.

Working on the new assignment.
These are some of my concepts.
Claudia doing sit-ups because she was late to class.
TEAM UNDFTD
