Windy City soul man B.J. The Chicago Kid has a diverse taste in footwear, but it all derives from the place he calls home. Inspired by city residents, a well-dressed brother, and local icons, B.J.’s sneaker selection showcases classics that span both brands and decades. Check out what B.J.’s rocking these days in this edition of My 5.

B.J. The Chicago Kid: “My dad was the first person I saw with those Jordans. When I’d see him in them, that era alone really made me understand how dope that shoe was. The small details make that shoe incredible. The white colorway of course is an automatic classic, but the black is undeniably dope boy fresh.”

B.J. The Chicago Kid: “I’m a huge Gazelle fan. Very simple, very easy going, but you can have so much fun with them. I love suede sneakers. I think suede sneakers give the color so much more depth, so much more richness and volume. I’m a sucker for it and adidas does it well.”

B.J. The Chicago Kid: “I can’t be mad at my Yeezys. They fit like a glove, they look good on stage, and they look good in pictures. Just an incredible shoe. I missed the Yeezy 1s so I had to get these.”

B.J. The Chicago Kid: “It takes a certain kind of guy to say no to a Jordan and buy a New Balance and still be just as happy or happier. You have to know who you are and I think that says a lot. It doesn’t have to be about price, it’s about understanding the total look. You’ve got to know what to put with the shoes for it to make sense.”

B.J. The Chicago Kid: “I used to work retail before I did music. On Saturdays, the dope boy outfit was a fresh white t-shirt, jersey grey sweats and a pair of white Air Force 1s or Air Max 1s. That was your most comfortable outfit to go shopping on a Saturday in Chicago. Air Force 1s and Air Max 1s, that’s all we knew. The original stuff. It’s crazy, but I like the colorway that came out recently with the purple trim and pink bottom. I took out the grey laces and put in some tennis ball colored laces. You can have more fun with that shoe and really wear it with anything you want.”

Keep up with B.J. The Chicago Kid on Instagram and Twitter.
