Every now and then, unfortunate things happen to great shoes. No matter how much one tries to protect a good pair of kicks, sometimes life simply happens.

Our seventh installment of Kick Chronicles features multiple members of the Snkrs Day staff discussing their most memorable sneaker mishaps – things that went wrong regarding their most beloved shoes. Check out the short stories, and share your own sneaker mishap articles below.

I learned the hard way just how fragile midsoles can be without even rocking them. I remember the day that I moved into our new offices and moved my entire collection of OG Jordans. I went into the room we refer in the office as “the vault” to grab a pair of OG Grapes to use for a photoshoot and to my horror, the midsoles were completely destroyed. Piles of dust and crumbles, the shoes were done for.

Immediately I wanted to check to see what else had died a painful death. Below is a list of DS OGs that are completely ruined due to age:

– Air Jordan V Fire Red Sadly, many Air Maxes were doomed as well. Long in the short, WEAR your shoes, appreciate every moment with them, because unlike fine wine, they don’t always get better with age.

Twitter: @MattHalfhill

Fortunately, my only sneaker mishap was a one-time learning experience. I was a young and dumb newbie in the online sneaker world, in awe of the array of options presented by Nike Talk and the Internet. I wanted the Air Jordan 4 “Tour Yellow” so badly and was ecstatic when I found someone on the buy/sell thread who would get them to me for only $150. Problem was, I was an innocent kid who trusted everyone. Like an idiot, I sent a money order to someone that I had nothing more than an e-mail address. Long story short, I’m still waiting for those shoes. At least I got a valuable life lesson out of it.

Twitter: @JHowieee/Instagram: JHowieee

The white-on-white Air Force 1 was a first-day-of-school shoe for me at the start of my freshman year of high school. I don’t remember what I wore with them that day, but I do recall getting compliments from many – until lunch happened. Midway through the day, I was in the lunch line inching closer to the front when a girl – not paying attention – ran into me and spilled her red drink all over my socks and shoes. I went from taking pride in the lower half of my outfit that day to counting down the hours till basketball practice so I could get out of my stained shoes and socks for good.

Twitter: @geokthree/Instagram: geokthree

As many of you know, Matt and I are the proud parents of four kids – all 6 and under – so we have lots and lots of baby clothes, baby shoes, anything and everything baby related. Well, one day I was trying to clear out the clutter and prepared a donation pile of baby shoes.

Aidan, our four and a half year old, was our first boy. So, everyone wanted him to be fresh like his dad and we received many generous gifts of baby sneakers. Matt bought a pair of OG Bordeaux VIIs on eBay long before we were married and we saved them for the day we would hopefully get to lace them on our baby boy.

Aidan ended up rocking those Bordeaux’s just once to an event at Snkrs Day and then they were safely (or so I thought) tucked away for safe keeping.

About six months later (before we found out we were having another boy), I was packing up old clothes and shoes to donate to Safe Place (an emergency shelter in Austin). My mom was in town and decided to help me out, and she packed up the shoes. A week later, I was in Aidan’s closet and went to move three Jordan boxes and noticed that they were incredibly light. TOO light. I opened them – EMPTY! I called my mom up and asked her if she knew where the sneakers were that were inside the boxes. Her reply, “Oh, I put them in the bag to be donated.” Well, you can’t be mad at mom when she was trying to help. I’m sure we made some toddler’s mom really happy with the OG Bordeaux VIIs, Space Jams and Oreo VIs.

Twitter: @AllisonHalfhill

My most recent sneaker mishap took place on a visit to Wisconsin to visit my sister. While in Milwaukee, we visited a local sneaker boutique, and I picked up a pair of suede Nike SB Dunk Lows for a steal. I decided to wear them the next day and almost immediately dripped pizza grease all over my right foot. I did my best to repair the damage, but you can still see the darkened area where the pizza left its mark to this day. Be careful when you eat pizza and wear your sneakers.

Twitter: @shelton_britt/Instagram: shelton_britt

I’m a member of the Iota Delta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi (@utnupes), Spring 11 Tail Klub to be exact. At the end of each school year, we host a boat party on Lake Travis. I love boat parties – I mean who doesn’t – but the preparation for the event is always a pain.

During my neo year, I was originally scheduled to pick up utensils and give rides from campus but somehow, I ended up being forced to help with burger prep. I usually don’t mind cooking, but when you have to make 300 burgers, and hotdogs in a 2-hour span, things get a bit hectic. Hectic is an understatement. It was pure chaos: three guys cooking on the stove, and eight different George Foreman grills.

Somehow after countless burns and hearing the fire alarm go off multiple times, we eventually finished cooking. By this time we were all partially inebriated and ready to turn up, but we could not leave my frat brothers apartment looking like McDonald’s after rush hour. In attempt to quickly wipe down the counter, I knocked a huge can of burger grease on to the floor. Although it didn’t directly land on me, the splatter caught the whole right shoe of my Toro Bravo 5s. I shed a few tears that day. Luckily, along came Jason Markk cleaner and I was able to clean most of it off but there are a few dark spots here and there.

Twitter: @C_White1911/Instagram: c_white1911

It was my freshman year of college, and this senior girl who I had a huge crush on told me that she was throwing a party and that I should come. The decision to go was easy, but the decision on what to wear was another story. Of course I had to be on the top of my game that night, so I put together a fresh outfit, complete with a pair of the “Sunset” Air Jordan 5s on my feet.So I roll up to the party, and everything is going according to plan. I was easily the freshest dude at the party, and my crush certainly noticed it as well. She was showing me all kinds of attention, but little did I know, her boyfriend was about to show up.

So her boyfriend shows up to the party – and I’m not sure if they had already been arguing or what – but she wasn’t showing him any love that night. Next thing you know, one of the dude’s homies “accidentally” spills red punch all over my Jordans! The white laces, the white netting on the sidewall and all of the stitching were completely stained red. The shoe was ruined! Luckily, I was able to keep my cool, and I cleaned myself off with some extra help from my crush. Overall, the night ended well, and the red stained Sunsets serve as a pleasant reminder to that fun-filled evening to this very day.

Twitter: @MikePDiddy/Instagram: mikepdiddy

**Note** Send a Kick Chronicle of your most memorable sneaker mishaps to info@snkrsday.com for a chance to be featured on the site next week.
