T-Raww.

Snkrs Day: Discuss your relationship with Reebok, and why you chose to go with them.

Tyga: Reebok has been a brand ever since I was younger, and I was a big fan of AI (Allen Iverson). So, with me seeing the chemistry they had with Shaq, AI and Swizz got involved, it just made sense. It’s the culture – they really supported the culture. They let me design the T-Raww how I wanted to, and that’s why I really appreciate them.

Swizz Beatz performing in the Reebok Shaq Attaq “Phoenix Suns”
Snkrs Day: What do you feel you’ve brought to the Reebok Classics brand?

Tyga: Youthfulness. For me, my peers, my fans, high school, college kids – I got [the brand] more in tune. [Reebok] has a lot of classic shoes that they did with players that many of us might not be up on. So, it’s good to have somebody new, that’s a trendsetter, to showcase that.

Snkrs Day: What are some things you’ve learned about the design process?

Tyga: Sometimes, when you get the samples back, everything is not always right, how you saw it when you first put it on paper. When you actually get it in your hand, there’s always a difference. It’s crazy because some of the samples, the colors that I did, they came out actually better than the artwork. So, when I really held them, I was like ‘this [expletive] is dope.’

Tyga in the Reebok T-Raww “Sport Blue”
Snkrs Day: How much input did you have on designing the T-Raww?

Tyga: I flew out to the headquarters in Boston, and I was there the whole day, maybe 12 hours. I sat down with three designers at a big table, and we just went through different textures. I wanted to do crazy stuff, like all-gold boxes, but I was making my price point go higher, and I didn’t want the shoe to go over $100. So, we kept going back to the drawing board.

Snkrs Day: How did you find the balance of staying within a certain price point without limiting your creativity?

Tyga: On some of the materials, it’s about finding what’s close to it, because people don’t really know the difference. Most high-end brands use fake leather because leather is expensive and it’s not as comfortable as the ‘pleather’ that they use.

Snkrs Day: Aside from the design, how else did Reebok integrate you in the development of the T-Raww?

Tyga: Making it dope with the marketing. The marketing has to be right, like with the commercials. I didn’t want it to feel corny, or like I just got paid to advertise Reebok. They’re [Reebok] really growing out now, getting other artists, throwing events like this (Reebok Classics Concert in Las Vegas).

Tyga performing in the Reebok NPC Mid
Snkrs Day: What’s in store for your line with Reebok?

Tyga: For Spring 2014, we’re going to make it a little more high end. We might raise the price $5-10, but I don’t think that’s really going to matter to the buyer. The ones that we did make, after a couple wears, kids skating and moving around, they’re wearing them out. So, we’re making them a little slimmer, sleeker and a little higher. With texture and designs on it, we’re switching the shoe up.

Snkrs Day: They’re bringing Shaq’s and Iverson’s shoes back, but you’re the only person Reebok has right now with their own signature. How do you feel about your shoe being released alongside those classics?

Tyga: It’s dope, man. It’s a good feeling. It really didn’t hit me like that. I just try to keep designing and keep putting more out because people love the shoe. You can throw them on. I felt like, if I would have made one color, it would be like ‘alright.’ It’s crazy because we opened up the girls line too, and they sold out.

Snkrs Day: How do you feel about other artists, your contemporaries, wearing your shoes?

Tyga: I think it’s dope, and it still feels like a high end sneaker. It doesn’t feel like an athletic sneaker. Other artists are seeing what I’m doing – people come to me and ask, ‘Yo, what’s up with some of the line?’ Ross even asked me for a hook up on some shoes.

French Montana performing in the Reebok T-Raww “Excellent Red”
Snkrs Day: Last but not least: Tupac or Biggie?

Tyga: Tupac. Biggie was a genius as far as being lyrical. Tupac, him as an overall person, this is outside of music.

For Tyga, landing a record deal given the current climate of the music industry was no big deal.
