RELATED: Olympic Diaries (1996): Gary Payton Details Creation of the Nike Air Zoom Flight “The Glove” | Commercial Success: Gary Payton Reflects on His Nike Ad Appearance

Gary Payton’s early days in the NBA featured some of lightest models from the Nike Flight camp in team colorways. The Nike Air Maestro series was a favorite for GP, sporting all three iterations during his start with the Sonics.

The Nike Air Hawk Flight served as the first shoe Gary Payton officially endorsed, appearing in catalogs with the sneaker. This model shares pop culture acclaim, as it was one of the many sneakers worn by Ray Allen in He Got Game.

After years of running with the Reignman and flying with the Flight Camp, GP got his first signature shoe in the form of the Nike Air Zoom Flight 98, also known as The Glove. Zipper construction, Monkey Paw support, and Zoom Air cushioning epitomized the lockdown defender on this breakthrough model. Home and away colorways released during the season of launch, with Gary later sporting Miami PEs during his last years with the Heat.

Following up The Glove was no small task. The Nike Zoom GP avoided the sophomore slump, sporting oddity design and marketing that could only come from the Alpha Project. Lockdown was emphasized on the official start of the GP line, sporting buckle closure and a wrap around lace cover. While The Glove released in spinoff colorways in the form of the Son of Glove, the Zoom GP launched in array of makeups in original form.

The Nike Zoom GP II took the line in a sleeker direction, sporting traditional lacing and minimal design. This Alpha Project release laced Gary Payton in home and away colorways during the ’99-’00 season, followed by an “Olympic” makeup for the summer in Sydney.

Zip-up styling returned on the Nike Zoom GP III. Part of the “Morph” series, the shoe featured a removable skin upper and interchangeable inner bootie. This concept coordinated with the Nike Air Zoom Kidd and Nike Air Pippen V, allowing wearers to buy different Morph skins and switch signatures. The Zoom GP III was worn by Payton during the ’00-’01 season and also offered on NIKEiD.

Gary Payton’s signature line concluded with the Nike Air Zoom GP IV. An extended mudguard catered to performance and flash, packing anti-inversion ankle support in chrome fashion. This model also released in upgraded makeups exclusive to Nike Store.

For the 2002-03 season, Gary Payton switched teams but kept the same sneakers. Player exclusive makeups of the Nike Air Zoom Ultraflight were worn by Payton in both Sonics and Bucks themes.

Nike Air Maestro

image via SI Vault
image via Mis Zapas
