From the minute fans caught their first glimpse of the Teyana Taylor x adidas Originals Harlem GLC, they were clamoring for its release. When news hit that the sneaker would release in correlation with an event at the adidas Store in the Galleria Mall during NBA All-Star weekend in Houston, fans instantly started making plans to attend the event and cop a pair. Snkrs Day?had the pleasure of following Teyana throughout the day and during the course of that release event on February 15, 2013. Follow along on an exclusive minute-by-minute recap of the illustrious day, including both images and video footage of the release event, in this installment of A Day in the Life.

2:20 PM 2:27 PM 2:56 PM

Teyana arrives at the radio station
A seven mile drive turns into a 30-minute voyage due to All-Star weekend traffic, and a mix-up in directions. Once everyone is out of the car, they are met by the program director and whisked into an elevator. The door dings, and they arrive at the front desk of the famous Houston affiliate 97.9 The Box, where Teyana is a guest with G-Man and The Chile. Teyana, being the huge basketball fan she is, immediately clutched a nearby ball and cuffed it tightly like a toddler would their favorite blanket throughout the interview. The hosts bring up the “Harlem Shake” craze, which Teyana had no knowledge of. “I’m from Harlem, we been doing the Harlem shake, but I don’t know about this.” Laughs fill the room when Teyana lets a few curse words slip without realizing it was a live show. The short interview is over, she signs a basketball, snaps pictures with the hosts, and then it’s on to the next item on the agenda.

Teyana chops it up with the guys of G-Man and The Chile
A quick trip down the hall took Teyana from one 97.9 to another, as she sat in the Dallas affiliate’s studio with Veda Loca. After loosening things up by mispronouncing “Teyana,” the tone is completely different. The talk runs the gambit from her maturity at age 22, to her music, to hair weaves. It seems more like two old friends talking, rather than a first meeting. Finally, talk turns to people reselling the Harlem GLC where Teyana reiterates her displeasure. “It hurts my heart, because there are kids that wanted them, but are unfortunate. Those sneakers were $140. They’re on eBay for $1,200 already with 100 bids on them. I just can’t condone that. If you divide 140 into 1200, that could have been more people with sneakers.” Veda responds to the genuine disappointment by suggesting her next job be to “save the world.” Teyana replies with a straight face, “My next job is going to be to make sure I have enough sneakers for everybody.” Then she laughs and adds, “but I plan on saving the world, too.”

Teyana Taylor visting Veda Loca at 97.9 The Beat
3:43 PM 3:57 PM

Teyana arrives at the M.A.C – Rice Village
Arriving at the M.A.C. store in Rice Village, Teyana breaks the news that she also had a “Harlem Night” lipstick line with Ka’Oir Cosmetics that dropped today. Still only taking peeks up from her phone, its clear she plans to take over the world of female fashion one element at a time. For now, her eyebrows are a more pressing matter. “I’m just going to get my eyes done first to make sure she knows what she’s doing. Then, we’ll go from there.”

4:07 PM

Teyana having her makeup done at M.A.C. – Rice Village
After ten minutes of perusing the selections, choices are made and Teyana sits in the chair. Phone still in hand, the artist skillfully maneuvers without skipping a beat. Small talk occurs between the two ladies before Teyana realizes her phone has been as busy as she has been, and also like her, was running low on fuel. She asks Davon to retrieve her charger and a McDonald’s meal (10-piece Chicken McNuggets with a McCafe Mango Pineapple smoothie to be exact) as the makeup artist provides finishes touches. She had no idea she was participating in a live audition. 5:08 PM 5:17 There is not a single sound made as Teyana and crew ride the freight elevator up to the back entrance of the adidas Store in the Galleria Mall. Security is heavy due to the insanity of NBA All-Star Weekend, but you can feel the anticipation. The pulsating crowd grows louder as they near the venue. Teyana and Nikki walk arm in arm. Though she is a headlining performer, at this moment, she is nothing more or less than her mother’s baby. Friends, adidas representatives, and rapper, label mate, and “brother,” Pusha T are backstage awaiting her arrival. Like a queen, she immediately darts to the center of the room to dole out last minute instructions. Anxiety is gone. Nerves are steel. Anger has subsided. This was her moment…

6:30 PM

After a short wait in the lobby of the Houston Marriott at the Medical Center, Teyana and her crew, consisting of dancer/best friends Eli and Davon, emerge from their hotel room. Sporting black adidas ClimaCool pants, a red PYREX VISION t-shirt, and a Mitchell and Ness Chicago Bulls snakeskin strapback hat, Teyana’s tiny stature is more than made up for by her immense presence. With the exception of Derrick (aka D), who opts for all-black Gucci sneakers, everyone is rocking the newly released Teyana Taylor x adidas Originals Harlem GLC.

Teyana Taylor speaks on the excitement of the Harlem GLC on the way to the radio station

Once the driver shows up, Teyana and crew all pile into a black Chevrolet Suburban and head to a local radio station for interviews. First order of business, make sure the press release has the precise information in regards to how quickly the shoe sold. “I don’t want nobody messing up my minutes,” she playfully remarks to D. “It was TEN minutes. Not eleven. Not twelve. Not nine, but TEN minutes [laughs].” Her phone rings with a blocked number, which according to her instant frustration, seems to have happened one too many times today as she instructs Davon, who also serves as her personal assistant, to answer. Undeterred, Teyana shows no signs of nervousness or even a touch of anxiety. “I’m super excited. I’m not nervous at all. I just feel bad that everybody didn’t get a chance to get a pair.” She continues, “It’s still not hitting me yet. The good in it is that it sold out, but the bad is that a lot of fans are mad and are taking it out on me. I’m just trying to figure out how to balance it. It’s overwhelming. You have a sold out shoe, but then you have all the criticism those who didn’t get them. That’s out of my control. Instead of being mad that you didn’t get a pair, be happy that a young female is doing it. We selling these out, point blank! It’s almost a lose-lose situation. If my shoe wouldn’t have done well, people still would have been hating. So, I’d rather they hate on a sold out shoe.”For the majority of the ride, Teyana’s eyes are glued to her phone intently scouring every Tweet sent her direction and Instagram comment from fans displaying the full spectrum of emotions. There is no doubt she appreciates her fans and their opinions. She happens to catch glimpse of an image posted of the Harlem GLC being sold on eBay. “You see this?!” She shows the crew the photo with a look of confusion and irritation. “I…I don’t know how to feel. I mean it’s an honor that people are willing to pay that much for my sneakers. However, I just feel like it’s not cool, the resellers and s***. If you buy them, wear them. Don’t buy them to sell them to people for quadruple the price.” Boe Money, Teyana’s stepfather, chimees in with the story of a young man buying two pair at the adidas store then turning around and selling them for $600 a pair. To which Teyana replies, “It’s just crazy.” The driver hits a curb while turning into the tight parking lot of the radio station building, but Teyana’s only reaction is a light-hearted, “Well turn up then!”.

Radio spots are over. Everyone is back in the Suburban, and the realization of the day’s magnitude is starting to creep into minds of all involved. The ride is completely silent. Oddly enough, Teyana remains the coolest of the bunch as she hums flawlessly, and fittingly, along to Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire.” In true TT fashion, she says the only thing on her mind a little over an hour away from showtime is “how long this person is going to take doing my makeup. Honey, I hope it isn’t packed in there. Ain’t nobody got time for that!” The crew gets a kick out the nod to Sweet Brown, and the monotony is broken.

Upon further review, Teyana approves of the job that the M.A.C. artist does on her eyes, and allows her to finish the job. “They are probably going to be mad when I bring in my own makeup,” she says with a laugh before entering the store. Surprisingly, the ladies have no qualms in using Teyana’s personal stash in conjunction with a few new items. Phone in hand, both ladies retreat to a private area to complete the task of making her show ready.

Teyana added personal touches to her makeup

Nobody knows what Teyana wants better than Teyana. Being the perfectionist she is, Teyana reviews the work, gives a few suggestions, and even joins in the blending and perfecting of the makeup job until it is exactly how she wants it. Considering there was a budding superstar in their midst, the store was unexpectedly calm. Finally, two fans walk by, then quickly do a double take before swinging the door open and walking in. They watch in a amazement as Teyana finishes her makeup. After taking a picture with Teyana, the two fans run in unadulterated excitement down the breezeway. One girl cries. The other screams while providing less than adequate consolation for her friend. “Oh my God,” they shriek, “I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. I love her so much!” This was a prelude of what was to ensue later that evening.

Everyone is back in the Suburban. It’s closer to show time, and tension is the highest it has been all day. Every nuance of the show is reviewed before D is instructed to play the CD featuring the songs she is scheduled to perform. However, the CD seems to be skipping. “What? Why is it doing that?” a distraught Teyana asks. Luckily, the crisis is averted. The stereo system was on scan. Preparation continues. One thing after the other goes wrong in Teyana’s mind. The pause between the intro track and the second song is too long. The playlist is out of order. The songs had been switched to Teyana’s liking at the last minute. “Man we don’t have time to tell the DJ what to change or how to change it. Call my mom.” D immediately jumps on the phone to call Nikki, Teyana’s mom. She is already at the venue, and she has the songs on USB. They go over the order. Get it right. Mom saves the day. Angst increases as stop and go traffic impedes progress to the Galleria Mall. Teyana looks at her phone and reads a Tweet from a devastated fan that claimed to had flown from Nigeria for a chance at the performance, only to not be able to get in. She is almost brought to tears hearing the heartbreaking story.”We can’t do that to these kids,” she yells, “I need to track her down myself.” Even running late for the show, her fans are at the top of her mind.6:00 PM

Teyana’s driver contacts the driver of another Suburban carrying Teyana’s friends, family and Nikki. The show outfit consists of adidas branded socks, pants, shirts, jackets, and knee pads. Teyana is as tense as ever as she complains to Nikki about the wrong sized knee pads, and, of all things, a dancer that had been missing all day. Mom, dressed in her adidas Originals Harlem GLC, comes to the rescue again, as she reaches into a bag and pulls out the right-sized knee pads, a shirt that Eli needed under his adidas jacket, and coordinated plans for the missing dancer to arrive by showtime. Nikki is superwoman. Teyana hops back in the Suburban, and switches clothes. Then, she emerges calm as ever, ready for her moment.

Teyana makes last minute adjustments to her outfit prior to entering the venue
