This summer, 30 young students from all the around the world have come together in Portland, Oregon, determined to change the footwear game by embarking in the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship. Assigned to teams and representing a diverse range of brands, boutiques and major corporations across the industry, they’ve began their journey to design a product that’s ready for retail. These are their stories.

TEAM ANDROID HOMME

Roster: Dale Shepard, Sese Herrera, Stefan Cristobal, Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

Day 5 started with a brief morning session with DE. Bruce Lee quote of the day: “Make at least one definite move per day towards your goal.” Otherwise, it would only be a thought, right? Sneaker Fact of the Day: Etnies was the first brand owned by a skater, the first brand that made a skate shoe, and the first brand to sign a pro skater. Also, he gave us an insight on a few personal details that companies focus on when scouting/recruiting talent:

– Be adaptable

– Collaborative

– Problem Solver

– Humble

– Leader

D’wayne Edwards opens the day with a Bruce Lee quotation.
Talent agency 52 Limited stopped by and shared some tips and insights regarding what they can offer as an agency and how to develop a strong portfolio in order to secure a good design job.
Our team (Stefan, Sese and Dale) in their warm-up sketch session.
What happens when you are late? Clifford still owes 340 push ups.

– Sese Izurieta-Herrera

TEAM UNDEFEATED

Roster: Zia Ahmad, Clifford Charles, Andrew Parks, Lindsey Johnson (CMF)

By this point, you’ve more than likely already read about what’s happened today, but what you might now know is who everyone is. Honestly, with 30 people working in three spaces, I don’t know everyone either. But what I can do is introduce you to team Undefeated:

Our team consists of: Me (Zia), Clifford and Andrew.

I’ll start with myself. I was born and raised in San Francisco, California, and I am currently going to school at Academy Art University. I’ve loved sneakers my whole life, and have had several other jobs, but there is something about shoes that really peaks my interest, and creativity! I know I told you a little of what my project is about in the last diary, but here’s where I’m at now:

My consumer is a rugged, rough guy, looking for a cross trainer to help build his agility. What I’ve been finding a lot of inspiration from is G Shock watches, how they are light and agile, but tough and super durable. Their patent cushioning shock prevention system has the possibility to match up really well with a durable, well-cushioned cross trainer that can help build speed and agility.

Question of the day: Yo, Andrew? Did those come like that, or did you have to buy two pair?

– Zia Ahmad

What’s up? I’m Andrew, I’m 24 years old, and I’m from Cincinnati, Ohio. I’ve been into art and sneakers for the majority of my life. I spent 3 years in the DAAP program at the University of Cincinnati, where I really discovered the opportunity to mesh my passion for art/design and sneakers, and pursue a career in footwear design. I look forward to starting my own street wear brand in the near future. Pensole is giving me a new outlook on the design process, which in turn is already molding me into a more well-rounded designer.

For my project with UNDFTD I am doing a lifestyle boxing shoe, inspired by the Everlast 1910 glove, a staple in the Everlast/boxing history. UNDFTD is built on a “Sport is War” mantra, and boxing is deeply rooted in their DNA. I am telling the story of Mike Tyson’s comeback from the years 1990-1996, with a capsule collection for UNDFTD, collaborating with Everlast, the gloves Mike wore his entire career.

Andrew Parks
Clifford is a bit busy at the moment, but you’ll meet him soon enough!

– Andrew Parks

TEAM ADIDAS

Roster: Dexter Sulit, Daniel Raes, Claudia Lopez, Marcus Taylor (CMF)

Five days in! Things are moving quickly. We just finished working on our briefs, the next step today was sketching. After having a good intro this morning, we were fortunate enough to have 52 Limited, a portland based design recruitment agency, that helps with job placements for contract work. The two representatives were Lydia and Brooks, and they spoke to the class on what exactly they do, their connections with certain industries, how to approach showcasing work in your portfolio, and knowing where we want to go in terms of work. Following up with that we were able to speak with some designers in the industry, which included Pensole alumni.

Claudia focused while handling a sketching exercise.
Clifford showing us his pushup game; the result of showing up late.
D’Wayne schooling us on the proper techniques of sketching footwear, which included importance of proportion.

– Dexter Sulit

TEAM UNDER ARMOUR

Roster: Jonathan Guisbert, Ako Xiang, Satoshi Sutoh, Seth Peterson (CMF)

Day 5 already! Today was awesome because we finally put pencil to paper. Although we couldn’t start concept sketching, we did warm up sketches which were cool because it taught us how to pay attention to subtle details like the small articulated molding outlines or the little ridge where the heel meets/is glued to the midsole. There were also numerous professionals that came by such as designers from adidas, Nike, and even a professional placement agency called 52 Limited. The designers were really great to talk to and bounce ideas off of for our individual concepts. It’s crazy how young some of these guys are, just shows how much talent is coming up and how much more we have to push ourselves to be successful. Talking to 52 Limited was really great because it opened the class up to the idea of working with agencies as a major way of being discovered and gaining experience. Lots of important connections were made today, can’t wait for the next few weeks!

Warm up sketches. We were tasked to sketch one of the samples we had here in class. The idea was to sketch to improve, each one should be better than the last. This was actually pretty difficult because sometimes you get something right in one, but when you go to do the next sketch, what you had right in the previous one won’t always come out exactly the same. It was a great exercise to pay attention to details and the small nuances that are in the profile of a sneaker.
Ako Xiang was here sketching as well. He has some really interesting things going on with his design and started to work out some of his ideas on paper. He also has some really great insight about construction as he has worked with footwear production for a few years, great addition to the team.
Modern architecture is about using traditional materials in a new and simple way. One of the oldest materials around is bamboo. I think lots of people are aware of its strength properties, but it is also antimicrobial, flexible, absorbs moisture, and even gets stronger with age! I’m researching some new ways to incorporate this into footwear, along with the help of the CMF designer on the team, Seth Peterson and materials expert Suzette Henry. It’ll be interesting to see what we come up with!

TEAM NIKE

Roster: Quetzal Ramos, Sara Jaramillo, Victoria Adesanmi, Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

I can’t believe its already day five! We always begin class with an inspiration Bruce Lee quote followed by a significant event in sneaker history. Today’s quote is “Make at least on definite move daily towards your goal.” This quote is applicable as we began sketching today! D’Wayne expressed the importance of sketching to improve. Every sketch we do must be better than the previous sketch. We sketched the same style shoe 8x times to perfect our skills. Followed by this exercise, we had the privilege of meeting with two recruiters from 52 Limited – a creative and talent staff agency that place professionals in the work force. It was beneficial to hear the advantages of utilizing recruiting agencies and being open minded to taking a freelance or contract opportunities to get our foot in the door! We continued to expand our briefs and had the opportunity to meet with industry professionals and alumni Pensole students!

Quetzal and Sara working on the sketching exercise.
Victoria and Clifford meeting Cheresse for the first time and
discussing her experience as a footwear designer.

TEAM PONY

Roster: Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Thomas, Thalia Meraz (CMF)

Hey my name is Thalia Meraz and I am a part of the PONY (PRODUCT OF NEW YORK) team and I have been handling our team’s Color, Material and Fabric story for the brand. Just to give a quick recap of my experience with my team for the past week so far; once assigned groups, we met up to talk about our visions for PONY. I think we instantly clicked because prior to being assigned teams, Dwayne gave a description of what the brand was looking for and once we met for the first time to talk about PONY we all instantly felt inspired and excited to start because we were automatically on the same page and seemed to have had the same vision. On our first official meeting we mostly spoke about the direction and lifestyle we envisioned for PONY. By the second day designers Danny Chambers, Ruben Eriksson, Marcus Taylor and myself met frequently thought out the day to discuss ideas and a story for PONY. Re-Vamping the brand all while staying true to New York and the brands heritage was instantly something we all felt strong about and once that was discussed, Inspiration came rushing through. New York sceneries, colors and culture play a big part of Brand story and I separated each color and scenery story to Danny, Ruben and Marcus according to the time, mood and state of mind of the consumer throughout the day. Once I knew that this was the direction in story that I wanted to take I took a moment with each of the guys to sort of feel them out and assigned accordingly. Each story and emotion fits perfectly with each of the guys (Danny, Ruben and Marcus) It is almost as if each one was made for them and I am excited for them to get started on their shoe designs and see how it plays out once colors and materials are on the shoes. If I could describe the vibe and direction of this project in three words, they would be: Honesty, Heart and Drive.

I can’t lie I felt a little anxious taking on such responsibilities at first but once I got started I knew I was capable. It also helps having such great team members who are insanely talented and inspire me in their own way. I think we are all learning from each other and really working well as a team.

As to what I can say about my experience with PENSOLE so far is that this program is no joke! I’ve learned more in one day than I have anywhere else. Dwayne’s morning Pow Wow’s and lectures are what I really look forward to everyday. I feel like everything he says is helping me build character.

Looking forward to the days to come!

Marcus working on his sketches and Ruben in the back enjoying an icey pop.
My work space (still in progress).

– Thalia Meraz

TARGET

Roster: Jesus Garate, Guilherme Lemes, Jared Fiorovich, Shaun Kosey (CMF)

Today was day one sketch session at PENSOLE. D’Wayne told us to sketch a shoe four times on a piece of paper, and then repeat the same process on another piece of paper. The purpose of this assignment was to practice the idea of “sketch to improve”. This means that you should improve your technique as you start a new sketch. Practice makes perfect. We also had visitors from 52 LTD, Nike, Jordan and Adidas. The guys from 52 LIMITED gave us an inside look into how the process of how hiring talent for companies works. They share some advices about how to build our portfolios and presentation, and also about how to create a good foundation for our future careers. Then some designers from Nike, Jordan and Adidas entered the building. This was a great experience because they were able to critique our projects and share some ideas with us. We appreciated the most was that they also gave us advice about our future; they gave us their perspective of the shoe industry and how should we try to pursue a place in it. Currently I am working on my brief; I’m trying to establish all the details behind my concept. This will help me to have a solid direction when I start exploring design ideas.

Sketching to improve.
Students talking to some of the designers that came to visit.
Cheresse Thornhill (Nike designer) talking to the some students about her experience at Nike.

TEAM JORDAN

Roster: Elizabeth Steenwyk, Maher Jemili, Guy Perez, Tuan Nguyen (CMF)

Monday morning seems like it was months away. The past five days have been a flurry of research and note taking, something many don’t realize is a vital part of design. Today, however, we finally got to pick up our pencils again. We were given the assignment to draw a shoe from the studio as we saw it so we understand how the finished panels look when D’Wayne talks about patterns.

Guy sketching a Jordan training shoe we were given as inspiration.
D’Wayne teaches with actions, not always words. Helping Maher with his sketch game.
We make some time for fun, too…Mad yo-yoing demonstration at lunch, compliments of Seth!
