I was on my way to 5th grade, and my hero Michael Jordan had just claimed his second three-peat and rode off into the retirement sunset. My birthday usually falls on Labor Day right before school starts, and all I asked for that year from my entire gift-giving circle was both Bulls colorways of the new Air Jordan 14. My wonderful parents and grandparents came through and got me both pairs for my birthday the day before school started, but I couldn’t decide which pair to wear on my 5th grade debut. So, way ahead of my time, I wore one of each. Post Oak Elementary wasn’t ready.

Matt Halfhill

Nike Air Assailant in Black/White/Photo Blue

For the first day of 10th grade, I somehow convinced Momma Dukes to drop $95 for the Nike Air Assailants. Growing up, I was a big fan of Andre Agassi both on the court and his kicks. Two of my friends, Sarah Weil and Brent Knight, had the OG colorups (ones I spent 12 years chasing), so I had to switch it up. I was set with those and a photo blue Nike Tennis polo to match. FRESH.

Michael Parsley

Nike Air Force 1 “Holland”

I remember the first day of school of my junior year like it was just yesterday. I had spent the entire summer working, making money, and spending it all on sneakers. I just knew I’d be the freshest kid walking through the doors at Stony Point High School in my brand new pair of the Air Force 1 “Holland” from the World Cup Pack, and I was right. Everyone’s eyes were glued to my feet, and I swear I got asked the question, ‘Where’d you get those?’ about a million and one times.

Peter Sim

Nike Air Zoom Flight 95

My parents wouldn’t really buy me too many sneakers when I was younger, but one shoe I distinctly remember lacing up for school was the Nike Air Zoom Flight ’95 worn by Jason Kidd. I remember they were one of the most futuristic looking shoes on the rack and also one that was not as expensive as Jordans (I believe they were $95-110 retail). I loved the shoe because it was so different at the time. The bug-eye, the checker carbon fiber and the exaggerated white foam “moon boot” midsole were definitely unique and everyone had something to say about them – good and bad. It’s still a classic in my mind.

Ian Stonebrook

Reebok Shaqnosis

I’ve scanned my memory before and with exception of about three years, I can recall every first day of school outfit from third grade through high school. While I have fond and funny memories of my sartorial choices, I feel pretty good about my sneaker resume. The shoes that stand out and really kicked everything off are the Reebok Shaqnosis. After rocking with Olajuwon jerseys and kicks – thanks to my cousin Ty for the majority of second grade – Shaq became my guy moving forward and thus I had to have his signatures. My mom and sister surprised me with a pair of his striped sneakers during the summer of ‘96 down in Indiana, and they got the first-day treatment for the start of 3rd grade. That was a really important first day for me because it marked my first day at a new school (my sister and I did Montessori for kindergarten and early elementary) and a new group of friends. My Edgewood Eagles debut saw a ‘Life is Good, Basketball is Better’ tee, jean shorts and the famed sneakers. The kids on the playground used to call me ‘Zebrafeet’ which I never took as a bad thing and always embraced. I’m happy to say I was available to avoid the sophomore slump, ala Street Dreams, with the flashy Nike Zoom Flight Vs and a brash AND1 trash talk tee combo on the first day of fourth grade. Even so, my Shaqnosis debut will be the one that my family and friends will always remember.

Brittany Shelton

Nike Air Pippen I

I know I was the coolest kid in school on my first day of 6th grade. How do I know? I laced up the Nike Air Pippen I that day and many days thereafter. I even had the Scottie Pippen binder to match. #33 has always been my favorite player, and I had to have his shoe, so when my parents took my twin sister and I to the sneaker store to pick out a pair of kicks for the new school year, I grabbed the Pippens and practically never took them off. I beat a lot of boys in Bump that year, too.

Greg Watts

Jordan 6 Rings Black/Red

This may come as a surprise to all of you “OG” lovers that my most memorable first day of school shoe is the Jordan 6 Rings Black/Red. The shoe is a combination of every shoe worn when Jordan won a championship. The black patent leather upper, white midsole, and Air Jordan branding on the straps and tongue made this shoe a hot commodity in my 10th grade year of high school. My friend and I went to three different stores in the Houston Galleria just to get our hands on a pair. Of course, they were worn with khaki cargo pants and a fresh white polo shirt. The kicks made up for the dullness of our school uniform.

Cameron White

Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2k4 White/Navy

One of my most memorable first day of school sneaker moments would have to be when I rocked the white/navy Nike Huarache 2K4. This was one of my most memorable cops because I didn’t want this colorway at first. I actually searched high and low for the black and grey color-up that dropped around the same time. The black and grey 2K4s had sold out at every store in a 50-mile radius from my hometown, so I just picked up the white/navy 2K4s, along with a pair of brown suede mid AF1s. The reason I picked the Huaraches for the first day is because I wanted to keep it simple with my white tee, but ever since that day I fell in love with the comfort and style of the 2K4, causing me to pick several pairs since then.

Gabe Oshin

Nike Air Force 1 Mid White/Red

This is the first one that comes to mind, so in essence, it was the most memorable for me. These were my first pair of AF1s and my brother had worked all summer at Domino’s pizza to get them for me (he got the pair with the black stitch). I remember getting them a few weeks before school started and I kept them on ice until the first day. First day rolls around, and it’s pouring raining. I had two choices: rock with some kicks from the previous school year or step out in the new 1s regardless. At the time, it was a no-brainer, so I decided to tie up some grocery bags over my shoes. I guess I got caught up in all of the excitement, because I heard the bus rolling by outside, so I raced out to the stop in the rain. You can predict how that turned out. My shoes stayed dry, but my whole left side wasn’t.

Kin Kwan

LA Gear Lights

I remember getting these when I was in 4th grade. It wasn’t so much about wanting to be cool, but I just had a fascination with electricity and light. I remember I would find all the flashlights we had in the house and disassemble them to see how they work. My parents would get upset since I broke all of them (I didn’t know how to put them back together), so they started hiding them from me. Eventually, I started making my own flashlights with AA batteries, paperclips, a lightbulb, and a Pringles™ tube for the housing. After a while, they let me play with the flashlights again since I was taking all the lightbulbs around the house.

George Kiel

Reebok Kamikaze II White/Black-Green

This was my first-day-of-school outfit for the 4th or 5th grade (no matching whatsoever). The Hakeem Olajuwon jersey and Reebok Kamikaze II combo is unacceptable nowadays – and so is the oversized tee under the jersey – but it was a mixture of my favorite player and the flashiest shoes I owned at the time. I thought that I was that guy.

Sid Ashford

Air Jordan XVII Low White/University Blue

In my grade school days, Jordans made up about 80% of my sneaker collection. Since the new Jordan releases rarely coincided with the start of the academic year, I would cop the best release of the summer and place them on ice until the first day of school. The most memorable pair that comes to mind is the Air Jordan XVII Low in the White/Carolina Blue colorway. Having the original White/College Blue 17s, I eagerly wondered which design was up next. Needless to say, it was love at first sight. My mom immediately took me to Dillards to pick out a powder blue Polo that would match these and stay within the guidelines of my school’s dress code. Yep, I was the man that day.
