Reebok launched the RBK line and saw tremendous success partnering with Jay-Z and G-Unit. ?After those two acts were signed, however, the brand’s hip hop artist winning streak came to a halt. That all changed recently when Swizz Beatz was brought on to help promote and advance the brand, a move proven successful by the popular relaunch of a number of classic Reebok models under his direction.

Earlier, we reported the news that Rick Ross was dropped by Reebok following public outrage over his lyrics in Rocko’s song “U.O.E.N.O.” where he mentions slipping drugs into women’s drinks without their knowledge. Many women’s rights groups voiced outrage over the song and demanded Reebok end their endorsement deal with Rick Ross.

This, however, is not the first run-in with rappers for Reebok. Check the brief history of some of the fiascoes Reebok has had with their hip hop spokesmen.

Pharrell sues Reebok

Pharrell filed a complaint in late 2004 against Reebok for $4 Million, accusing them of breech of contract. ?Reebok and BBC inked a deal to develop, produce, and distribute BBC Ice Cream sneakers and clothing.? According to the lawsuit, the clothing did not meet BBC’s standards and deliveries to vendors went past agreed upon deadlines.? The two sides eventually reconciled and continued to deliver the official hypebeast sneaker in 2005 and 2006.

Part of the “I am what I am” campaign featured a minute long segment of 50 Cent counting from 1-9 with an undertone referencing to the 9 times he was shot. The ad brought on a lot of controversy when the commercial aired in the UK, where handguns are outlawed. Domestically, Bill O’Reilly couldn’t leave the topic alone either.

Lupe Fiasco performs at Puma Event

Reebok went big with the RBK line in 2006 with a new “O.G. Collection.” ?The Boston area based company signed the likes of Lil Wayne, Mike Jones, and Lupe Fiasco as spokesmen for the brand.? Unfortunately for their relationship, Lupe was the headlining act at an event promoting the release of a Puma x Karmaloop sneaker.? Apparently there was an emergency meeting between Lupe and Reebok after the event…it only happened 20 miles from the head office.
