The 4th of July is when the United States declared its freedom from Great Britain. The 4th of the line is when many signature athletes had their sneakers’ own defining moment. For some, the fourth edition of their signature line was really just the beginning; for others, it was the finale. From Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant, to Scottie Pippen and Grant Hill, the IV has proven to be very important.

While you celebrate Independence Day and our adoption of the Declaration of Independence, remember that the freedom that our country gained is the reason that entrepreneurs had the opportunity to create the brands that give us the sneakers that we love. Take a break from barbecuing and lighting fireworks, and take a look at how the 4th was also a significant number for signature sneakers.

Kobe Bryant: Nike Zoom Kobe IV (2008)

Nike Zoom Kobe IV

The Black Mamba’s fourth sneaker not only set his own signature line ablaze, it changed the entire industry. The Nike Zoom Kobe IV wrote the declaration of independence for basketball shoes, setting them free from conventional thinking. Low tops weren’t just for running shoes anymore. After a sub-par first three models, Kobe’s 4s were exactly what KB’s line needed to catch his shoe’s popularity up with his play.

Kobe Bryant wearing the Nike Zoom Kobe IV “61 points”

Kevin Durant: Nike Zoom KD IV (2011)

Nike Zoom KD IV

Kevin Durant’s short fourth shoe might not have started the convertible basketball shoes trend, but for his own personal line it was a savior. The Nike Zoom KD IV brought the Thunderman’s brand into the limelight. After three sneakers that struggled to get off of shelves, the strapped sniper exploded and instantly popularized sneakers with the KD logo.

Kevin Durant plays summer league in the Nike Zoom KD IV “Nerf”

LeBron James: Nike Zoom LeBron IV (2006)

"Nike

LeBron’s fourth shoe might not have affected the entire industry like Kobe’s, but it set the tone for his own signature line. All three of his first models were composed of mostly leather and strictly for the basketball court. The Nike Zoom LeBron 4 was made up of a foamposite material and really started the signature’s array of colorways. Flywire was a long way away, but the LeBron 4s pioneered the King’s line into new materials.

LeBron James dunks in the Nike Zoom LeBron 4 “All Star Graffiti”

Michael Jordan: Air Jordan 4 (1989)

"Air
Air Jordan 4 “White Cement”

MJ’s fourth of the line simply looked ahead of its time. After the first three Air Jordans were simple constructions of leather, the Air Jordan 4 had a futuristic look for 1989. The straps on the side and the lace grids holding them down were added accessories to the cement style and visible air unit introduced by the Jordan 3s. Not only did the AJ4 propel the Air Jordan brand into the future, it also helped the GOAT set a new career-high average for points at 32.5 a night.

Michael Jordan celebrates “The Shot” in the Air Jordan 4 “Black Cement”

Derrick Rose: adidas D Rose 4 (2013)

When introduced, the adidas D Rose 4 showed promise as a game-changer for the Chicago star’s line, until its endorser went down. Coming off of an extended absence from game action, Derrick Rose donned his fourth signature on opening night 2013 against the Miami Heat and beyond before suffering yet another season-ending knee injury after only 10 games.

Penny Hardaway: Nike Air Penny IV (1998)

Nike Air Penny IV

Although some of you might even be wearing Penny 5s as you read this, the Nike Air Penny IV, for a while, was the last installment of the wildly popular Penny series. Just as July 4th marks the day our country moved away from British rule, the Penny 4 was when Hardaway moved away from his first home in Orlando, and originally marked the end of his signature line. The Penny IV was a hit performance shoe that has received multiple retros, continuing Penny’s popularity.

Penny Hardaway directs traffic in the Nike Air Penny IV

Tracy McGrady: adidas TMAC 4 (2004)

adidas TMAC 4

T-Mac’s fourth signature sneaker from adidas was the first of the line not to have any design that included lines swooping along the sides. The TMAC 1, 2, and 3 all featured a line design, and were all very successful. McGrady’s movement to the Houston Rockets must have inspired the three stripes to try something different, but they might wish that they had continued the trend since the fourth edition was not as popular. Regardless, the adidas TMAC 4 was very innovative with it’s covered lace and heel lock systems.

Tracy McGrady in the adidas TMAC 4

Gary Payton: Nike Air Zoom GP IV (2004)

Nike Air Zoom GP IV

Probably the least notable of Gary Payton’s signature shoe is the Nike Air Zoom GP IV. The Glove’s fourth signature was the final installment of the GP line, setting him free to further add to his impressive array of sneaker moments. The GP IV was a flashy shoe, with reflective material making up a majority of the upper. With continued chatter about a re-release of his original Nike Air Zoom Flight “The Glove”, maybe the boys in Beaverton will retro these gems as well.

Gary Payton drives in the Nike Zoom GP IV

Grant Hill: Fila Grant Hill IV (1997)

Fila Grant Hill IV

The Fila Grant Hill IV might not have Tupac’s blessing, but it was still one of Fila’s best productions. Although lacking the publicity and popularity of the first three models of the line, the GH4 was probably the best performance shoe of his brand. Not to mention, the original grey colorway is dope.

Grant Hill guards Kobe in the Fila Grant Hill IV

Allen Iverson: Reebok Answer IV (2001)

Reebok Answer IV

Arguably Allen Iverson’s most popular shoe of all time, the Reebok Answer IV had AI on top of the world. In 2001, Iverson was the MVP of the league, scoring champion, All-Star game MVP, in the NBA finals, and had his shoes sold out like Jordans. Luckily, Reebok has brought these back out so that we can all commemorate one of the greatest individual seasons of all time (and from someone under 6 foot). The Answer 4 ventured the line into new designs with its zipper and velcro strap, setting the table for many Answer models in the future.

Allen Iverson leaps over Shaq in the Reebok Answer IV “Finals”

Scottie Pippen: Nike Air Pippen IV (1999)

Nike Air Pippen IV

Scottie Pippen’s first shoe while he was in Portland was very quiet. After extremely popular freshman and sophomore models, the Air Pippen 1 and 2, Scottie’s line just couldn’t maintain its momentum. Nonetheless, the Nike Air Pippen IV was a solid performance shoe that simply lacked the appearance to have significant popularity.

Scottie Pippen dunks in the Nike Air Pippen IV

Carmelo Anthony: Jordan Melo M4 (2008)

Air Jordan Melo M4

Carmelo Anthony wanted his fourth signature sneaker to set him free, from ankle injuries. The Air Jordan Melo M4 donned a neoprene-like attached ankle wrap that added to its support. Melo’s Jordan line gained traction with this stylish performance shoe that was given an array of colorways.

Carmelo Anthony plays defense in the Air Jordan Melo M4 “All Star”
