Ray Allen knows his Jordans.

Yet, you’d probably expect that considering he’s the longest tenured athlete on the Jordan Brand roster. “The brand has grown significantly since when I first joined the team in the late 90s,” said Ray Allen. “A lot of people want to wear Jordan Brand in competition over anything else. The Jumpman logo has transcended basketball, and people wear it in so many different sports.” Since siding with His Airness, Ray has witnessed the creation of 15 in-line Air Jordan signature silhouettes, obtained a countless number of player exclusives and has formulated his own memorable Jordan moments along the way.

As the 2000 installment of our Olympic Diaries series, Ray Allen reflects on debuting the “Olympic” Air Jordan 6 during the 2000 Olympics, the changes he’s seen during his Jordan Brand tenure, his most important pair of Jordans, and one of his untold encounters with Michael Jordan himself.

Air Jordan 6 “Olympic” (2000 version)

Snkrs Day: Let’s jump straight into the 2000 Olympics. Do you remember your initial reaction when you saw and found out that you would be representing your country in the then-new “Olympic” Air Jordan 6?

Ray Allen: I was so excited because it, being a Jordan, was a shoe I never owned. During my childhood, I could never afford Jordans, but being able to play in a pair of Jordans for the Olympics just sparked my memories of watching MJ when I was growing up. The Air Jordan 6 was one of the shoes MJ wore when I closely watched him as a child, so it brought back a bunch of memories, and I was extremely excited to represent for the brand in that shoe.

Ray Allen wearing the Air Jordan 6 “Olympic” during the 2000 Games

Snkrs Day: Besides debuting that shoe, what is your most memorable moment from playing on the 2000 Olympic Basketball team? Let me help you out. Unlike most people, you had an in-game view of Vince Carter’s ferocious dunk on Frederic Weis.

Ray Allen: Well, the dunk was just incredible, and everyone knows that, but for me, it was participating in the Opening Ceremony that year – walking into the stadium in Sydney and actually realizing where you were. It’s like you’re in Sydney but, you’re amongst the entire world of different athletes and a high caliber of people. From a playing standpoint, that was the first time I realized that there was a lot of players that compete at a high level just like I do. Before and after games, we were getting up shots, working out on the treadmill or lifting weights. That was a ‘wow’ moment in which I realized that this is where I belong. I knew I was in the right place because we all shared like minds.

Snkrs Day: That team didn’t feature any MVPs or NBA Champions at the time either. Was there any doubt from outsiders before the Olympics began in regards to the 2000 team bringing back the gold?

Ray Allen: Being in the Olympics as an American professional basketball player was still relatively young, so there wasn’t a lot of doubt. We were a relatively young team, too, but the difference is we had guys on our team that were still in the stage of trying to prove themselves. It’s always a timing thing with the Olympics. When the Dream Team played, I think they solidified their personal careers by winning gold medals. When ’96 came, it was a new crop of young players mixed with veterans. Each year set a different precedent because it was like a passing of the torch from one team to another.

Left to Right: Tim Hardaway, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen

Snkrs Day: Speaking of passing the torch, you joined Jordan Brand around the same time Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls. Did you look at that as sort of a “passing the torch” moment in regards to the brand?

Ray Allen: Oh, most definitely. When he selected me and the other players that initially formed the Jordan Brand team, he tried to find guys that filled his likeness – guys that were highly competitive and professional. He always wanted players to wear his shoe that could play, first and foremost, and embodied what he stood for.

Jordan Brand Team

Snkrs Day: What are the biggest changes you’ve seen from when the Jordan Brand team first started with you, Michael Finley and Eddie Jones, to now with Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade?

Ray Allen: It was a boutique brand at the time, but now it competes with every shoe company and every apparel company out there. It’s grown drastically. A lot of people want to wear Jordan Brand in competition over anything else. The Jumpman logo has transcended basketball, and people wear it in so many different sports. That’s the biggest change. Golf is one of them. Jordan is not really doing golf shoes per say, but Michael having a big play in golf sort of transcends that sport as well.?They’ve made great golfing shoes for me over the years, even in some pretty funky styles and colors. He’s in baseball and football also, and the number of athletes wearing his shoes has grown significantly since when I first joined the roster. I think, right now, I stand as the longest tenured Jordan Brand guy.

Snkrs Day: Which Air Jordan model is most important to you?

Ray Allen: It would have to be the Air Jordan 5 because that is what Michael wore during the times I really watched him growing up. That was when I really studied the way MJ played, and I remember everybody wearing his shoes at that time. He transcended basketball for me, and that’s the shoe I remember him playing in the most.

Michael Jordan wearing the Air Jordan 5

Snkrs Day: What was the first pair of Air Jordans you owned and how many pairs of Jordans do you have now?

Ray Allen: The Air Jordan 13 was the first pair of Jordans I owned. I pretty much have every pair of Air Jordans, and I have so many different colors of every model. I have a lot in my closet that no one has seen, but I’ll keep that under wraps. It’s mostly casual and lifestyle stuff though. I wear some of my Jordans consistently when I get them because they have a short shelf life, but I’ve received quite a bit over the years. I come from a guy who couldn’t afford any to having all of them, and they always keep something interesting on my feet.

Air Jordan 13 “He Got Game”

Snkrs Day: The Air Jordan 13 is somewhat synonymous with your name – or Jesus Shuttlesworth’s, rather. You and everybody on the He Got Game filming set were probably some of the first people to see that shoe outside of the designers. What was your initial reaction to that particular Air Jordan?

Ray Allen: I said to myself, ‘Denzel is the man’ because he had the shoes before they came out. They didn’t release until months after our filming. When he opened up the box and pulled them out, I was like, ‘Man, those shoes are really clean.’ I just thought Denzel was the man with the shoes. He had them before I had them. I don’t think he really wears shoes like that. He basically came to the set as a basketball-playing father with the shoes, and he played the role to a tee.

Denzel Washington receiving his Air Jordan 13s in the He Got Game film

Snkrs Day: What was the defining moment that made you accept the role to be in the movie?

Ray Allen: I said to myself if this role comes out and somebody does this over me, I’ll be pissed off for the rest of my life that I didn’t do it. My story would have been, ‘Hey, I was supposed to do that movie,’ and I didn’t want to tell that story. I wanted to be the one in it, and I wanted people to say, ‘Hey, that’s the guy that played in He Got Game.’ So, I just decided to put the work in and learn the role.

Snkrs Day: The Air Jordan 13 PE you wore when you broke the three-point record is another color of MJ’s 13th signature shoe that people love. Were those a surprise from Jordan Brand, or did you have a say in selecting the color scheme and model?

Ray Allen: They sent me a couple of things, and we just decided, as a team, what I was going to wear for that game. It ended up being those Air Jordan 13s. Like I said earlier, the Air Jordan 13 was an important shoe to me because it was my first pair of Jordans. For that game, I just wanted something that I felt comfortable playing in.

Ray Allen Breaks Three-Point Record in his “Clover Green” Air Jordan 13 PE

Snkrs Day: There is a prominent photo floating around of you warming up in the “Bin 23” Air Jordan 9 on your left foot and your Air Jordan 11 “Championship” PE on the right foot before that same game. We’d like to know what you were thinking when you did that.

Ray Allen: Oh, I remember that. I did that because I was trying to decide which shoe I was going to wear for that game, but I ended up wearing that 13. It was ironic because I had a 9 and an 11 on my feet, which add up to my jersey number 20. The sneakerheads said I was doing that to try and add up to 20, but I was really trying to decide which one would be more comfortable.

Snkrs Day: So, what’s the most comfortable pair of Jordans you’ve worn?

Ray Allen: The Jumpman T.G.I.M. without a doubt – those were the ones that I wore in the 2008 NBA Finals. Those are definitely the most comfortable shoes that I have ever played in.

Ray Allen’s footwear prior to him breaking the three-point record

Snkrs Day: We interviewed your former teammate Nate Robinson earlier this year, and he said you have a ton of player exclusives that no one has ever seen.

Ray Allen: [Laughs] I’ve pretty much worn all of them. I’ve always told the Jordan guys that I didn’t mind them putting different and funky colors on my shoes – different versions of green and throwing yellow on my shoes for special game situations or holidays. I like it all. I approve of the dull colors and the shiny colors they give me. I’ve encouraged them to make different stuff for me, and I wear it all. There’s some PEs that I gave away to some of my buddies when I switched sizes due to ankle problems, but I kept a lot of them for nostalgic purposes.

Ray Allen’s Air Jordan 5 Seattle Supersonics PE

Snkrs Day: You’re about to get a whole new collection of player exclusives now that you’ve made the move to South Beach.

Ray Allen: Yep. It’ll definitely be some different colors. You will definitely see a lot of red on my shoes. Red is pretty standard because Jordan wore black and red in Chicago, but adding the yellow in there will be interesting. D-Wade is a Jordan Brand guy too, so it’ll be interesting to see the different kinds of shoes they put us in.

Snkrs Day: Lastly, give us one of your personal encounters with Michael Jordan that you’ve never told.

Ray Allen: I was guarding MJ at half-court right before we were about to go into halftime. He starts dribbling right at me and Michael Curry, my teammate at the time, yells out, ‘I got him, I got him.’ So, I kind of backed off and slid over to whom Michael Curry was guarding. Right after Curry said, ‘I got him, I got him,’ he followed that up and said, ‘Where’s my help coming from? Where’s my help coming from?’ Then, Michael Jordan responds and says. ‘Help? You just said you got me. You shouldn’t need any help.’ That was something that always tickled me.

Ray Allen defending Michael Jordan
