Tonight, Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins will formally begin their professional careers as they walk across the stage in the 2014 NBA Draft. While the two freshmen sensations lead off what’s considered a draft class deep in talent, only time will tell how this pool of players will perform on the court. As NBA execs and loyal fans hope their team’s picks produce winning records and championship rings, fans of footwear and sneaker brands are hoping this draft will produce the next wave of signature stars.

As history shows, the draft classes that run the deepest in talent usually produce the best sneaker heat. From signature shoes to player exclusives, some rookie rosters just rocked more heat over the course of their careers than others. We took the time to rank the twelve best NBA draft classes from a sneaker standpoint. Read our picks and give us you own in the comment section.

12. 1991

Key Players: Larry Johnson and Dikembe Mutombo

Grandmama and the finger waving shot swatter may not have the deepest sneaker catalogs in history, but their impact on basketball footwear is for real. Both Johnson and Mutombo helped modernize the hardwood direction of their respective sponsors. LJ ushered in the era of REACT Juice for Converse, dressing up in drag in commercials and dunking on opponents in games (a little different than Magic and Bird’s Weapon ads or highlight reels.) Mutombo became an international endorser for adidas, bringing Congo colorways and high-top hype to the Three Stripes’ otherwise clean and classic history of hoops.

11. 2009

Key Players: Stephen Curry, DeMar DeRozan, Brandon Jennings, James Harden, Blake Griffin and Ty Lawson

Slept on in a sneaker sense, the 2009 NBA Draft has made waves on the market. Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings and Blake Griffin all serve as marquee faces for their respective basketball brands, while DeMar DeRozan and Ty Lawson represent a new era of starters that fill up stat sheets and the pages of Kicks On Court.

10. 1987

Key Players: Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, Kevin Johnson and Reggie Miller

The 1987 NBA Draft had star power and staying power, both on the court and on the shelves. Top pick David Robinson became a star in San Antonio after serving in the Navy, winning rings and grabbing double-doubles in the best from the Nike Force Camp. Scottie Pippen flourished in Chicago, collecting trophies with MJ in memorable models from Nike, including some of his own signatures. Explosive point guard Kevin Johnson would become an endorser for Converse, while silky shooter Reggie Miller would come through in the clutch in sleek Nikes and PE Jordans.

9. 1995

Key Players: Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse and Michael Finley

In 1995, Kevin Garnett made headlines by exploding into the NBA Draft Lottery as only a high school student. Da Kid proved to be Da Man, redefining the power forward position and picking up NBA hardware along the way. KG kicked off his career in Nikes, sporting Uptempos, Flightposites and even a few signatures before wearing shoes of his namesake from AND1, adidas and Anta. Despite debuting in the NBA 13 years after the shoe first released, Rasheed Wallace became the face of the Air Force 1 by rocking the highs on the reg everywhere he played. Jerry Stackhouse became a key endorser for Fila, while Michael Finley set the tone for the early era of Team Jordan athletes.

8. 1997

Key Players: Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady

At the end of the day, the 1997 NBA Draft produced the game’s greatest power forward and also one of its best scorers. Top pick Tim Duncan started his decorated career in the most progressive models from Nike, rocking favorites from the Foamposite franchise and eventually two Swoosh signature silos of his own. He’d later get his own models at adidas, joining classmate Tracy McGrady. For the better part of the 2000s, T-Mac got buckets in six different signature shoes from the Three Stripes.

7. 1994

Key Players: Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Eddie Jones and Glenn Robinson

Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Eddie Jones and Glenn Robinson all received signature shoes as NBA athletes. Grant Hill became the face of Fila, leading the league in All-Star votes early on in his career and winning Olympic gold in Atlanta. Co-Rookie of the Year Jason Kidd tied and zipped-up futuristic Nikes, later lacing up Jordan PEs and PEAKs. Eddie Jones served as an early member of Jordan Brand, getting his own signature models and also backing team favorites. The Big Dog rocked with Reebok in his early days, with his Rail model recently receiving the retro treatment.

6. 1990

Key Players: Dee Brown, Gary Payton and Derrick Coleman

Retro releases are built on nostalgia, and nostalgia is built on memories. Dee Brown won’t be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, but he sure has cemented himself in sneaker history. Brown’s endorsement of the Reebok Pump line in the 1991 Slam Dunk Contest put the technology on the map and still sells sneakers today. On the other side of the map, Gary Payton was writing a roundball resume with the best of them in Seattle, doing so in the top shoes from the Nike Flight Camp and eventually his own signature line. #1 pick Derrick Coleman also contributed to this class, hitting the hardwood in the first basketball shoes from British Knights.

5. 2007

Key Players: Kevin Durant and Nick Young

Play and personality both sell shoes. While Kevin Durant went #2 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft, the humble hero has quickly risen in the ranks of the best in basketball and footwear. Support for the Nike KD line has only gotten stronger throughout Durant’s still young career, getting wear from peers and fans alike. Nick Young’s lack of a signature shoe has only made him more of a star, allowing the man we know and love as Swaggy P to lace up anything and everything on the NBA hardwood.

4. 1993

Key Players: Chris Webber and Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway

On draft night in 1993, Chris Webber and Anfernee Hardaway switched hats and teams in a move that shaped the sneaker culture forever. While both would sign with Nike, C Webb would swap brands and teams over the course of his career, later lacing up signatures from the likes of FILA and DaDa in DC and Sac-Town to the tune of numerous All-Star bids. The point guard called “Penny” would make magic with Eric Avar during the height of his playing days, donning some of the most celebrated signature and non-signature shoes Nike Basketball has ever put out.

3. 2003

Key Players: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony

Will LeBron’s legacy on court and on feet surpass that of Michael Jordan? It’s a tall order, but he’s already all but claimed the #2 spot in both categories. With 11 signature shoes under his belt, King James has a deep footwear resume with Nike, and the basketball accolades to back it. Teammate Dwyane Wade has remained relevant on the hardwood and on the shelves over the years, winning rings and getting All-Stars nods in signatures from Converse, Jordan Brand and Li-Ning. Carmelo Anthony serves as the longest active signature hooper from Jordan Brand, boasting a ten-silo series and loads of PE heat.

2. 1996

Key Players: Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Stephon Marbury, Steve Nash

The 1996 NBA Draft introduced the world to a wave of young talent that would dominate the NBA for a majority of the 2000s. Allen Iverson became the face of a generation and the feet of Reebok, winning Rookie of the Year and MVP honors over the course of his career in one of the longest signature lines ever created. Kobe Bryant would contend with legends past and present for his place in the hoops hierarchy, doing so in some of the most progressive models from adidas and later Nike – also rocking a host of heat between sponsorships. Stephon Marbury dazzled fans as the first endorser of AND1 in his early days, eventually wearing Nikes and later launching his own Stabury line. Ray Allen resides as the game’s 3-point king and Jordan Brand’s PE champ, while the likes of Steve Nash and Jermaine O’Neal served as early endorsers of low-top hoop shoes and Nike Shox, respectively.

1. 1984

Key Players: Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon

The 1984 NBA Draft Class was deep and decorated enough to get its own TV special. The class birthed the greatest basketball player to ever play the game and the greatest signature sneaker line to ever hit stores. While Michael Jordan’s footwear legacy could compete on its own, Hakeem Olajwon and Charles Barkley add acclaim to MJ’s accolades. Olajuwon endorsed everything from Etonic to LA Gear, eventually bringing signature sneakers to the economy price point with Spalding. Charles Barkley sits right next to MJ as one of the most important Nike athletes ever, championing the Force camp and his own CB series.
