In last week?s debut of #20Under20, we narrowed down the twenty best signature shoes from 1992 to 2012. Seeing as the past two decades have seen the boom and resurgence of icon-endorsed footwear, some heat didn?t quite crack the top 20. Check out ten signature shoes from the last twenty years that could?ve made our list.

Nike Air Yeezy

Athlete: Kanye West

Sport: None

Year: 2009

Why it could?ve made the list: When you talk about sneakers does his name get brought up? Absolutely. From Jordans to Balenciagas, Kanye?s unofficial endorsement is evident on everything he wears and the effect proved tenfold on his first signature, the Air Yeezy. The anticipation surrounding the wait for this release was reminiscent of the model that topped our last list, further amplified by uber-limited availability and exemplified by weeklong campouts nationwide. His performance in this model also coincided with arguably the peek of his popularity, worn during much of his Graduation/Glow in the Dark Tour/808s run.

Why it didn?t: There?s no doubting Kanye?s influence, but does his signature impact on the culture account for 10% of the last two decades, i.e., two spots? Not quite. The Yeezy 2 edges out the original thanks to a more advanced, less dated design.

Air Jordan 8

Athlete: Michael Jordan

Sport: Basketball

Year: 1993

Why it could?ve made the list: Michael Jordan wrapped up his first three-peat in the Air Jordan 8. The shoe also introduced straps to the AJ line and its cosmic cartoon campaign perhaps paved the way for Space Jam. To this day, MJ?s eighth signature still receives love through retro releases.

Why it didn?t: Compared to the other AJs that made the list, the Air Jordan 8 brought less in regard to innovation. A distinctly 90s look makes it standout in the line, but also makes it blend in with its year-of Nike peers (Air Force High & Mid, Air Raid I & II) more than any other season’s Air Jordan.

adidas The Kobe

Athlete: adidas The Kobe

Sport: Basketball

Year: 2000

Why it could?ve made the list: How many athletes get two distinct signature lines with one brand? Kobe Bryant and adidas made history with The Kobe. The streamlined design was innovative and unique to the market and also beloved by Bryant. Getting called back twice, Kobe rocked the model of his namesake for each of his first three NBA Championships.

Why it didn?t: Any design that breaks the mold is regarded upon polarizing at debut, but the great ones usually win over the masses with time. The Kobe did not. Contrary to the majority of models on our list, these still straddle the love/hate divide.

Reebok Shaqnosis

Athlete: Shaquille O’Neal

Sport: Basketball

Year: 1995

Why it could?ve made the list: Does it get any bigger than Shaq in ?95? Not really. Coming off an NBA Finals appearance, the Diesel was a household name and the Shaqnosis was a sneaker worth paying attention to. The timing of the shoe?s release capitalized off his enormous star power, backed by a budding acting career and two major label rap records.

Why it didn?t: The Shaqnosis was great, but then what? Even the Kamikaze II and the T-Mac III added momentum to long if not strong signature lines, but the same can?t be said for this Shaq sig. These are still a classic– and worthy of a retro– just not top 20.

Nike Shox VC 2

image via mis zapas

Athlete: Vince Carter

Sport: Basketball

Year: 2002

Why it could?ve made the list: Snkrs Day is a community and we read and appreciate all the comments. The Nike Shox VC 2 was championed in the feature feedback and for good reason. Vince Carter?s second signature still stands as the cleanest in his series, pointing to a high point for the high flyer?s line and also the Shox movement.

Why it didn?t: There?s no denying the VC 2?s clean design, but if wasn?t for the cursive tagging would anyone know it?s Vince?s shoe? Lack of identity in colorways and its overall mundane manner keep these from leaping 0nto our list.

Nike Zoom LeBron IV

image via osneaker

Athlete: Nike Zoom LeBron IV

Sport: Basketball

Year: 2006

Why it could?ve made the list: If the Foamposite One is any indication, people will be mad they passed on the LeBron IV in ?06/?07. Wavy design and material of the moment suggest such claims, while creative colorways appear very influential in hindsight.

Why it didn?t: Is the LeBron IV ahead of its time? That?s the problem, we still don?t know! At only six years past release, this sneaker is too new for a retro run and too early to dub underrated. Regardless of future opinion, the LeBron IV was not as impactful upon release as any of the models that made the list.

Nike Air Pippen 1

Athlete: Scottie Pippen

Sport: Basketball

Year: 1997

Why it could?ve made the list: After rocking the best from his brand for the better part of his career, Nike finally laced the Silent Assassin in his own signature. 1997?s Air Pippen was smooth in design and easily identifiable. Championship play and a good ad campaign add to the legacy of this model.

Why it didn?t: Debuting around the ?97 ASG, Pip only rocked this shoe for half a season. Its retro sales also slump in comparison to models from the list that?received?a second run.

Air Jordan XX3

Athlete: Michael Jordan

Sport: Basketball/Business

Year: 2008

Why it could?ve made the list: The Air Jordan XX3 brought excitement and innovation back to the Air Jordan signature series. Intricate design and smooth colorways had AJ lovers copping the current Jordans on release date for the first time in years.

Why it didn?t: Each signature shoe that made our list received important endorsement on court or on stage from their endorser. The Air Jordan XX3 did not.

Converse AS 91

Athlete: Dennis Rodman

Sport: Basketball

Year: 1997

Why it could?ve made the list: By the late 90s, basketball players were the biggest names in sports and rock stars were the boldest icons in entertainment. Dennis Rodman was both. Rodzilla was NBA and MTV at the same time, racking up rings and rebound records in the AS 91.

Why it didn?t: Though the AS 91 serves as Rodman?s most recognizable signature, it probably showcases his personality the least. Semi-signatures from Nike like the Darwin and the Ndestrukt did a better job but weren?t totally his. The Nike Air Worm was never really rocked on court and the Converse AS Rodman lacks the fandom of its peers.

Nike Air Penny 1

Athlete: Penny Hardaway

Sport: Basketball

Year: 1995

Why it could?ve made the list: Of all the debut signatures, the Nike Air Penny may serve as the best preview of what was to follow. Between Penny?s play and the Chris Rock commercials, the shoe was a smash and spawned one of the greatest lines in sneaker history.

Why it didn?t: The mid-90s were a great era for sneakers– perhaps the best. With that said, brand contemporaries like the CB 94, Griffey Max 1, and Anfernee?s own Foamposite One edge the original Penny out of the top 20.
