With the month of October serving as a 31-day reminder of the ongoing fight against breast cancer, sneaker brands have repeatedly stepped up to the plate, particularly in recent years, to bring awareness of the disease to the forefront. On the last day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2013, take a look back at ten of our favorite silhouettes that have donned panels of pink and the pink BCA ribbon in an effort to raise funds and recognition for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Originally releasing alongside the Nike LeBron 8, the Nike Air Max Zoom Soldier V features a number of design characteristics imported from its signature couterpart, including hidden Dynamic Flywire and a similar tongue and lacing system. Despite shortening the Air Max unit, the silhouette makes up for the loss with a cross ankle strap. Ultimately, the Zoom Soldier V was seen on courts everywhere. Building upon that popularity, the platform was perfect for a “Kay Yow” colorway. Making a splash in performance athletic footwear, APL (Athletic Propulsion Labs) made a bold statement in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, draping their Concept 3 silhouette in rose pink. The words “Hope” and “Cure” also chime in on the insoles of the limited edition sneakers, all sitting atop a translucent blue midsole. Taking the toned-down route, the Nike KD V “Aunt Pearl” dons an appropriate pearl white upper, incorporating the ubiquitous pink as a mosaic on the Swoosh. Pink lines the sneaker, in addition to handling the laces, tongue and outsole, keeping the overall theme in check. What’s more noteworthy is that Kevin Durant actually donned the kicks on court, in memory of his Aunt Pearl. Pushing past its predecessor in terms of design and performance, the Nike Hyperdunk 2013 outdoes the 2012 edition despite utilizing similar color blocking. The x-factor is the incorporation of black hits on the inner lining that add another source of contrast on the monochromatic scheme. Rewind the shot clock a few dozen times, and you’ll be able to recall that the adidas Pro Model 2010 was the quintessential standard issue team sneaker on the prep and collegiate level. Quite the stage to raise awareness, the BCA version of the Pro Model went above and beyond to put the race for a cure on display, bearing a predominantly pink upper, and the word “Hope” inscribed on the side. While Kobe Bryant’s return is still pending, his upcoming signature sneaker is also on hiatus. In the meantime, fans of the Nike Kobe 8 System continue to get looks at new colorways the signature. The month of October brought along the perfect opportunity for the kick to join the cause.

Nike Air Max Zoom Soldier V “Kay Yow”
