Fans of kicks and hip-hop alike consider the late ’80s and early ’90s as peak periods. From black nubuck basketball shoes to boom-bap beats, the sneakers and music that came out during that time were raw and backed by star power. Recently signed to Mass Appeal by Nas, Boldy James has the support of said era’s golden child and the kick picks to match. We caught up with Boldy James to hear his favorite sneakers these days in this installment of My 5.

Boldy James: “My favorite Jordan is the 4 in black suede. What’s crazy is that British Knights were real popular in my neighborhood back in the day. [As a kid] my birthday was coming up and I begged my mom all year for these British Knights – but she knew I liked the Jordans, too. She surprised me at my birthday party by putting a British Knights box next to my cake. I opened the British Knights box and there was a pair of Air Jordan 4s in the British Knights box! I thought that I didn’t get them, but when I went in the house the British Knights were in there, too.”

Boldy James: “Black suede Grandmamas with REACT Juice – the Larry Johnsons. My first pair I got when I was older, when I was like 21 or 22. They were on sale at this little low-key store out in the suburbs at Oakland Mall in Michigan. They’d been off the market for a long time and they were on sale for like $35. This was before people were rocking retros, before they were re-releasing all the old, classic kicks. They were just chilling in the storage room. I got a lot of compliments on those because people hadn’t seen them in so long.”

Boldy James: “I’ve got more Bo Jacksons than I’ve got Jordans. They just look dope on my feet. Any pair of Bo Jackson, as long as the color scheme is dope and not too girly…I’ll buy all of those.”

Boldy James: “The same thing was happening with the Grant Hills in Detroit that was happening with Jordans. Everybody was getting robbed at my school for the Grant Hills just as much as the Jordans. For our team, Grant Hill was the closest thing we could get to Michael Jordan. We just wanted to represent team spirit and show the hometown some love. They were fresh as hell on top of it. I didn’t get to get those when I was a kid either, so I got those when I was older.”

Boldy James: “My first pair of Barkelys were a hand-me-down from my cousin Randy. He knew I wanted them real bad and he used to get a lot of gym shoes. His pops worked in athletic leagues and was really into basketball and coaching, so he used to have the plug on gym shoes.”

Boldy James’ new single “Crunchin” is available now at iTunes.
