The term ‘golden era’ gets thrown around a lot in both hip-hop and sneaker culture, but let’s just agree it’s a pretty stellar time for West Coast rap and shoe releases. Caught in the middle of both is Vince Staples. Much like his peers, Vince has an appreciation for the classics, but a sound and a style that’s far from dated. Currently on the road with ScHoolboy Q, we caught up with Vince to hear what’s in his current My 5.

Vince Staples: “Only the CDPs, not the 2012 ones. [They’re] too different. I had the CDP 4s and I got the 2012s, but they just went a different lane with it. The CDP 4s are timeless. They’re a little thinner around the ankle, a little slimmer, just a better look overall.”

Vince Staples: “Those are my everyday shoes. I was hoping nobody was going to be on them! I was hoping everyone would sleep on them so I could just snatch them up, but it didn’t happen like that. People weren’t really on for the “Orlandos” but they caught on by the “Camos” and the “Li’l Penny” colorways. Penny Hardaway is up there – nobody has a sneaker line as big as him except for Jordan.”

Vince Staples: “I had them when they still had the Jordan sign on them, when people were acting bougie (Laughs). I really want the Black/Royals, but since I couldn’t get them I had to cop the Black/Red 1s again as soon as I could get them.”

Vince Staples: “The day it came out I knew this was about to be the next one. There’s not a lot of times when you get a shoe that’s new that doesn’t look too futuristic. They’re trying to get too futuristic sometimes, because I’m not putting on no Kobe 9! They’re doing too much now. You can progress, but make it wearable. The Chukkas were something that were new and functional, but they still look nice no matter what you’re doing.”

Vince Staples: “I wore those the whole Earl (Sweatshirt) tour. The 3 is durable and it isn’t going to give up on you. The 3 and the 4 still look right even if they’re busted. They get better over time rather than some that deteriorate. The 1, the 3 and the 4 are always going to look good no matter what you’ve got on.”

Vince Staples is currently on the road with ScHoolboy Q and the Oxymoron tour.
