This week, Vans Vault turns ten years old. The Vault line is one of many Vans sectors that draws from the company’s skate DNA, focusing on fashion but still carrying the Cali coding.

While sub-labels exist in all footwear families, Vans Vault has proven the craftiest cousin of the skate shoe supplier. The Vault line has more than stayed above water since diving in a decade ago, swimming upstream to international boutiques and staying splashy with timely and eclectic collaborators. In celebration of Vans Vault’s anniversary milestone, we highlight different collections and collaborations from each year.

In 2003, Vans Vault officially launched. High end in design and allocation, the early installments saw new seeding at select boutiques and lux materials on old favorites. This “Pony Hair” Old Skool was a preview of the premium personality the line would showcase.

Year two of Vans Vault saw more materials and alterations pop up on classics. Cracked leather and painted leather received placement on the Sk8-Hi as did punk-inspired zippers.

“Got my Vans on but these Marc Jacobs.” Yes, even the mixtape Weezy took note of the Vault collaborations made by the distinguished designer. The man of many labels signed on with VV in 2005, inking a three year deal that saw six seasons. All-over print, tonal takes and simple steeze saw range of wear on all of the classic cuts.

As Vans celebrated 40 years in the biz, the newly coined Vault line participated in the festivities by teaming up with Pendleton. This flannel flavored collection would be the first of many Pendleton pairings.

Straight out of Springfield, the Vans Vault x The Simpson collection saw a who’s who lineup of artists tag up classic skate silos in cartoon colorways.

2008 saw the design debut of Taka Hayashi for Vans Vault. While early work would showcase playful prints, later designs would blur the lines between sneaker and dress shoe, followed up by rustic renditions of timeless skate silos. Taka’s teaming with Vans Vault helped elevate the line while representing the range VV is known for.

Legends of the underground comic scene came together on a series of sneakers for Vans Vault in 2009. Robert Williams, Rick Griffin and R. Crumb did more than doodle, combining intricate artwork with timeless skate models.

Like limited launches? In the spring of 2010, Vans Vault teamed up with the MLB for a special “Opening Day” series. Team-tagged takes saw only 12 pairs produced, allocated to select boutiques in MLB cities.

Back in the ‘bu, Brothers Marshall avoided surf stereotypes with incredibly mature takes on the Slip-On Deconstruct and Spector. Well deserving of their LX tagging, the respective renditions carried creamy colorways, cool accents and premium composition.

Parisian brand Kenzo kicked it with VV on three collections in 2012. Printed installments of the Era, Authentic and Slip-On proved playful and tasteful, carrying a keen balance of color and creativity. They also proved popular, leading to another collaborative launch in 2013.

Donald Duck all over a pair of Sk8-His? That’s really is quacktastic. Those that always wanted to see a blue duck got all that and more on this year’s Disney do-ups. Appealing to guys, gals, kids and adults, each cartoon colorway packed more than enough fun, coming off cool and classic in the sometimes too serious sneaker scene. Originally allocated to Disney theme parks, these re-issued designs from the ’80s were a pleasant surprise that boomed in boutiques.

This week, Vans Vault turns ten years old.
