To the delight of OGs and new fans alike, the Air Jordan 1 is returning in the original White/Red-Black colorway. In this installment of Everything You Need to Know, we highlight some of the main historical notes on this storied sneaker.

Release History

The Air Jordan 1 White/Red-Black originally released in 1985, taking both the signature sneaker and basketball shoe concept to new heights. Jordan’s popularity as a player paired up with Nike’s marketing push to create a buzz that still resonates today.

Celebrating MJ’s first retirment and coinciding with the shoe’s ten year anniversary, the Air Jordan 1 was reissued in White/Red-Black back in 1995. Retro basketball sneakers were a foreign concept at the time, and thus not embraced. Pairs hit sale racks for incredibly low prices then, but now fetch top dollar now.

The famous makeup also released during the holiday season of 2003 in patent leather form. This pair sported color blocking inspired by the original release, jewel Wings branding, and a silver Jumpman hang tag. All in all, this pair was fairly popular but not a drop day sellout.

In similar fashion, the canvas clad AJKO returned in the same color blocking in 2010.

Cultural Significance

The Air Jordan 1 White/Red-Black carries as much hoops history as just about any OG AJ. Michael Jordan wore this makeup alongside the “Banned” and “Black Toe” colorways for much of his first year campaign, which saw Rookie of the Year and NBA All-Star Game starter honors.

The most famous moment associated with the White/Red-Black AJ1 by most accounts is Game 2 of the 1986 Playoffs at the Boston Garden. After missing 64 games in the regular season with a broken foot, MJ came back in the postseason and returned to his first signature shoe. In that historic game, Jordan scored a then career high 63 points against Bird and the Celtics, hitting clutch free throws to send the game into overtime and delivering his most impressive performance to date. While the Celtics went on to sweep the Bulls, Jordan’s record still stands as the most points ever scored in a playoff game.
