Bulky but beloved, the Air Jordan 8 brought new flair to the already fly signature line. The “Playoffs” colorway graced Michael Jordan’s feet on the way to his third championship, celebrating the style of 1993 in loud fashion. Following our comparison look at the original pair and upcoming retro release, we detail the 2013 Air Jordan 8 Playoffs in this edition of Sneaker Anatomy.

Black durabuck makes for a smooth finish on the Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs”. The majority of the upper wears the material, appearing perforated around the heel and midfoot.

From a technical standpoint, the Air Jordan 8 features an inner bootie sleeve similar to that of the Air Jordan 7. Aesthetically, the “Playoffs” display a vivid graphic lining that provides color pop and nostalgia. You’ll notice too that the retro version sports a black heel tab as opposed to the red one seen on the OGs. Shout out to @andymunoz2205 for pointing that out.

The Air Jordan 8 is well known for its fuzzy tongue. While the “Bugs Bunny” and “Aqua” takes sport an array of colors on their tongues, the “Playoffs” rely on a black base with red Jumpman. The logo has a carpet-like feel, similar to that of a varsity letter.

Criss-crossed straps hit the blacktop in 1992 on the Nike Air Raid. A year later, the Air Jordan 8 adopted similar styling for the hardwood. The Air Jordan 8 remains the only Jordan in the signature series to sport such straps.

Flexible plastic pieces provide support and style to the heel on the Air Jordan 8. Wavy white plastic is stitched onto the medial and lateral portion of the shoe, accented by a black and red brush stroke graphic.

The Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” are capped off in fly and functional fashion, sporting circular traction indentations and the brush stroke graphic. Hard rubber composes the majority of the outsole in a variety of colors, with soft rubber filling out the graphic portion.

To this day, the Air Jordan 8 stands as one of the most unique models in the innovative series. Strap lockdown, fuzzy tongue and brush stroke accents remain exclusive to this model within the signature range. The Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” will release in retro form at select Jordan Brand accounts on June 29th.

Bulky but beloved, the Air Jordan 8 brought new flair to the already fly signature line.
